I had a TV in the United States when I was a kid that had a scart port on it. There were 2 models of TV's here that had them, The RGB wasn't that great on one, The other TV wasn't even wired for RGB. Sony put a few TV's out in the US in the 80s with RGB sockets that look like IDE sockets on them but NONE of these TV's were cheap and thus didn't sell very well. There was a run of Mitsubishi projection televisions that were meant for Japanese distribution that accidentally got sent over here with RGB 21 sockets on them that my dad ended up with. Which had great RGB. So we didn't get totally shafted, But we got shafted enough.

Even game consoles with standard S-video use an encoder chip that sources from RGB. That’s what the Nintendo S-ENC, Sony CXA-whatever, etc chips do. They also encode component, composite, and normalize the RGB output.

Actually that´s the good thing about it so it makes it easy to tap into the let´s say Sony CXA´s and similar to just add an simple rgb output (like on the N64) with some simple THS amp in between.

TekTherapy Exactly. This is often done even when a console has RGB because our RGB and S-video circuits can actually be better than the original. Because the NES didn’t have RGB in the first place, this has a lot more in common with an RGB bypass amp where you replace the original encoder too. Many consoles have such poorly implemented encoder circuitry that you have to do this for decent RGB. Of course, the NESRGB has to replace the entire PPU and replicate its functionality in order to generate RGB since the composite conversion happens inside the same chip that generates the graphics. My understanding is that the old PPU is there just in case you want to disable NESRGB. To clarify, I was responding to Adam’s implication that the S-video was somehow less than other S-video implementations simply because it was sourced from RGB and encoded/converted. It always is for game consoles with S-video. IOW: A game console with S-video from RGB is not an inferior kind of S-video: it’s the only kind.

The cable is a standard min din8 cable. Which is the same pinout as the xrgb mini. I have build a lot of them myself. You can also get a new cable for it from Tim the creator of NESRGB board himself. etim.net.au

I had a Blinking Light Win installed in my HDMI modded NES. Worked fantastic, but I eventually got rid of it. Not because it didn't work, but because I missed the nostalgia of pushing the game down to play it every time.

Basically not doable in that sense, cause the Retrovision Cable(s) use the RGB Output of an RGB capable console (like almost all Sega Consoles and the SNES and so on) and transcodes it´s to component. but the NES doesn´t have any RGB Signal on a stock unit before installing the kit in it. What you can do is transcode the composite signal via an let´s say cable with integrated curcuitry (or cheap scaler) to hdmi but the quality will be poor. You can clean composite up somewhat but in the end it will be just composite.

Watching this video on my iphone ,i can hardly see any difference between composite & rgb but on a big hd tv screen, the difference between compposite & rgb is HUGE, no blurrynesss,no color bleeding, no checkerbord artifacts between solid colors,no noise,no cold colors. Rgb is mind blowing. Regardless of nintendo’s policy’s these day’s their policy’s are BULLSHIT.

I bent my pins back up, which was a pain to do, but now I just slide the cart in with out even having to push down on the tray and it works. Hasn't anybody else ever tried that?

Most of the RetroN5’s emulators were not stolen because there were no non-commercial provisions in their open source licenses. The SNES emulator, on the other hand, is based on SNES9x, which has a non-commercial provision.

People complaining about reliability should just clean their damn pin connectors. Yes the will slowly bend over time but most of the problems are due to dirty connectors. I currently have 4 cleaned NES front loaders and they all work 100% of the time with all my (also cleaned) games. My main NES was cleaned about 1.5 year ago and it still works 100% of the time on the first try.

for the cartridge connection issues, i'm a purist on stuff like that, so i wanted to keep the functionality of pushing down to make it work. I found a method online where you boil the 72-pin connector in 50/50 water and white vinegar for 30 minutes, and that was supposed to straighten the pins and clean them at the same time. To my surprise, IT WORKED (after letting it dry of course). I got it form working 20% of the time to 90% of the time. I then cleaned my cartridges and now it works like new. 100% fixed. of course i'll have to do it again, but its been a year and i still haven't had anymore issues, so it'll probably be a while. Unless you threw away your og 72 pin connecter and bought a cheap new one, then your screwed. those things barely last a month.

*Correction:* RCA included a SCART input (labeled "EIA multiport") on some North American television models from its high-end Dimensia line in the 1980s and 1990s. Unfortunately, no RGB support was present.

We did one of these recently. When I saw the video I thought, 'did I send Adam a NES'? haha. It came out great, but I agree the 72 pin chip is really annoying. We also did a HDMI mod, but since then that particular console sold out and the boards themselves are sold out as well. It is better than the RGB though (much easier). If you get one, send it to us and we can install it for you.

I prefer the RGB mod kit myself when i offer it to my costumers, cause Tim has the rgb kits almost always on stock. The HDMI mod is offcourse i piece of cake to install compared to the RGB mod i agree on that !

You can probably change the connector on the NES to the same one used on the Mega Drive 2 and have an endless supply of RGB cables that way. I used that connector, which is a 9 pin Mini DIN, on my Master System 2 when I RGB modded it and the results are fantastic (the Master System II, although it "only" has an RF port, has native RGB on board that you can access directly, as the french SECAM version has RGB instead of RF, and it's just basically like 5 solder points and that's it... no additional boards needed or anything... very simple mod) And yes, the HDMI mod is a fantastic option, but some people prefer to play these old consoles on CRT TVs or the first generation of LCD TVs that had the same aspect ratio (which is what I use for my old consoles, mainly because of limited space, but still gives an image that reminds you of CRT), or on PVM/BVM monitors... for those options, the RGB mod is still very much valid, especially in Europe where we have SCART on those TVs... in America it might be a bit more of a headache, with no CRTs with RGB connectors on them except the expensive PVM/BVM monitors...

Thank you for posting this. I know NOTHING about scart and RGB or Tim Worthington but I’ve seen these names so many times, I just didn’t care because my NES days were long passed other than I have a modded NES mini for the semi but I wanted to purchase a modded NES because I knew it would be the best way to play on my CRT at home from watching other videos and this video helped a lot. Within the last year I’ve gotten into the homebrew scene and also picked up a bunch of previously unreleased games from other countries with the translations but I haven’t had the chance to play them. Now I’m purchasing a pretty stacked console. I think it’ll be worth the price. Thank you

I prefer SCART to an HDMI-only system, like the AVS. SCART looks wonderful through a Framemeister, but I can also use it to play on my PVM, which I love using.

S-Video ain't too far off from RGB. If your RGB cable broke on that rare occasion, S-Video is a huge step up in the NES at least compared to composite. Obviously some consoles benefit differently but the NES is quite significant!

No mention of the revised NES top loaders or PAL NES toploaders? Some customers complained about the bad video quality of the NES-101, so Nintendo sent units with revised boards as replacements. All the PAL versions have this revised board. The PPU and CPU have been rearranged so that there is no video noise or jail bars. I have yet to run a NES in RGB OR hdmi. I have seen what RGB can do for a console though. On my Genesis I use the HD retrovision Component cables and DAMN! JUST DAMN! The improvement is quite stunning. Eventually I will go RGB of some sort for all my machines the only thing holding me back is a serious case of be broke.

Also for all your systems that use cartridges, don’t leave your games in them. When you are done playing remove the cart. It will spare the connectors in the console from bending over time.

Keep your catridges clean, keep your connector clean, and you'll probably have far less trouble than anyone who doesn't. I have the very occasional failed boot with my NES, some games worse than others, but for the most part it's been reliable. I love the shitty/silly loading mechanism, I'd rather just persevere with any potential trouble it could give me rather than replace it for something boring.

I don't consider the NES to be "unreliable". Even with bad pins, enough jiggling around of the cart and cleaning of the cart, eventually you get it working...90% of the time at least. But there are times when you will not have any other option but to replace the pins which is VERY easy....however, the real unreliable console was the Xbox 360....Wow...they just DIE...and you gotta reflow them, IF you have the knowledge on how to do that and that isn't NEAR as easy as taking a few screws out of an NES and replace a connector...but the NES has lasted for 30+ years now...Xbox 360s were dying out of the box!

Is it possible to mod the NES Top loader for RGB? I have an original model NES, but it's dead, not even a blinking light win could save it now. I do have a top loader though and it works perfectly, but since it only has RF output, it's almost unbearable to play games on. So I'd like to have it modded for RGB or at the very least S-video.

To be fair, I don't own one of the HDMI modded units. I got to see it in action a couple times. But the point I was making was that when I got this, it was already out of date. To be honest, I now use an AVS anyway. And no, mods exist to improve things.

All I know up to know is that I'm loving it with an old pvm and composite! I can only imagine how good it will be with rgb. Analog is so fast compared to emulation crap. All these years I forgot the feeling of the real hardware. Pvm is nice real nice compared to CRT TV just a little small to enjoy from a couch

Bob Possibly. I'm using a Japanese N64 on a PAL CRT. Composite works fine, and the quality is alright. S-Video looks completely fucked up. The colours are all wrong, and there's weird artefacts.

Actually you can mod an N64 to Rgb fairly easy and use Scart Cables than for some nice output.

But i agree with you, i basically just do NES RGB mods and i prefer running all my RGB modded consoles an High END Crt´s or CRT Projectors without any scaling at all. And if needed an OSSC behind it to modify everything to my choosing.

Yes, but the hdmi boards are out of stock. But the RGB ones work as well.
