While tanks have evolved to become lighter over time, they are arguably more powerful now than they have ever been. And the Rheinmetall Lynx is on the leading edge of the transformation.
If it is true that mission success depends on swift adaptation to rapidly changing threats, then the Lynx has already succeeded.
A concept born in 2015, the Lynx modular light tank has branched into several specialized variants, and more are underway. The German firm claims its Infantry Fighting Vehicle is: (QUOTE) “Radically different [...] and uncompromisingly innovative.”
With its modular design, freedom of action, survivability, and adaptability, the vehicle is slowly but surely securing a place among NATO’s favorites. In fact, the model is a top candidate to replace the proficient Bradley Fighting Vehicle in the coming years.
Armed with a mighty Lance 2.0 turret, enhanced vision gadgets, or with ambulance appliances: (QUOTE) “A Lynx is always a Lynx no matter how it is configured.”

They added a turret recently with a 120mm main gun making a Lynx Light Tank. Rheinmetall are really pulling out the stops for their Lynx. The Lynx-120 has pictures out, it looks mean and cool at the same time.

If the US millitary adops the lynx and puts the 50mm bushmaster gun on it I would be a happy camper, the 50mm just has so much more volume for explosives compared to the 25, 30, or 35mm rounds and I would imagine it produces substantially more fragments which along with programmable fuses would make a nasty round, I'm sure the extra range and much more effective APFSDS rounds will be more than a welcome addition to the US arsenal

@@2bidfilmsguy I remember germans doing it first, they planned to do a 50mm autocannon with APFSDS on an IFV (MARDER 2 IFV). But it got canceled since the PUMA was a better choice, but I really hope US do it, since the germans idea got scrapped.

@@brizzled5193 yea I'm pretty excited to see what IFV'S come around in the next few years, infantry fighting vehicle and modern armored personnel carriers are becoming tougher and tougher every year with more advanced composites and ERA along with active protection systems becoming more prevalent as time goes on I think millitarys will be looking for bigger guns on their IFV'S to punch through this tougher armor, also because kinetic energy projectiles arent degraded as heavily by active protection systems and ERA as HEAT warheads, not only that but a larger round will have a greater range, and will have more room for explosive payload or even smart fuses or technology to make the rounds guided

@@brizzled5193 Puma wasn't chosen over the Marder 2. The Marder 2 project was cancelled in 1992 due to the fall of the Soviet Union. Puma started development much later in 2002. The reason the Germans went back to a 30 mm over the 50 mm is stowed kills.

It's amazing how modularity for weapons of war have proven the same for the auto industry. There is a reason why many of one manufacturer's cars are the same length, width and hieght. With their hoods, trunks, door panels, and fenders being the cosmetic differences and the engine, tires and drive train being the mostly unseen differences allowing each manufacturer to take a base unibody for a class of their cars or trucks and produce two cars that though they look and have possibly vast differences in their abilities, they are basically the same car.

Research? It was copied verbatim from the Wikipedia page :”The Lynx family has been designed as a highly protected tracked armoured vehicle to fill a gap identified in the market by Rheinmetall. Lynx was designed as a private venture by Rheinmetall to provide customers with a modern fighting vehicle that will be able to counter emerging near peer threats whilst maintaining the ability to conduct asymmetric or peace-keeping operations.” “According to Rheinmetall, the Lynx family of tracked armoured vehicles is at the forefront of a new trend in IFV design toward armoured vehicles with lower unit and through-life costs and reduced complexity. One of the key principles of the Lynx concept is the integration of proven sub-systems with a high technology readiness level to reduce development time, cost and technical risk.[4]”

Australian defence and government are taking its sweet arse time choosing between Hanwa’s Redback and the Lynx Kf41. There is an amount of interchangeability with the Hanwha Huntsman and Redback as well. The Redback is a proven design that has been continuously updated, the Lynx however is completely untested. At the end of the day both will go pop when hit by any AT weapon.

You know what’s one thing I’m concerned about the Lynx that nobody thinks about? If it’s gonna have some of the less obvious common parts in the US inventory already. It’s gonna have a foreign engine so they better make sure it’s gonna have the same consumables as all the diesel-JP8 engines across the motorpool. You’re gonna be slinging a lot of dirt and debris when you’re whipping it in the field or in a convoy and I can already tell if you chip or shatter the headlight or tail light, you can’t just go steal one from an LMTV when nobody’s looking or steal one from the tanker platoon down the motorpool. I mean even with the new MPF you can still get away with tactically acquiring stuff you need from other vehicles in the motorpool in a pinch.

Sry to burst your bubble, but: "Driven by Rheinmetall PATH The Mission Master family owes its autonomous navigation and driving functions to the Rheinmetall PATH autonomy kit (A-kit). Proven, agnostic, trusted, and highly autonomous, PATH enables military vehicles to operate in unmanned mode, freeing up soldiers for other duties and keeping them out of danger. This A-kit provides a wide range of teleoperation options for Mission Master A-UGVs, including a tablet, smartwatch, soldier system, and single-hand controller." The "autonomy kit" is a module, that can be installed in basically any modern vehicle. This follows german tradition. The first hydrogen powered vehicle in serial production was a sub, the first level 5 self driving car is a ... what used to be a tank once upon a time, now is more like a T-1000🙄 Or in as militaryleak describes it: "German defense company Rheinmetall announced on Friday it had developed a new robotic ground vehicle based on the Wiesel platform. Mature platform meets high tech autonomy advancement: Rheinmetall’s Autonomous Combat Warrior (ACW) Wiesel is driven by a state of the art autonomous kit which is applicable to a variety of both tracked and wheeled vehicle systems such as Boxer, Lynx or HX tactical trucks. The Autonomous Combat Warrior Wiesel can be operated manually, remote-controlled or in full autonomous mode by programming waypoints on a tablet. It can avoid obstacles autonomously and it can also follow a lead vehicle in convoy mode. Next-generation features include detecting soldier behavior and off-road terrain. The ultimate goal is improving soldier safety by keeping operators out of harm’s way. " Since a far right party and overall Nazi mindset is getting a foothold here again, hand up everyone, who still thinks it is a good idea when Germany exceeds it's 2% GDP goal for military spending.

When are they going to add VR vision to the tank driver? Especially when you are on the battlefield and there are mines laying around, at least the videos coming out of Ukraine are showing Russian tank drivers not seeing the mines and running them over with their tanks when they have to look through the view ports on the hatch. I would think a good VR vision system would make it a lot easier to see the mines. Plus if the enemy has lasers, it is harder to permanently blind a driver through VR goggles. Those screens only get so bright. I would think you could do something like stereo high resolution cameras on a raise-able pod that over-samples some to accommodate rapid head movements of the driver and then have fast servos to track driver head movements as close as possible, so together the driver has a smooth, full vision where ever they look. Add in a high refresh rate of say 144 Hz and retinal resolution technology along with a zoom option and an infrared / night vision option along with a tactical overlay by the computer the video goes through and the driver can have super vision on the battlefield. No longer will they want to poke their head out of the tank to see. If you have ever worn something like the Valve Index headset, those can be super comfortable to wear for hours on end and the 144 Hz refresh rate is good enough to not have any sickness whatsoever as long as your body moves with what you are seeing and in the case of driving an actual tank and using this to see outside, your body will be moving with what you see, so all will be good. (In games you often want to teleport from spot to spot instead of walking around because the confusion of senses of you being physically in one place while seeing yourself walk around can make you very nauseated. Then again in outside environments it is not so much of an issue. It is the closed in spaces that really mess you up.)
