Rheinmetall's Genius Idea! New Boxer Vehicle Armed with 4 IRIS-T missiles and a 40mm cannon

This new Boxer anti-aircraft missile systems will be very impressive. It will be armed with four IRIS-T missile launch systems for mobile defence, six fixed antenna radar systems to detect and track air targets, and will also be equipped with a 40mm GMG (grenade-machine-gun) integrated into the turret for self-protection.

An automated laser system to blind attacking drones would be a great idea, chances are future attacks will be multiple cheap drones with an explosive round instead of expensive manned aircraft

See 6:38. It's available. (HEL, High Energy Laser) It is able to blind and burn drones. Even mortar bullets can be destroyed.

Yes they are called missiles, what drones have shown is that there is an open source fror small slow flying loiterable missiles. These will replace drones as the weapons of choice, because drones can be hacked via the radio signal.

The Grenade launcher is probably the TSWA developed for the Puma with a rate of fire of 3 RPM. It can fire 20 different types of ammunition including programmable air burst. Obviously will allow the vehicle to defend itself against infantry with RPG and even lower range ATGM. I suspect that given the radar and optoelectronic sensors the air burst round might be able to engage micro drones and Lancets defensively. The Sky-ranger with its 30mm gun is likely to be better at this.

I think the granat launcher is for defending against ground units. Think this system should be an additional system to the skyranger. One for ultra short ranges 3000-4000m and one for short range 12000+m against helicopters, missiles and airplanes.

German should develop an updated and upgraded version of the Flakpanzer Gepard AA gun which proves effective against drones in Ukraine. Gun is preferred to missile against cheap drones. Withdrawing the Gepard from service is arguably not a wise decision. Why the German keeps upgrading the Leopard MBT for dozens of years but neglecting the Gepard?

Germany did what most if not all other NATO countries did after end of the Cold War. Reducing air defense capabilities. Mobile force protection against air threats was anyhow a weak spot of many NATO members and German forces were relatively well equipped. Nowadays, gun (see SkyRanger)as well as the rocket systems on Boxer chassis shown here are developed. The Boxer is constructed as a highly modular vehicle, capable to home different modules as payload. At the same time truck-based rocket (IRIS T SLS and SLM) and gun systems ( SkyNex) for less mobile and more distant to frontline AA defense have been developed. All this will, together with modernized Patriot and new Arrow 3 systems, create a multi-layered air defense system serving highest standards and covering all threads from Mortar shells, via drones, cruise misses up to long range ballistic missiles.

Well, very nice, if you are dealing with enemy aircraft and/or helis. But overloading / spamming a defense perimeter equipped with these systems (by using cheap drones) will very fast disable it's capapilities.

You could pair it with a skyranger (which is basically a Gepard replacement). That one would make short work of any drones with its canon, sparing you from using the expensive missiles.

The oerlikon skyranger systems are designed for that, a radar-guided cannon, a programmable shrapnel projectile, it tears the drone apart with one shot without a direct hit... but it can also capture and neutralize a plane, helicopter, missile or cruise missile. Also includes missiles, but smaller than the iris-T (and a little cheaper) mistral3. The two systems do not necessarily have the same capabilities, but the skyranger is more effective against drones, while it is more compact and can be mounted on several types of vehicles (although the German and Danish forces ordered it on a boxer basis, and the Hungarians on a KF41 basis).

They still have the gepards, these are for bigger targets as part of a layered air defense. This isn’t Russia where they try and stick everything in one vehicle that does everything poorly to send out alone. You want multiple vehicles, each doing only 1 thing extremely well to work as part of a team.

1) Germany retired Gepards from service 15 years ago and 2) why do you think systems with both guns and missiles can't perform both tasks well? The US has a system for short range air defense that has a 30 mm canon a 7.62 machingun, and both stinger and hellfire missiles. Are you suggesting that the SHORAD system can't use all its weapons effectively? Or are you suggesting that Germany doesn't have the knowhow to create such a system?

Well, against drones, IRIS-T is an overkill. They cost way more than even Javelin launch. IRIS-T missile is about 380 thousand Euros a pop. Unless of course the target they protect is of the highest importance and drone is suspected to carry a serious payload. But still, this expensive system doesn't replace Gepards, which are extremely cheap to fire in comparison. And with new programmable munitions and new optics and faster and more accurate computer aimbots, they are starting to be both very battlefield-effective and cost effective anti-air defense solutions.

incredible stupid system... the launcher should carry at least 8-12 missiles pr. vehicle to even be considered. And... if they had mounted a 30mm cannon on it + 4/8 IRIS T missiles, it would have been a way more interesting vehicle - that could be able to kill drones, light vehicles and provide airdefense One more thing would also be to enable quick manual reloading of missiles

The Boxer will also carry the most modern and capable artillery system in the world (RCH 155) and it allready carrys one of the best close range anti air systems (skyranger). From a logistic point of view, it is the best system in the world because you only need supply lines for one vehicle in the field.

Pantsir is very bad system because rusians do not have proper technology. Germany had much more practical one. Pantsir is using two radars one for surveillance and other for guiding rockets. rockets can hit targets only if second radar is flashing it with radar waves. So it cannot move turret before rockets hit the target so if you send two missiles from opposite directions one just have to destroy it. Very funny job to be a pantsir crewman
