Yeah, it says that the expensive boutique bridge is garbage… literally disabled/made unusable from a small piece of debris… that’s terrible that replacing the entire system was the easier thing to do than clean/fix it.
@maxpeck41543 жыл бұрын
wasn't the bridge, it was the vibrato. The tolerances are super tight and the arm snaps into place, unlike SOME Fender equivalents that merely push into place, clunk and rattle, etc. Its not "boutique" per se, it's a much better version of the offset vibrato mousetrap. A blast of canned air likely would've remedied the issue, but Novo did the good faith thing and replaced it. And Rhett is right, you are not supposed to remove it. Leave it in when cased. I have one on my JM and it's glorious.

Robert the thing with the Novo, at least the Serus J, is that it is so nice to play right away but then it grows on you even more afterwards. It is a musicians guitar. I would have never thought I would own a "pine" guitar. I have 40ish guitars, none are pine, but I'm now a believer. I have one of the last non distressed ones that Novo was offering. It's an Ice Blue Metallic and I sprung for block inlays and neck binding, I went with Lollar Minis. It is a phenomenal guitar.

Some guitars have that extra 10% and you just have to buy them. I've almost exclusively played the same Les Paul for the past 27 years, but that changed earlier this year when I found the best Strat I've ever played in my life. It also happens to be the best guitar I've ever played too - it has vibe in spades. This is coming from a guy who never got on with Strats my whole life, and now my main guitar is a Strat.
@CorbCorbin3 жыл бұрын
I came across a 98’ Fender Strat, that was a stock American standard from that year, and it just had a feel that was perfect, and I thought it sounded great through any amp I used. A friend owned it, and he ended up giving it to me for what he paid for it, and I’ve played it for over a decade now. It’s what I compare any other guitar I’m playing or thinking about buying. There are mods that most people do with them, but I’ve kept it stock and it’s only needed soldering or work of any kind once. I fix the action or have it setup when it’s time, but it stays in tune really well, and the action is just excellent.
@jeebusyaweirdo37333 жыл бұрын
Before I say what I’m gonna say I mark this situation down as a fluke. I am not a master builder, and it just worked out perfect. The only guitar I’ve found that has that extra 10% for me is the one that I made myself, and I’m glad that it worked out like that. Not a partscaster or any of that, actually handmade it. I’ve made a couple others since, but none have had the wow factor of that first build I did.

I tried to like Strats, but the tone isn't really my thing, but it definitely has its place. Despite that, the only reason I dont own one anyway is the volume pot placement,..The knob is tragically in my way. It is a deal breaker. I've been playing for 39 years and live gigging for the past 26 years and know countless players that have the exact same issue that I have with the Strat.
@Tone2town3 жыл бұрын
One of my best sounding and playing guitars is a early 90s’ Mexican strat made of poplar wood with SD-1 Korean knock offs. I have had musicians play it that have Shurs, etc. They are surprised of the feel of it . It is hard to find that extra 10% from a variety of guitars .

This is such a wonderful video! My Novo Serus J was made at the same time that yours was. Novo even posted a picture of our guitars together way back when. I got mine in a very similar manner. I played it at CME, and I instantly knew I had to have it, but I didn’t have the money. I live 2 hours from Chicago, so I went home very saddened. I just couldn’t get the guitar out of my mind, so the next weekend I drove back to Chicago, traded 4 of my guitars and paid some money on top, but I got it! It was a joyous event, and I adore the guitar to this day. It was originally made for Josh Scott at JHS, but he didn’t like the amber tint coat over the Olympic White, so he sent it back after using it as a demo guitar at NAMM that year. Dennis then sold it to CME, luckily, so now it is one of the best guitars that I have ever played/owned. Mine has three Porter A90 pickups. Novo forever!

Great story and great advice about listening to that inner voice. I'm going through a similar situation. Last year I was going to buy a Godin with P90s when the pandemic hit. I saw one in the local music store here in Montreal. A friend said a band mate of his worked at Godin and I could probably get a deal on the one I wanted. While we were trying to connect to make it happen, I was visiting friends in Quebec City where I stopped by the local music store and on the wall was a PRS 30th anniversary Hollowbody SE. My wife suggested I try it. I played one chord and new it was special. After about ten minutes, I knew it was the one. It immediately became my new number one. I'll be launching my own KZbin channel very soon. I would have already done it but I landed a role in a movie I couldn't pass up so I have to figure out how to juggle it all.

I have a how I found "My #1" guitar story, except it's about my #1 Bass. I happened to see a video of Geddy Lee talking about his new Signature Fender Jazz Bass. I was impressed with how he described how he found his "#1" 1972 Jazz Bass, and how he felt he very accurately duplicated this bass with Fender's expert help. I had to have one, but could not afford it at the time. Fortunately I found a new, "Open Box", returned item, Geddy Lee Jazz Bass that I could barely afford. I bought it, but it arrived in damaged condition. It smelled very, very smokey, like it had somehow survived a house fire. I played it, and it sounded magnificent! I kept it and spent weeks polishing the smokey smell out of this truly unique "fire survivor." I have more money now, and have bought several Jazz Basses, and NOTHING sounds and plays (even unplugged) like that bass. It will forever be my very incredible sounding/playing "#1."

I remember once picking up a Fender Tele in a guitar shop it was nothing special as far as model I believe at the time they were called American Specials and there were 4 identical ones hanging up the one I grabbed had a weird grain spot on the neck. I strummed it and it was twice as loud as any of the other telecasters in the shop even the custom shop ones. Idk it was like it was alive. I came back to buy it 3 weeks later and it was gone and all these years later it still haunts me and I’m still searching for a guitar like it. It’s crazy

Love the story. I have a very similar story for my Custom Shop '63 Telecaster. I was at my local shop playing around with guitars and talking to one of the guys there who is a great resource. I told him I had 2 LP's and a strat but was interested in something new. His response was, "you live in Texas, you have to own a Tele." Well, i had to tell him I had never heard nor played a telecaster I liked. I always found them "ice picky" and too bright. He recommended I play a few, so I decided to humor him. We started with an American Professional, and I just didn't like it. He then took down the Jimmy Page signature Tele, and I couldn't believe how much i hated that guitar. The neck felt awful and the sound just wasn't anything I liked... and it was OVER $2,500! I was basically about to tell him, "I told you so" when he pulled down the ugliest freaking guitar in the shop. It was a super heavy relic, gold sparkle, Custom Shop telecaster. Now, it is important to know I knew NOTHING about the Fender Custom Shop nor relicc'ed guitars at the time. For that reason, I know there was no placebo affect on my ears. I was actually very apprehensive to even try playing it. Well, I plugged that guitar in and played one chord... and had to stop and stare at that guitar. I had never played a guitar that felt so good in my hands nor sounded so good. This guitar was so resonant and articulate. I had never played a guitar that sounded like this one, unplugged. Needless to say, I fell in love with that ugly guitar more than I ever had another one. Unfortunately, it was listed at just over $3,600 and I was in the market to buy my first home... so I left without purchasing it. For the next month, that guitar haunted my dreams. I kept telling myself, "it's probably just because it's a custom shop guitar. They probably all feel and sound like that." So about a month later, I was at a local Guitar Center and asked to play one of the custom shop tele's there. I hated the way it felt and sounded. So much so, I started thinking that perhaps I was imagining how great the one I loved was. So I left GC and went back to my local store. I took down the gold sparkle tele and played it again.... absolutely amazing. I immediately got up and told the guys there I would walk out of the store with that guitar if they could knock 10% off, and we agreed to $3,250 for it. I have never once regretted paying that much money for such an ugly instrument.

It’s absolutely amazing, dude. Have loved it ever since I first saw one of your vids! I love pink. And the sparkle makes it even prettier. My number 1 is my self made shell pink custom tele. Built it 7 years ago, when I first became chronically ill and couldn’t work full time anymore. I decided to build a guitar in the short times I could spend upright, in the room right next to my bedroom. Took me 6 months. Finished in thin nitro, the body is getting pretty reliced now in the spots where my arm touches it. But it started out totally mint. That guitar goes with me to the afterlife if I have a say in it 😅 But hopefully I can get another 50 years of play out of it before then! I love hearing other people’s guitar stories. It’s amazing what people go through to get their true love (guitar, not human, which also can be a cool story though).

I recently pulled the trigger on a new acoustic. The most expensive guitar I've ever bought, and not the kind of guy who can afford boutique anything except the once-a-year pedal, and even then no strymons or the like. I love this guitar. All day at work where I play a true, vintage American horn and professional grade trumpet while teaching, I think about how much time I'll get to play before I have to go to bed or do other adult stuff. It's my oasis at the end of the day. It brings out music I've never written or songs I've never attempted before. It makes my old "standards" feel brand new. I find myself holding it almost horizontally so I can better hear the tones coming out of it. (No, I would never buy a "player port" guitar like that of a certain brand that so many have been reviewing lately. Mine comes from the same company but without the gimmicks.) It's just unreal when or if you get the chance to buy a guitar that "clicks", even if it means cinching the old belt and purse strings. When you love playing guitar, having the chance to invest in something that is clearly more than a piece of gear can really be an investment in your own well-being. As long as you aren't doing it too often...

Thus began my infatuation with P90ed Gibsons, in a new band now, and the ugly purple thing has an uglier gold topped brother... both are getting thrashed on the regular now

Same thing happened to me, the arm seized up in there. Luckily I was good acquaintances with the fellas at Revelator at the time and they also replaced it no questions asked.

Thats a really beautiful guitar, buddy. I am a lifelong P-90 enthusiast and you have really made me want one of these. I think all of that wood mass contributes massively to the sound. Beautifully built. Have been a fan of Dennis' work for a while without having bought anything from him.

For some of us, the Novo prices make these guitars out of reach. How do the Rivoltas compare? I think you have at least one. What do you think?

I don't get how you didn't think it was beautiful on first sight. It's stunning, especially because it doesn't look like everything else. But I know exactly what you mean about some guitars just being "special" in terms of feel and sound. Sadly, I've let two or three of those slip away. For me, feel is the #1 factor in buying a guitar.

If you can't take the tremolo bar off, what do you transport the guitar in? That's biggest gripe I have about my new Strat. It won't fit in the factory case with the bar on.

You have no idea how much money you'll save by purchasing a Novo. You will stop wasting money on Fender, Gibson, etc.

@@JTHeidrick I know I'm weird when it comes to this, but honestly I feel like I have enough guitars 🤷 I have maybe 2 more in me but that's it. I have my MIM fender strat and atm that's good enough for me :D Again, all the power to you with how you want to spend your money though! As a GAS survivor, I get it ;)

@@DasOmen02 Had I known how good these guitars are, I would not have wasted so much money buying and selling guitars of the years. They are pricey, But go check out a custom Fender or Gibson

I have a similar history with an acoustic guitar. Not life-changing as yours but also interesting. I decided to buy a good acoustic guitar for me and set a budget. At the store, within that price range I could only get solid top guitars, but with laminated sides. I wasn't quite happy with what I was hearing. Then, the guy told me: "hey, this is way above your budget, I know, but try this guitar, this is all solid, it's another level of an instrument, fell it". I still remember it. I strummed an E major open chord, and from that moment on I couldn't get another instrument but that one. The bass it had... frequency balance.. the definition... but specially the bass I could feel in my own chest. I left the store without buying it, telling myself I needed to think better, so I wouldn't do anything on impulse. My wife wanted a wedding ring that year, but I decided to buy the guitar, anyway. I went back to the store a month later and took, and man... I'm very glad I did it. It couldn't afford such a professional instrument like this nowadays. It is a Blueridge BG-2500 Jumbo Guitar, clone of Gibson J200, all solid, maple sides and back and Sitka Spruce Top, ebony mustache tailpiece (later changed due to patent issues with Gibson, hehe). It passes months without it getting out of tone. It sounds and a hundred guitars together, it is amazing. The best instrument I have still nowadays. I'm very glad I did.

No offence, but I think it's an emotional attachment or something. It's a guitar with P90s and a shitty trem. If you like it, like it. I wouldn't pay more than $500~$750 for a guitar like that.

I'd watch your videos time to time and sorta wait for this wild looking guitar on thumbnails, crazy because I'm always curious to hear what tones come out of this guitar compared to others. Crazy enough there's a back story to this guitar. It sounds amazing, as if the soul of your voice was in it when you play.

Love this story. Mine involves a G&L Legacy Special that I bought used to be what I thought would be a backup to a regular Legacy (pictured at left, actually). Instead, it took over. I’ve since created 2 more separate loaded pick guards for it - one with Fralin single coils and another set up HSS with Duncan’s. It’s been my #1 guitar for 20 years now. Also: That Serus sounds AMAZING.

I kind of had the same experience grabbing a guitar off-the-wall at a music shop just to try out a new amp and fell in love with it immediately but it was only $250 new🤷♂️

I have a similar story with my Martin Accoustic. Walked into a random guitar shop in a random town on a trip. Now I've played hundreds of gigs with it, written songs on it, earned money etcetc. You never know when it happens :)

I can somehow relate to this, but in a sad way. I used to play in a band. Our bassist ran a small guitar shop and a few times we gathered there to practice. In order not to waste time in traffic jams, I once got there by motorcycle without my own gear and asked if I could borrow a guitar from the store. He handed me a PRS guitar and plugged it into some tube amp I don't even remember the brand. But I instantly became a better player. That guitar was so good to play and suited me very well. Unfortunately the guitar was a bit expensive for me (2200 euros) and I had just bought a Strat from him a few weeks before, so it was not reasonable even considering buying it. Few months later, our beloved bassist killed himself. I'll never get to see him again, and I'll never get to play that guitar again. I wish circumstances would have lead to me buying it. That would have been a joy to have it and a nice memory of our bass player who really was a great guy. Still have the strat though, but although I like how it sounds, it isn't that great to play as it's quite impossible not to have it fret buzzing. Can't fall in love with it the way I expected to. I hope that I'll someday be able to afford a PRS and that it will be as nice as this one was.

Novo is ahead of the game offering stainless frets on nitro relics, play as hard as you want, gig the hell out of it and have your frets remain day #1 perfect 10yrs later. So awesome and im definitely interested in spending the cash for a custom. So sick!
