Three world class musicians, performing to a melody written in 1600, with lyrics by a master wordsmith of our times… what’s not to love?!
@berntlie67992 ай бұрын
Hans Leo Hassler - Mein Gmüth ist mir vervirret ["my mind is confused"?] from Lustgarten Neuer Teutscher Gesäng (Nuremberg, 1601) -- the bridge is by Paul Simon, though. Bach used the melody in multiple works, and the melody is also used in several European hymns. It is always possible that Hans Leo Hassler also borrowed the melody from someone else, I don't know.

Ah, I love to listen to Rhiannon Giddens. I have been searching her out for over 8 years and am so happy for her that she has become famous. Her voice, her soul, her original work it is all so beautiful, original and full of heart and truth!

I can't think of any other song that revised one small lyric, then brilliantly and completely redefined the song's meaning. Paul Simon's genius never sleeps.

Many's the time I've been mistaken And many times confused Yes, and I've often felt forsaken And certainly misused Oh, but I'm alright, I'm alright I'm just weary to my bones Still, you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant So far away from home, so far away from home And I don't know a soul who's not been battered I don't have a friend who feels at ease I don't know a dream that's not been shattered Or driven to its knees But it's alright, it's alright For we lived so well so long Still, when I think of the Road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong I can't help it, I wonder what has gone wrong And I dreamed I was dying I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly And looking back down at me Smiled reassuringly And I dreamed I was flying And high up above my eyes could clearly see The Statue of Liberty Sailing away to sea And I dreamed I was flying We did'nt come here on The Mayflower We came on a ship in a blood red moon We come in the age's most uncertain hours And sing an American tune Oh, and it's alright, it's alright, it's alright You can't be forever blessed Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day And I'm trying to get some rest That's all I'm trying to get some rest

I saw their performance of this tune last fall at Oberlin College, her alma mater. The fall midterms had not yet shown that the American electorate was beginning to reject the duplicitous influence of four years of narcissistic national leadership. The experience of watching Rhiannon perform in what was for her such a formative environment, a song that expresses a formative notion of our country in peril was deeply moving and deeply reassuring. This rendition, created by Turrisi I’m sure, is even more sublime and immediate. At this time of the American holiday of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for an “American Tune”as well as an American treasure.

Very moving. Straight to the heart, yes, I'm all right, and tomorrow is going to be another working day at a job I love and where I make a positive difference in healing the world. Now, I am going to take a walk in the woods with my dogs, the rain has stopped, the sky cloudy but clearing, this performance echoing in my mind, the road well travelled. Thank you Rhiannon, Francesco, and Martin, you make a difference that helps and brings hope.

I love this Simon song. I mean LOVE. IT. But when someone covers something I want them to try to bring something new. They do exactly that here. And they succeed. This is superb.

She just performed this recently with Paul Simon on stage again in December at a tribute to Paul Simon concert that is here on KZbin. Also, they performed it together in March at the folk festival in New England (can’t think of the name, but also is on KZbin. I’ll go find it. I strongly recommend watching the Tribute!

I'm not American and not white,but I don't think the revised lines work.The song is about ,I think,the American dream,about the land of opportunity and how that spirit has been lost(of course from the viewpoint of a White American, but still a vision meant for all Americans).One understand that a Native American and African American would have a different perspective,but this is how Paul saw it at that moment in his life.Still...my favourite Paul Simon song.
