Many years ago, my father took my sister and I to Yosemite valley for a camping trip. We must have been 12 years old at the time. I remember looking out of the car window, gazing at the majestic mountains and water falls, the sweeping green meadows and the big blue sky. This song came on the radio and I soaked in the moment - it seemed the perfect soundtrack to the magical experience. Mentioning it to my dad, he instead turned off the radio and asked that we listen to the sound of the flowing water and wind, much to my chagrin. Years later, after putting up a tough yet graceful fight, he died of cancer . He told me at the time that he was not afraid of death, but of dying - because he didn't want to leave us with a bad memory of him suffering through the process. Instead, I saw him at his best, and witnessed just how strong, graceful and loving a person could be in the toughest of times. This song brings back such great memories of my father, and because he turned off the radio while this song played, it made the memory stick in my mind for some odd reason. And when the part of the song says, "Just a dream and the wind to carry me, soon I will be free," it really hits home. I'd like to think my father is out there, gliding effortlessly amongst those same beautiful mountains, waterfalls and meadows, and enjoying the moment with a smile on his face. I love you dad, and miss you every day.

My dad passed away this past week, this was his favorite song, all though it is very hard to listen to, today I needed something to remind me of him. his favorite quote from this song that indeed in the end came true was: “soon I will be free” my dad suffered from a very rare heart disease and had 5 open heart surgery’s, his first being when he was 13, he was always in the hospital and suffered from to much pain. He is now happy and at peace in his for ever home, heaven. I loved him very much and am happy to say his favorite quote and his wish are now true he is free.

LYRICS (YEAR 1980): Well, it's not far down to paradise At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me It's not far to never never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy Of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me Soon I will be free Fantasy It gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie Every word is a symphony Won't you believe me? Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Well, it's not far back to sanity At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, really, believe me Sailing Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free

Such good music. Timeless and priceless. As a trucker who drove for 28 years, I have cherished those songs so much. All alone on the highways and sometimes the rain and my windshield wipers and the sound of the tires and the engine combine with such good music is all that keeps me awake. As a foreigner in America, I couldn't help but remember my youth in St. Lucia when we used to go to parties and these songs would play. Life was so simple back then. Now times have changed and it makes me cherish these songs even more. The friends of mine who were at the parties all went to different parts of the world and started families and businesses of their own. I wonder, just wonder, what do they think of when they hear songs like these.

I'm American born and raised and grew up with great songs like this and the way it affects you is no different. It's what makes great music so special, timeless and universal. Unfortunately, the music industry has gone off the deep end in the last few decades, promoting total non-musical, meaningless garbage, in particular (C)rap.

I'm on the Autism spectrum too. I never felt part of the "normal world" never fit in, never really felt connected to anyone 100%. People who are on the Spectrum live in our own worlds and it's pretty difficult to let outsiders in our heads and hearts. I consider myself half genius and half a fool. We just don't process social norms like most people do. Embrace your uniqueness. Yes, we feel alone, weird and very very awkward in most situations. But long ago I decided my "weirdness" was a gift and once you embrace that idea...you my friend..."will be free" . Don't kill yourself...sell your unique..weird, and awkward beauty to the world. You got one life baby...live it and enjoy the ride cuz it ends too fast.

After graduation, a college good buddy and I took a road trip from California to Colorado in his drop-top Mustang. Not having lots of money, we mostly camped and ate at diners. But what a great trip it was to have wind in our faces and Sailing playing on the radio! We were free as the wind with not a worry in the world. Then came graduate schools and careers and we lost touch. Since then, I have taken many domestic and international trips, stayed at luxury hotels and cruised on 6 star ships. Yet I still consider that road trip as the best trip of my life.

In 1980 when this came out it was one of those songs that my mom and I listened to over and over. It defined that time for us (it was right after a car accident that put the two of us in the hospital for months and took the lives of two of my parents' long-time friends) and we always reminisced over that time when we lived to tell the tale. Fast forward to September 15, 1987, my mom died from cancer when she was a couple months shy of turning 36, and I was 15. I still play this every anniversary of her death and cry my eyes out for hours as I play every song that reminds me of her and look at old pictures of her. Today is the 35 year anniversary of that day, but it feels like yesterday. I am so grateful that this song is such a special part of my (our) life and my soul. When I listen to it, it makes me feel like she's still here with me, like I can just reach out and touch her. I would give anything to see her once more. But at least I have this song. And my heart goes out to all of those who have shared their heartfelt stories on here. I can truly relate.

Omg! Your story touches me so much! I'm 55 and every time I had to list my favorite song as a kid, this was always my song. It's a beautiful song but it also has a bit of melancholy as it describes escaping into a better place. I was abused growing up and so the idea of escaping was very appealing. I'm sorry for your car accident and losing your mother especially at such a tender age. I'm lucky that I was able to have my mother until I was 44. She was only 62 because she had me when she was only 17. We had a somewhat tumultuous relationship but no matter. When she died, a part of me died. I never understood how connected we truly were. Thank you again for sharing your remarkable story ❤️

This song is a memory of a better time. Before all of the current b.s. I weep for this generation. They have no concept of the soul and the music that touches it in a positive way like this song, and the times that this song came out. The 80's were a blessed time looking back. I wish we could go back to those times, but at the same time looking forward to Jesus' return.

This song takes me back to my childhood during the 80's. A time when life was much simpler and people talked to each other, face to face, for hours. If you needed answers, you rode your bike to the library and hung out with Dewey Decimal. The entire summer was spent at the public pool where the air was full of chlorine, kids were taking turns seeing how far they could swim underwater on one breath, and for snacks we had Mello Yello and Chick-o-Sticks. Riding my bike all over town because everyone knew everyone and we looked out for each other and didn't have to worry about getting snatched up or shot at. If you got in trouble, your bike was never fast enough to beat the phone call home to your parents and you were held accountable for your actions. No cellphones, no computers, no video games (unless your parents had money). We weren't allowed to sit in the house on a sunny day and we never ate a meal at home that wasn't at the table. My God, how I miss those years. I wish I would have realized how special they were.

What a wonderful life it was. Can’t seem to find that level of happiness now in my 50s. Life can be so hard and so complicated these days. And you’re right, we don’t really connect with people anymore. This song does take me back to those happier times.

Was in the Navy in the second half of the 70's and remember sailing the world's oceans especially during the summer months. Remember sailing through the Greek islands on a Sunday where we only had to stand our watches and ships work would be back again Monday morning. Made the best of those relaxing times watching the bluest seas you ever saw and majestic mountains rising out of the sea. Reminded me of Forest Gump running across this beautiful country. Sitting on deck with my shipmates realizing how lucky we were to experience this tranquil beauty being at peace but knowing at any moment we might have to sail into harms way. Years later with the internet available I found all my shipmates and have a reunion every other year to remember those times with the closest brothers you would ever have. Every year there are fewer of us but our bond will remain as we pass. RIP my brothers calm seas to those of us that remain.

I just discovered this song today. It's giving me a sense of Nostalgia for a time i was never born in. I can't explain it! It feels so calm, a nice lullaby. Like something that i have been missing and longing for. It feels so familiar, yet not. I truly love this song, and it has grown on me so quickly!

The 80's were amazing at distilling nostalgia down into a musical elixir... The soulful singing and simple melodies reminded people in the 80's of older times and it does the same for us, only we long for the time of this music's creation. I was born in '88 but never got to see the 80's but everytime listen to the music, I am taken to dark neon-lit streets... *Cruising in an 80's sportscar with the tunes blastin!!!*

My father suffered from depression all his life. It haunted him constantly and sometimes truly impaired him. Fighting it took a big toll on his physical, mental and spiritual health. But despite it he tried very hard to be the best parent possible. Thanks to his efforts my family was lucky enough to live for three years in San Diego, California. Those three years were the happiest I've seen him. Life gave him a break. He enjoyed sailing around the bay, with me as a companion. I was a little kid. He loved this song, always played it on those trips. My father was not perfect, but he was a good man. He passed away two years ago because of cancer. But those memories are one of the best gifts he ever gave me. Whenever I feel down, I pull those memories and my spirit lifts up. I miss you every day, dad.
