I use to think Rhoda was stronger than Mary. But Mary was the independent, strong woman that didn't always need approval from a man. The way Rhoda is constantly worried about Joe and him leaving her is so annoying. She was so fearful and weak.

Rhoda always had self-esteem issues...major weight issue, food obsession and always self-deprecating. She was always comparing herself to Mary, not ever being good enough. She was the opposite of the strong self-assured Mary, Phyllis, and SueAnn. But! She is not a one-note. She is always open, honest and expressive. She encourages communication, talks about things other people try to avoid, and manages to find humor in awkward situations. I find her to be very strong at these moments, not weak.

And yet, people like Rhoda, are the strongest of all, they wear all their weaknesses on the outside, and have a core of iron, where people like Mary have an outside like iron and are weak on the inside. But most of all, Rhoda represents second-generation American Jewish personalities and psychology. She is the Psychotherapy generation, Psychology Today was a popular magazine, everyone was exploring and discussing their feelings, and it was new. Just as was sexual freedom.

I like Rhoda except for when she's stressing and agonizing over Joe & other men. That gets annoying. She's just not good when dealing with men. She gets more insecure than even Brenda! In the episodes after she & Joe separated, it got on my nerves and was almost painful to watch her beg Joe repeatedly to explain to her why they couldn't stay married & try again. She was equally annoying when she & Brenda's boss tried to date a few episodes later. And it was also irritating when she stressed over 1 boyfriend who didn't want to be exclusive; I think it was Judd Hirsch from Taxi. Rhoda is at her best and most entertaining when dealing with her family, friends, & co-workers. In those non-romantic situations, she's the strong, funny, sassy Rhoda we all know and love.
@angelacarleton95755 жыл бұрын
It's funny I feel the same way too. However, the way they wrote about Rhoda always wanting to get married truly annoyed me back in the 70s as if she was so desperate to find anyone that would want her? Why do women that are so pretty as she had to feel this way? I never felt that I would be anything without a guy - so what? Doesn't make me unappealing just that I have free will to make a "choice" to work on my career and have something that is important to me. After all, we must find a way to survive in this world and holding on to a man is not the answer. The reason why I say this because my mother was a desperate woman. I learned not to be that way. This attitude is not going to make you safe inside but make you more paranoid.

Interesting these days when there is criticsm of actors playing their type,two out of three of the sterotypical Jewish family arent Jewish and they play neurotic jews with self esteem issues. Whwn you hear Valerie Harper speak she sounds very confident and doesnt have a horrible Bronx accent. Only Brenda is Jewish and she plays a very funny depressed type. Rhoda is a feminist but is obsessed with joe. Later on she is liberated from focusing on men ..

I thought Joe was a di%k in this episode. I get wanting to lock the bathroom. One doesn’t have to always know when you want to go number two, but being picky about your partner putting the laundry away, staying out of certain drawers, and hiding the fact that you needed to see a psychiatrist over what ended up being just two appointments over “Rhoda’s positives”, is just strange.

Joe is a loser...he just doesn't love Rhoda the way she longs to be loved ...there's two main reason why this bothers me (1) its the 1970's the womans movement female were running around burning their bras so Rhoda character should of had more of an independence edge even in love ...and (2) it's her show why assign your self such a weakling part and give a man the superior role as to even be the one to leave you in the marriage

I like this show a little. However, I think it was a mistake for Rhoda to return to NY. She and Brenda should have gone to some other place together, like LA, and maybe opened a business. Having Rhoda marry was a big mistake, especially to such a flat character as Joe, played by bad actor David Groh. The writers erred by not having a good portion of the series take place in a workplace, where there are opportunities for rich characters and funny situations. As executed, Rhoda is just a bundle of Jewish female neurosis.
