@@johngibson2884 let me be clear with you. I supported the liberation struggle because I lived and didn't like the life of being a second class citizen under the brutal racial segrigative system led by Ian smith and his accomplices. The system favored whites and they enjoyed the proceeds of our economy while the blacks toiled as servants of and ate the scrambles under the table of the white master. However when Mugabe took over, I didn't support his policies neither. Although they were meant to benefit the blacks in order to bring them at par with their white counter parts, i did not like the methodology of side lining whites who had both the financial base and technical knowledge of running the main economic sectors of the country. This was made worse with rampant corruption. So my friend I don't hate people but the systems they built to benefit them while others are disproportionately disadvantaged.

Smith was not that weak he did not give up , he was strangled and tapped out. he did not go without a fight. he made a brave stand but all the odds were against his minority government. Out numbered with nowhere to run for help, he tapped out courtesy of the suicidal guerrillas. both parties deserve respect. it was not target practice for the Rhodesian army .The guerrillas also amazed me . two guerrilla men would make a stand against a superior Rhodesian troop which had air support and machine guns .knowing they would die they would still attack just to register a statement of discontent and stir unrest. The human race fails humanity, many brave souls were wasted , black or white we are one. One people one God

I just finished reading Ian Smith's 'Bitter Harvest'. While I understand where he was coming from, I can't help but think if the Internal Settlement with Muzorewa had been put in place earlier, say, 1969 as opposed to 1979 it is possible Zimbabwe-Rhodesia might still exist today. Certainly anyone but Mugabe would have been far more preferable.

Asking whether someone is racist is like asking if hunman beings have two arms, legs, etc. Racism, by virtue of our shared evoutionary past is an integral part of the human charachter. It can only be overcome by education, training and experience and a genuine desire to co-operate and co-exist with ones fellow man.

I don't know what Rhodesians you have asked but the ones I knew who were 2nd or 3rd generation condidered themselves Africans. There were human rights abuses on both sides and many Rhodesians (including the PF) have acknowledged that fact of the war and the Lancaster House Agreement dealt specifically with that issue. That doesn't excuse or justify it but that is what war becomes us when the stakes are high. Accountability is indeed close, for Mugabe and ZANU PF.

White Rhodesians had Sophie's Choice. It made the wrong calculation by declaring independance from Britain. If they had remained British, I think Thatcher & Reagan would have found some way to hang on via Dominion status, temporarily though--just 10 years. Or they could have joined South Africa, be under Afrikaner rule then, although not ideal, Rhodesia would today be part of the new South Africa, which although has much work to do, is in many ways better than the present Mugabe hell.

What I mean is that the founding premise was flawed-that of white minority rule of a black majority in Africa, and was outdated even for that period in history. Also, the Rhodesians were not fighting for one man one vote! That came later, when it was conceded that victory for Ian Smith was unattainable. Now thats not balming Rhodesia entirely for 'the experiment in democracy gone horribly wrong' that is Mugabe and Zanu PF today, but denial of basic democratic rights undoubtedly contributed!

I can sense the pain from the broken Rhodesian dream and to an extent i m compelled feel pity for those yet i also sense the bravery of the guerrillas who fought against racial oppression instituted by the Rhodesian government's policies which made rebellion inherent. It was natural for the minority settler government to resist the popular majority rule since they were a fifth of the population which they took and controlled by the barrel of a gun. Remember Rhodesia was a British project and its colony since 1890 If the efficient minority administrators and war men had only eliminated racist policies and embraced equality maybe Rhodesia would have survived.

Then if you look at a slit of history...U will be wrong. African civil wars are coming to a grinding end....and this even with less than hundred years before those multitude of tribes with different languages were brought together... Progress
