It's a shame - the History Channel is inundated with generic shows about WW2, while documentaries about the fierce bush wars in southern Africa are very hard to come by.

DIJV79 ,, the foreigners were mostly South African , British and UK , Canadian , American , Australian , New Zealand , english speaking from the British commonwealth..The ones who had been in the military of the commonwealth countries could fit in fast as the weapons , drill , basic command structure were the same as the Rhodesian army and all based on the British army ..

The nation of Rhodesia was founded in 1890, self-governing from 1923 and following the unilateral declaration of independence from Britain in 1965, endured a protracted civil war until international pressure in the late 1970s resulted in its demise and the birth of the country now called Zimbabwe in 1980.

Thank you for the vid been interested in Rhodesia since reading chris cocks fireforce. The RLI and RAR acheved great success when ever they encountered the terrs. The AK 47 is only accurate out to about 300meters. were Rhodesian forces able to take advantage of the longer range of the FAL. or did visibility in the countryside make the fighting more CQB? I have always belived in aimed fire over spraying area. were the FALs semi auto only?

Lots of fighting right up to (and after for the new Zimbabwean Army) the announcement of the election results Mar.04, 1980. RLI was disbanded in 1980 after independance (see theRLI Association website) - most soldiers de-mobbed and went back to civy life; some went to SADF; many stayed in the new Zimbabwean Army and did their best to adjust to the new Mugabe reality/regime. It actually went well for the first 2 years after 1980 but then began to disintigrate for various reasons.

Me grandad fought with the 8Th army in tobruk. The aussies & kiwi's got the kudos for that battle. No such thing as the south african army, or the rhodesian army & air force played a part in that battle. It's recorded as a british army win. They still remeber gallopoli, but what about the south africans, black & white, who never came home from tobruk. The brits needed the commenwealth armies: indians, pakistanis, kiwis, samoans, fijians, aussies, kenyans, zambians, south africans, rhodesians.

Sadly i think that even if mugabe goes the genrals will appoint another person that is just as bad! especially now with US$125 million a month coming in from the diamond mines! im a pilot and the rumour is that the LARGEST runway in africa is constructed right next to the diamond mine .... allowing weapons to be shiped straight in by air T.I.A.

Did any Rhodesian army soldiers commit any atrocities in the war ? An RLI soldier told me he watched as some soldiers shot a baby in the head during an interrogation of some black civilians .. He was upset by how the war was being fought ...

You're right there. Mugabe had the chance to continue democracy but he chose dictatorship instead. I'm still holding hope though that he'll lose power this time, only his cronies who are profiting from his regime are supporting him.

"The smoke that thunders," - yes gary11181 is right. That is the Shona name for the falls if my memory is correct. Whether you call it "Victoria Falls" or "Mosiatunya" doesn't really matter to me - its sort of like arguing whether you want to rename Niagara Falls into one of the many North American Indian dialects. Either way, they are still impressive and beautiful. Too bad Mugabe and ZANU PF ruined the southern view!

@numkie I remember reading about it as a kid through SOF magazine. Great articles. The Rhodesian Military kicked the terrs' butts at every opportunity. But they were unable or disinclined to protect the black civilian population in the villages from from being brutalized at will by the terrorists. And that was how Mugabe won the 1980 election--by promising the people that the terror would never end until he got what he wanted. Until WE can learn to do that, we won't win in Afghanistan.

@Amasonga Independence for Zim was all the greater because if it hadn't been for the whites the very concept of black nationalism could not have emerged. BTW, don't forget that Mugabe is a Shona, and as such, before the whites arrived a member of a tribe who were the subject people of the Matabele.

Zim fell because SA was persuing a limited appeasement of the Southern African buffer states, buying them time... and they sold Zim out. Fact. The SA force who fought in Angola plus the zim guys could have wiped Mugabe and co off the table... BUT... BUT... there would soon have been another Mugabe... and that is what the leaders realised in SA... they knew the end was coming and saved SA for another 10 years... they knew it

Yes, Mugabe was great for Africa, I'll say it over and over again! However his land distribution policy should have been gradual, not by forcing the farmers or Rhodesians overnight, this created an a catastrophe in the economy. The other thing is, he neglected his opposition parties. I believe that all Africans should work together in unity, and not being greedy like that bunch of colonial devils! This is why many African nations are struggling, leaders are nothing but puppets of ex-colonial.

DIJ79 Wrong - again! Rhodesian Army was 90% African (Shona & Matebele), remainder mixed race and European. There were a small number of foreigners who served in Army after immigrating to Zimbabwe/Rhodesia. They were treated the same (pay-benefits) as any other Zimbabwean/Rhodesian in the Army. Re: French Canadians - hardly any; West Germans - a handful & a number of ex FF Legion. All men are dangerous - where do you get your info on the Rhodesian Army?

DIJV9 - wrong, going rate of pay for a first year trooper in 1979 was $2,904 per year = $242.00 a month. That is from my letter of attestment into the Army in Jan/79. Then you paid board and lodging back to the Army! Some Rhodesians were racist by North American standards but they were far more egalitarian bunch (by African standards) than given credit for. By 1978 they were evolving into a multi-racial society with majority rule - it just wasn't good enough for Mugabe and the PF.

The Rhodesians were nothing but a bunch of oppressors. They weren't smart enough as white South Africans who at least later made a reconciliation with the great De Klerk! Mugabe did well to fight you as a human being he had the right to defend the land of his ancestors against evil settlers. Yes, today Mugabe made a mistake about the land policy which is going to cost him a lot. He needed to plan this land policy. However the independance of Zimbabwe in 1980 was a great thing for Africa!
