Most likely they obtained the confession from the hitmen when evidence of ballistics was connected to the hitmen about who hired them and ex wife eventually confessed under pressure. In hitmen cases often times, getting caught as the accomplice is a lot easier because more than one suspect has the info and eventually snitch to negotiate lesser sentence
