Shit on Ryan Johnson all you want, but J.J. Abrams was the real reason why the sequel trilogy imploded by not setting up an outline for the trilogy despite leaving hints at potential plot points, have nothing planned, exactly what happened in Lost which he also contributed to. Ryan Johnson also left JJ with not much to do towards the end of the trilogy in terms of what JJ wanted to do but that’s reciprocity bb

***** Well since it is copying a different kind of sword other than a katana the fighting would have to be different. Different swords require different styles of combat to be effective. I personally think that Rich is over thinking the new saber, they just did it to look different.

I'm not really a super, super hardcore Star Wars fan (Outside of the Plinkett reviews), but I think I have a vague understanding of what the root of the lightsaber controversy is: The new design was included in the film for the sole purpose of looking cool, but the hilt/inverted-cross thing just isn't that interesting. I have to assume it takes most people a few minutes to figure out what it's even supposed to be (And, to be honest, we still don't even know what it is FOR SURE). 15 years ago, audiences already got to see a cool and unique redesign of the classic weapon in the form of Darth Maul's Bo-staff saber (Perhaps one of the few redeeming things about the prequels as a whole). That alone was enough for most people, and now their interest in seeing new lightsaber designs is pretty much exhausted. I mean, what more can you really do with it? Give it four blades? I bet that shit's already happened in the Expanded Universe... Yep, Google-search confirmed. Fuck, they even have knightstick-style hilts. Scale back the lightsaber's screen time (Like Plinkett once suggested) and leave the majority of the design variations in comic books and video games, if they have to exist at all. The lightsaber is an iconic fictional weapon; having a billion-and-a-half allegedly "badass" upgrades knocks it down a peg, and makes it seem commonplace in a universe where it's supposedly only wielded by a select few elite warriors. I think most people would rather see creativity put into designing some entirely new weapons (And, you know... The story) rather than different variations of something they're already familiar with. Hell, I still want to know what Zuckuss' tommy-gun thing does.
@StasConstantine9 жыл бұрын
I think the new saber should have been perhaps similar to Darth Maul's, but it could be detached making two different sabers and use them for dual wielding.
@ThePinkMan9 жыл бұрын
That would've been Ok.
@StasConstantine9 жыл бұрын
The practicality affects the story. If it's shitty practicality-wise, then it effect story negatively by posing questions such as "are these wise jedi or sith guys really that stupid?" "wouldn't something else happen if the light saber was different?" causing bumps in the story, making the story shitty, making the movie dumb. Or parts of them fighting jedi isn't uncreative, it's a nice homage to the romantic ideas of the past. the noble knights, protectors of good,fighting against the evil..
@ThePinkMan9 жыл бұрын
***** Another idea: If we only had the original trilogy to go by, it would seem that certain people who've mastered the Force to a very high level (Yoda, the Emperor) would have no use for a lightsaber. The Emperor was basically just an evil sorcerer at the end of Return of the Jedi. How about a big wizard battle between two characters like that, without any lightsabers? I remember that Yoda and Christopher Lee threw rocks at each other in Attack of the Clones, but I bet they could pull off something more imaginative.
@mariazo9 жыл бұрын
It's just a cheap gimmick for fanboys to cream their pants over. Darth Maul's stick was pretty creative, and as you said, it's pretty much as far as you can stretch the lightsaber concept. Any more additions just seem forced and gimmicky.

I dislike this for the sole reason that he's destroying all those cool collectibles in the background. Isn't he aware that people pay good money for these & work at keeping them in mint condition? Can't believe he ripped open that box like that...

I don't know if I should say anything because I don't want to ruin the video, but I'll just say I was about to click off of this wondering why RLM would make a video like this, which I think played into the punchline a lot. Don't know if that was intentional but if it was I'm impressed.

Nostalgia + Access to an Audience = Wank-festival. I think RLM pretty much summed it all up with this video, unceremonious as it may be.

To be fair The Phantom Menace was banking on a lot of good will generated by the original trilogy. I mean the teaser trailer for the Phantom Menace could have been like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace "We already have your money go watch it bitch!" and everyone still would have been screaming for joy.
