Randy Newman wrote this about the Los Angeles music/party scene in the 1960s. The narrator is a sheltered young man encountering his first wild party complete with marijuana, whiskey, and lots of other things he's never seen before. He's sorry he didn't listen when his mama told him not to come.

The Three Dog Night Story, 1964-1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton's girlfriend, actress June Fairchild (best known as the "Ajax Lady" from the Cheech and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night".

@@laurier8131 In northern Canada too. There are dogs and dogsleds. If you are out at night and it's cold You sleep with the dogs. They keep you from freezing to death.

I think that the reference to sugar probably implies LSD or in common vernacular "acid" that came in the form of a sugar cube. All kinds of things were going on at parties in the 60's and 70's that he would not have seen before. Fun song. Great band and lead singer. Good reaction. Cheers from Canada

I heard the name came from cold regions where folk travel across the snow on dog sleds. On a cold night you slept with a dog up next to you to keep you warm. Back in the day, "whiskey in your water" or "high ball" meant a mix of an amphetamine and an opioid. So, an upper and a downer together. It had other names like "up-down" and "inside-out." Putting sugar in your tea meant to sprinkle some THC crystals in with your weed to give it an extra kick. "Sugar" was also a name for LSD. Not that I know anything about such things....

The bands name came from years back . A chilly night was a one dog night meaning you only needed one dog in bed with you. A colder night was a two dog night. Even colder a three dog night!

Whisky and water is called a High Ball. This was because it used to be that the express trains that were directed on which tracks to take by a ball on a stick would be raised for express trains or lowered for locals. The express trains would scream through the stations without slowing down. The rapid speed at which the bartenders at bars in train stations (they used to be common) could pour a bourbon whiskey and water--a popular call in those days--brought about its name, the High Ball.

The name Three Dog Night is actually an Intuit Indian (Eskimo) term. When it's cold enough to sleep with three dogs, to keep warm, that's a very cold night. And yeah another version is that the Aborigines in Australia used to do that too. But convincing a wild Dingo to sleep with them seems a stretch and alot of fighting. I'm in inclined to believe it was the Eskimos and their domesticated sled dogs.

Three Dog Night did not compose most of their hit songs themselves. They were not song writers. This song was written by Randy Newman, who wrote many hit songs for many artists as well as TV shows and jingles. But, where they lacked in song writing skill, they made up for it as great musicians and vocalists. Their drummer, Floyd Sneed, was a founding member and a rare sight as a black man in a 60’s/70’s era rock band.
