By popular demand.
1. April 27, 1989: Richard's first appearance on Later.
2. Date unknown, taped in L.A.; never aired because Bob was laughing so much.
3. April 5, 1990: Richard's third appearance, with many clips from the unaired L.A. tape.

We really lost a great icon. Bob Costas gave a fabulous interview. Richard Lewis, not only was he funny, he had a dynamic personality 💕. He kept it real 🤣. I was really upset when I heard of his passing. 😢. This was a great 👍 collection. Thanks.

Got here by accident, but I remember seeing this when it aired originally! I really thought Bob Costas was comfortable and engaging on this show! He was a great interviewer already but he really seemed to be enjoying himself every night!

I met Lewis at a Mets game in the mid-90s. I told him I would stay up late if I saw in the TV listings that he would be on "Later with Bob Costas." I'll never forget how his eyes lit up and says, "Wasn't that a fucking great show, man!" He said he loved Letterman for what he did for him and other comedians but that "Later" was his favorite show to appear on.

Hey Don. This is brilliant.Thanks. I don't how many times Richard was on Later, but there was one appearance when he threw off a line that stayed with me for years and would crack me up just thinking about it. He was referencing kids movies or something and he cited "Fievel plays stickball with a moose". I lost it. So amazing the things that stick in memory

Great stuff! I liked his retort when Costas referenced It's a Wonderful Life and who would 'get' it. "Four mental patients and Kafka's ghost". Hilarious, brilliant. These guys had top notch rapport.

Thank you Don for this great Costas and Richard Lewis upload. I remember watching them, and how ticked off Lewis got when NBC wouldn't air the one where he made Costas loose it laughing. Thank God they put it on! Can't wait till you do a Richard Lewis collection on Dave Letterman.

As a fan of British comedy; Monty Python, Peter Sellers, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Ricky Gervais etc, I'm proud that we have/had great comics like Richard Lewis, George Carlin, Woody Allen, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, etc. Humor and laughter are such essential ingredients.

Instead of trying to squeeze in as many people as possible plus a musical performance, "Later" always focused on one guest. Interesting people like Mickey Spillane, Larry Gelbart, and Steve Allen. Terrific show.

Was there one appearance on Letterman where his Mom was there & but he had her escorted out? Or was this another person?

It was the Too Hot to do a Show Show, November 20, 1985. Richard’s mom Blanche had come to the show, and he figured she’d just be in the audience. But when Dave decided to tape the show in his office, Richard said he’d be too uncomfortable with her sitting right there in the same room. So after Dave introduced Blanche in the office reception area, Richard asked her if she’d be ok if she weren’t in the office with him. She understood, and so she didn’t accompany him when Dave and Richard walked into the office to begin the interview. So no, she wasn’t escorted out.
