Richard Marx was a pop rock artist who enjoyed a stellar career from 1987 to 1995. His first album debuted in 1987 and sold 3 million copies in the US, thanks to hits like 'Hold on to the nights'... "Don't mean nothing". His second album 'Repeat offender' in 1989 was an even bigger hit, selling 4 million copies in the US, scoring a #1 hit w/ 'Right here waiting' (a song he had written on tour for his GF Cynthia, who became his first wife)... Other hits included - 'Angelia'... 'Satisfied'... 'Children of the night'. 'Rush street' was his 3rd album in 1991, selling 2 million copies in the US... the single 'Hazard' was a huge hit... 4th album 'Paid vacation' was a platinum (1 million copies sold in US) ... the ballad 'Now & forever' becoming a hit single. Subsequent Richard Marx albums failed to sell commercially, but he has recorded & toured worldwide since.

It was a huuuge hit in 1989, number one everywhere, and teenage girls all over the world swooned. It's one of those songs that was so big that you've probably heard it without knowing it. Richard Marx was a superstar with a string of hits in the late 80s/early 90s. This song was supposedly inspired by him missing his then wife while out on tour. He's mostly known for this kind of power ballad, but he excelled doing more uptempo pop songs as well.

I think its hard to be an adult in the western world and not have heard this song even if just in passing. And then a little in. " This sound very familiar " Its been played in the 80's-90's 2000's and its still being played.. Think it's what is called a classic.

Love the vi add9 (or sus2) chords on this one… Even though the chords are otherwise pretty predictable, the suspensions and alterations (even though very eighties) make the song more interesting! I think it‘s the genius of the melody in combination with the rather easy to remember chord progression, but where the melody causes the „interesting“ notes/suspension/add chords, that make this song so catchy, along with the nice arrangement (piano/acoustic guitar solo) and the raspy voice.

If you want/need something else from roughly the same time frame that will also tug on your heartstrings, I'd recommend "Everything I Do..." by Bryan Adams. Ballads of the 80's...you can't go wrong with just about any of them.

He is a great song writer like his father. He has wrote alot of songs for others and himself. He also has wrote songs for a few Disney Cartoons like all the Songs for Mulan.
