When I had minor surgery a few years ago I was prescribed oxy when I left but I requested a non narcotic painkiller instead. While the nurse was supportive, the doctor refused my request and wrote a script for the opioid. I tore it up and took ibruprophen for the Pain, which was actually pretty tolerable. I don’t understand why the doctor did that, unless he was benefiting somehow from it.

@@WilliamBlakeHall Very good on you that you didn't take them, but please please don't endorse flushing them. That puts opiates in the ground water or in the water treatment facility of your town or city. That can create higher than acceptable levels of opiates in a town's or city's drinking water. Most cities have a plan for disposing of opiates. Call your local government or law enforcement agency to find out about safe disposal options in your area. (This is just a public service announcement, because I don't think you are anywhere near to being the only person who has flushed opioids. That's why it is of real concern and we should get the message out to people not to do it.)

It’s not... I am a pharmacist, we knee these are addictive. Prescribers kept prescribing them, pharmacies kept dispensing them. No one wants to admit fault. Personally, I never dispensed OxyContin it outside of a few cases. Never even stocked it even though the “chain” pharmacy I managed kept on my case. We are all to blame, the drug company, the FDA, and doctors/pharmacists.

People always seem to profit off addiction... and then, of course, they cast all blame on the addicts whose vulnerability they have drawn out and cultivated into a profitable despair farm. Where I live, it's more about online casinos, endless TV-advertised online casinos, but the general pattern is the same. Exploit the vulnerable. We need regulations that stop companies doing this, in any form. In the US, and the rest of the world.

But eventually he took a little more to help with his severe pain. Eventually, he became addicted. Then, in 2009, he died from an overdose. He was only 23 years old, with a wonderful life ahead of him. He had the best Mom and two wonderful twin sisters. It's helps to know, now, who actually killed him. How dare they blame the addicts! A lot of people don't understand that people with chronic, intractable pain rely on opioid medications, such as oxycontin, to manage (and not entirely eliminate) pain and have some quality of life. My mother, who has multiple severely painful conditions, tried every invasive procedure, every experimental treatment, incurred permanent side effects, before finally finding a clinic who would manage her pain appropriately. Hold pharma accountable for unethical sales or marketing practices, of course, but remember these medications provide critical support to those who need them. My mother would not be with me today if she did not have access to this care.

LIMS Stinks And def raise your voice as it is folks like your mom, my sister, countless friends who are now gone - all are or were helped by opioids. And when true, long-lasting, likely lifelong pain is involved, let’s remember, one size does not fit all; we must call and write our representatives to let them know that there ARE folks whose quality of life is at stake if protections are not put in place for those with quality of life issues and certainly end of life situations. THEY are not the problem.

if they want to help, they should donate money toward mental health Nami. #mental health is needed for this country.

they should be sued for all the people they murdered + paying huge compensations + rehab to the people they ruined the life of, and/or their families. All of their fortune should go to that an it wouldn't even be enough to repair anything

I’m currently looking for forward-thinking investors in a promising venture: selling pitch, forks and guillotines. The people are gonna need that stuff very soon

i know family--a husband and two young boys, who lost their wife/mother and a 25 yr. old man who was planning to start college the next month, both of whom had no drug history. dead. gone. their only 'crime?' they were in pain from injuries from car accidents, and addicted to prescribed opioids...

Neon clothes? I'm old enough to remember that being popular in the 80's. Seems Joss has a fantastic career in fashion behind her.

Idk how I feel. Obviously this epidemic is bad but I think we are going to far the other way. My mother has ankylosing spondylitis and being of this epidemic they cut everyones meds, even people with chronic illness like my Mum. Now she cries for hours every day from the pain.

I had foot surgery and the pharmacist decided that I only needed 1/4 of the prescription filled. I was in pain. I’m not an addict but the pharmacist decided that I was. I took the prescription to the pharmacy located in my doctors office bldg instead. No judgement. The problem with the current situation is that people in real verifiable pain are being treated as though we are addicts.

Sam, you have actually kept me afloat through this whole horrible Trump nightmare (and it’s not really him. It’s the whole world of newly emboldened misogyny). You are so under appreciated and so brave. Keep it up. We need you. We hear you. Yes.
