Local historian Richard Schwartz returns to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to captivate you once again with his characteristic blend of serious history, fascinating images, and “telling details” stories. Schwartz shares eyewitness accounts and unique views of Berkeley from more than 120 years ago, which show how profoundly the landscape, culture, economy and social values of modern Berkeley have been shaped by what came before. Berkeley 1900 is his definitive account of a pivotal time in the life of one of America's most beloved cities.

Schwartz is a great story-teller: finds important humanity in forgotten history. The area high schools and colleges should share the works of Schwartz.

Fascinating glimpses into an older Berkeley through old newspaper stories. I appreciate that Richard rescued the papers from being trashed, and recovered these gems.

It is obvious Schwartz is a great historian, giving his knowledge of the Berkeley history. I enjoyed his view on the incredibly brave women, as opposed to the frail perspective. Great speaker!

"Jack the Hugger" plus Berkely Hill irises and folksy statements, including"like a Jack-in-the-box," make this an event unparalleled by only Mark Twain and John Steinbeck. Mr. Scwartz compiles a compendium of culinary complexity like Breyers Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.
