It's a low-key running joke through the whole series that Rick desperately wants people to appreciate his humor, and it makes him ridiculously happy when they do. It goes all the way back to at least Season 1 Episode 10, where Rick is being held captive in the dome of tortured Morty's, and how crushed he was when he found out that the alien guard creature wasn't actually laughing at his jokes. Without going into detail, at one point in a future episode, Rick is even genuinely upset and apologetic to Morty when he realizes that he'd accidentally ignored Morty making a funny reference, presumably because Rick himself hates the feeling of having his humor ignored or fall flat. It's a part of Rick's character that is rarely pushed to the forefront, but keeps cropping up in the background throughout the series.

Also I think it could even go a bit deeper and be that Rick craves positive acknowledgement. There's the time he has sex with Unity and he wants the stadium "full of every man who remotely looks like my father cheering me on" so it could be he wants positive attention whether for his genius or whatever else. He desires praise

These is acutely a little mini series of Vendacators 2 on adult swims youtube channel 10 episodes each 2 or 3 minutes you should react to that next to switch things up a little with RIck and Morty

Now that you’ve seen this episode, there IS a “Vindicators 2” on KZbin. I believe it’s on the Adult Swim channel. It’s a series of short videos that you could probably fit into one reaction video, and it mostly plays on things that have payoffs in this episode (the Ant Affair) by setting them up in the Vindicators 2 story. Technically it released just prior to season 6, but I don’t remember there being anything spoilery, especially since it canonically takes place before this episode, so you could watch them whenever. They’re fun and I’ll definitely give your reaction a watch if you decide to do them, but they aren’t vital to anything either and if you miss them it’s no big deal.

Basically morty's change in realizing the vindicators weren't heroes came too early in the episode, so he's just there along for the ride for 6 minutes. And this realization was forced by rick, not one morty came to on his own. And we don't see morty's change of heart affect the plot really.
