The King of Punk Funk Rick James thanks the R'n'B awards academy by singing a nice Funky song only with his guitar and a drum beat. He won the Best R'n'B album award for his great Throwin' down album in 1983. The Mary Jane Girls accepted the award because Rick was busy, recording and working.

RJ is so underrated it's a CRIME. Imagine just with a guitar and just singing and rocking the place like this. RJ had so much talent and could sing his ass right off. But with all geniuses, they are wired different from the rest of us. Like Edgar Allen Poe who was hooked on Opium. But when he wasn't high, Edgar couldn't put a sentence together. But when he was full of Opium, he wrote classics that will NEVER DIE. I guess that was the case of RJ, he absolutely was a music writing genius. But I guess he had to be high to tap into his inner being. Sometimes it goes like that. RIP RJ..

Most musicians use drugs as inspiration, but they make garbage while they are using it. The Beatles are the same, they wrote songs while they were high, and they scrapped it all the next day.

Rick James had much more talent than what meets the eye. He wrote all of his songs, as well as arranging and producing all of his material. His music was so diverse and was so unique. The individual who got the credit for the diverse mixing of genres was Prince. I love Prince as well, but Rick James definitely influenced him in so many ways. Rick James was literally a genius like Prince and their music was so similar.

When my brother and sister and I were like.. 10, 9, and 7 years old in like 1990 or so, my Uncle Raymond came to stay with us for a while... Idr how long he was with us, I think it was a couple months, and also I didn't know he was with us to get out of his home town because he was trying to kick dope and get away from the old people, places, and things, and Uncle Ray was always _cool_ dude lol he was also part of a gang too and had some violent tendencies, but he was great with us and he _loved_ music; specifically R&B, funk, and soul because (same as my ma and her siblings) that's what they grew up with, and while he was living there with us I remember he was messing with the radio and asked us what we like to listen to and none of us knew anything about music at all and he was stunned lol so he would be like (with every track or artist he showed us) "this is the SHIT right HERE!" And he'd play us stuff like Marvin Gaye, Rick James (his #1 fav) all those great R&B funk/soul type of groups (mostly African people artists) including some rock like Jimi Hendrix as well and we didn't know how to dance either and so he'd play mostly his favorite Rick James and we'd dance in the living room and he'd show us his cool moves n shit and here we were these little kids grooving to Rick James and when we'd ride around with ma we'd be in the back singing "SHE'S A SUPA FREAK! SUPA FREAK! SHE'S SUPA FREAK-AY OW!"😂 We'd have to spend weekends with our ex father and he was a hypocrite christian and said all secular music was satanic and we'd be in the back of his truck and sing Rick James tunes and he'd be like "where'd you learn that?? Forget all that music right now!" Hell naw dude, not happenin' lol eventually Uncle Ray went back home and eventually we moved to his hometown where all my ma's family was and we were reunited again for a few years until he passed away tragically when I was 14 and that really hurt all of us.. and for a while I couldn't listen to that music because it'd make me feel a type of way, but I'm much older now and I love the old music he'd shown us, ESPECIALLY Rick James! because it makes me remember those early days of dancing in the living room, him teaching us how to talk to girls, how to fold and wear a bandana, how to roll a cigarette even 😂 my mom got mad at that one lol but yeah.. I never knew Rick James, but he holds a special place in my soul and memory alongside my Uncle Raymond.
