Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This KZbin channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.

I wouldn't. Seems everybody does that and there is no way they are light years ahead of a lot of the other brands... except in price! Great set up for the review channel launch and we should get to see a lot of testing going on starting with different iron sets. Got to agree with Rick that Cobra is underrated and make exceptional equipment for a great price! Almost went that direction myself but had Cobra's for 20 years... was time to change it up.

Rick, I work as a club fitter and have had the opportunity to test most of the clubs on the market. I think you will be disappointed by the cobra cb. They have a TON of offset for a cb iron, and they feel really firm/clicky. The new srixon zx7 have less offset and still a bit clicky imo. I would recommend looking at the ping i230 with maybe an icrossover or i525 for your driving iron or look at something like a mizuno pro 225 or 223.
@BLKMeSa
@BLKMeSa Жыл бұрын
Agree 100% I played the first-gen ZX7/ZX5 combo, and the i230 feel very muted and soft (close to the ZX7 and way softer than the ZX5). Even after testing the mk.ii ZX irons, the i230s were as forgiving as the ZX5, but felt way better. They are consistent in carry distances, get up in the air easily, and look clean in the bag. Not to mention Ping's custom fitting is second to none. Maybe the only downside is the weak number of included no-upcharge shaft options which do not come close to Mizuno's.

I understand the reasoning of 14 degrees of bounce in English winter, but not for the Scottish summer links courses. You should get a set of each, depending of where you are playing. No surprise of skinning a 14 degrees bounce wedge when you are on a links course... Have fun tinkering your bag, that is almost as good as playing 😅

I recommend checking out the Cobra King Tour. I’ve been playing the earlier version, forged FlyZ+, for five years. My lofts are weaker than the new King Tours, back then they were closer to the new Cobra CB’s. Was all set to get some custom Mizunos before I hit them. The snow has FINALLY stopped falling, the sun is out, Spring is here, local courses that had to delay opening due to the eternal winter are prepping for a May 1 opening - and I'm going thru my bag as well. First to go? The BAG! So old. And my LW and SW, both SM8's, have only been ok for me. My wedges are usually great. I really need 'great' with those. The rest of the bag is pretty new and stays. Oh, new ball this year. Going back to the ProV1 - Had been using a Chrome Soft the last several years. My son gave me a yellow ProV1 to try, thought I'd like it. I didn't think I'd like it, but i was very wrong. Better ball flight all the way around for me. Great feel on the green putting. Sold. Even the yellow. Since you are looking to test and review new wedges, please please try the new Edison 2.0 wedges. They even have odd numbered lofts standard so no bending required!!! Bend the 56 to 55, offset will be minimal. Although I prefer bending 54 to 55. I prefer the vokey 46 pitch because the spin consistency is superior to my iron PW. I guess a cavity back iron would be more forgiving on strike instead of the forgiving sole on vokey. The general fitting comments here are true, when you get used to a certain length, lie angle, head weight, grip weight for each club changing equipment becomes impossible without modification. And different shafts will make T100s feel softer. Ex Nippon make impact feel softer than project x. Long story short, a fitting would certainly help the mind with removing Rick’s indecision, whether it be with a fitter or years of tinkering with clubs, or both which I enjoy.

Good video with great insights as to how you select your clubs. It reminded me of something that happened a month ago. Golfing with my brother - we haven't golfed together for 10 years and he actually gave up the game. Playing down in Phoenix, course way to crowded, we are backed up on a par 3. Talking to the guy in front of us, he has a new, full set of PXGs - got a good deal on them, said he consistently gets 20 to 30 yards more per club. My brother is interested in new clubs because we are both playing 10 to 15 year old equipment - it suits us. So we start watching the PXG guy, based on almost every golf shot he hit, his ball was only going 25-35 yards - watched him clunk two into the water on another par 3. So, just as you have a hard time giving up on old Bluey (3 wood), I play my old clubs because I generally know how they will react. I admire your skill level in actually being able to tell how different clubs react because in my case, it isn't the clubs, its the operator. Will be watching your equipment channel starting in May - thanks for your work.

Hey Rick im a brand new golfer and i am on a serious budget for now, i found a set of clubs at Dicks sporting goods called Top Flight XL and was wanting any and all comments and reviews on that particular set. I figured until i learn how to play the game they would at least get me onto a course to start learning how to swing the club and make contact with the ball. I plan on putting together a custom bag myself one club at a time until i have enough to be comfortable, also im a lefty when i swing a baseball bat and a golf club so my options are a little limited. Ive read and heard that a beginner golfer really only needs 5-6 clubs tops to get started, whats your take on that and what clubs minimum would you recommend i look for. Obviously anyone else reading this please give me your opinion and feedback on what you personally think, any and all tips and constructive criticism is welcomed. Much love to you all

Just picked up the g425 max driver and after a few times at the range I took it to a course I’ve never played and actually hit the most fairways I’ve ever hit plus landed quite a few greens on par 4’s. Looking at the g425 woods and hybrids

I have loved my 2 iron hybrid. It is my safe tee shot club, and perfectly fits the gap between 3w and 3i.

That gap can be taken up by a 5W… as someone that hits woods with height, it’s a great club for that between 4i and 3W distance… solid gapping and it allows a ton of control

Rick if you put a small thin rubber piece between the weight( stick through the screw) and the head on the driver it mutes the sound nicely. I couldn’t stand the sound of my G425 and I did this and it worked perfectly without making it permanent.

I was asking myself the same questions with my wedges. I went with a full set of Edel SMS wedges and i strongly recommend them. Crazy spin machines.

The rogue ST woods and drivers are the Ole'Bluey for me. They sit so well behind the ball and sound amazing. The 5 wood is my favorite, goes just as far as a 3 wood and sometimes driver

I put a G410 3wood in the bag this winter.... that club is the easiest, most satisfying fairway wood I've ever hit. Half the time, I hit it further than my driver

Rick, I’m sure you have considered a really wide variety of options and you obviously are a better player than I will ever be, but there is an option that if you have not yet, I think would be worth consideration. When it comes to the irons and driving irons, it might be worth considering that whatever kind of irons you go with, you do 4-P OR maybe just 5-P, and pair that with what would traditionally be closer to a “game improvement iron” for a 4iron and maybe get a 4hybrid of that same “game improvement” style set. That way from around 185-200 yards or closer you can keep the feel and shot shaping exactly where you want it, and for the 4iron and either a 4hybrid or even a 3iron you can go with something that is SIMILAR but would have more forgiveness and distance. Like I said, you know more than I do, but I think that would allow for you to feel as confident and comfortable as possible to know you can hit the “long irons” where and how you want, and you can hopefully also get a good middle-gap filler between the 5 iron and 3 wood. Also, if you’re still reading this, I love the channel and really appreciate all of the tips and tricks on how to make your swing better. My dad and I both took your advice and we each had our best rounds ever shortly after implementing your advice!

Rick, you should do a video on giving old Bluey a make over. Get the colour changed and get a dot on your putter. Might be a good way to get viewers existing clubs brought up to date without spending fortunes on £700 drivers. Bling your swing in Durham do a great service for these ( I’m sure others do too) they did a Sldr mini driver for me. Looks brilliant

I was in the same spot at Rick with wedges. 50, 56 and 60. Had the Vokey SM7 56 bent to a 55 and then had an even 5 degrees of loft difference between them all. Working pretty well so far.

Golf clubs are funny. When I began playing 25 years ago, the ping sound was what everyone wanted because that meant you had one of those new fangled titanium drivers. All the drivers I started with were steel and sounded like hitting the ball with a fence post. Friend came along with his new Titanium, wow that was so loud it made everyone know this guy has to be good swinging a $500 driver.

I was so happy when you revealed the bag. Good for you Rick! Maybe think Mizuno for irons and wedges?
