"I wouldn't mind" is classic British understatement, and it means "I would quite like to". My favourite example of British understatement is when one of Nelson's generals had his leg blown off by a cannon, and he said "By God sir, my legs come off" and Admiral Nelson replied "By God sir, so it has".
@nicksykes4575Ай бұрын
Nelson was an Admiral, he didn't have Generals serving under him. The guy who lost his leg was Lord Uxbridge at the battle of Waterloo, and the exchange was between Uxbridge and the Duke of Wellington, aka Arthur Wellesley.

Ricky’s being really nice about Karl in this interview. He’s making a point that he’s not an idiot and is very friendly. - We’re all idiots with our best mates because we know it’s a laugh. - I know you know that. But it still triggers me when people think Ricky is bullying. Christ, if you knew half the stuff me and our mates done as kids. We’re old gits now but we still try some funny stuff when we’re left alone

With people here in the UK when we say "I wouldn't mind" doing something its more of a thrown word, we kinda use it as an attached word, we don't actually mean "well if i have to then i will" lol

Yeah, I think I'd say "I wouldn't mind trying x" meaning if I have to go out of my way or put effort in to arrange it happening it probably won't happen, but if someone else did the organising and effort part for me and I just had to be available I'd give it a try 😆

@@jgreen2015 Exactly that. It's British understatement, Americans tend to do the opposite and overstate things, nothing wrong with that either.
@jgreen2015Ай бұрын
@StuartBaillie-q2d a trait expressed even in the cadence snd tone jn which we speak. Eg the sentence "I am sorry that I was late but I was caught in traffic" The key words are "sorry, late, caught, traffic". A brit emphasised these key words but understating the others. "Sorry 'm late 'z Caught 'n traffic". We don't even bother with the "I am" at the beginning and the other conjoining words become so understated as to become mere sounds. Where Americans emphasise key words by exaggerating them "I am SOORRYYY that I was LAA-AATE, but I was -CAAUU-AAUUGHT in TRAAAAAFIC" 😂 It's really fucking mind blowing when you realise that we as brits dont really say the joining words but mumble past them. Until it's spelled out you kinda subconsciously assume all the words are there. But they're not!

Fun to watch, especially Ricky speaking of KP's 'genius, in many ways'. On the interviewer saying, 'wouldn't mind' about going to Wales (she is Welsh too), she was using that British understatement that doesn't gush, and is said like it's a a restrained in-joke. If Mandy were to move to Britain, in just months she'll also be saying to someone 'wouldn't mind', and 'well, not exactly what I would have chosen,' or or 'not very pleasant' to describe a horrible experience or sight, ' a bit of a nuisance' for a serious illness 'not bad' for some breath-taking sight or successful event, or reflecting that 'Antarctica is rather cold.' All that British understatement is not usually taught; it's just wired in naturally! Lots of it is heard in Karl, Ricky and Steve's comments too.

British breakfast TV tradtionally has the time of day in the corner of the screen because they know a lot of people will just have thrown the TV on for something to look at and listen to while they're getting ready for work. This way the can watch and keep an eye on the time so they're not late. Maybe a little obsolete in the age of the internet and mobile phones but a nice, useful tradition.

I'm a simple man - I see Mandy, I click (and when I see Karl I click even faster) Also if you want more Karl to watch then he plays a more serious role in a series called "The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe" - it's about a man who fakes his own death to get the insurance money with his wife. It's based on true events and it's one of my favourite recent dramas. Karl's acting in this is genuinely fantastic (although he wasn't in it much), and he's very believable as a detective. If you want a good drama to watch then this is a good one :)

I'm guessing Karl's delayed happiness is due to editing out the bad stuff, in particular the pressures of being somewhere unfamiliar, where you don't fit in. Or maybe he finds it easier to be happy at home, which then imbues happiness onto his memories. Or maybe he suffers anxiety in the moment that overrides the happiness, but when the anxiety fades he's left with the happy memory?

"BBC Breakfast." ..... ba dum tssss........... 9:07 was the time at that moment. When Karl dislikes the moment in the moment, but likes the moment looking back on it ... when you (and possibly some in the comments) were wondering if he was "on the scale," I wonder if (scale or not) ... if he gets his thought process going in a way that might look like it's on the scale. Because after that answer in this one (when he looks back on the moment, and then not even liking being on set, here), I get the sense that he processes things in a certain way, like maybe he decompartmentalizes the moments. It's like the wheels in his brain is going while in the moment, trying to figure things out, and he tries guessing what's next. But then when it's over and he can look back on it, the moment is able to sink in, and he can think about it, now that it's over. That's the sense I get in Karl's thought process. It's like he isn't in the moment until the moment is over. Whereas you and I would be in the moment during the moment. And also, whenever he is away from home, at all, it could be grocery shopping, for him to not even like being on set, it's like "home" is his only comfort zone. After seeing this and hearing that answer and that explanation, that's the sense I get from Karl. I get what the lady was saying with the "I wouldn't mind" thing. It's not that she would be looking to do it, but if she got the chance to do it, she would do it / be fine with doing it. Sometimes I feel that way.
