I work in customer service as well at a sporting goods store and i carry out 300 pound treadmills, 300+ pound weight sets, basketball goals, personally spend 15 to 20 minutes at times fitting people to bats or equipment and helping them learn techniques that will help them. Thats part of my job and i am helping the customer the same as a waiter and waitress. So im not sure why they would get tips and the rest of all of customer service doesn't. True story: I went to a Sports Clips to get a haircut, just a haircut, no shampoo, no warm towels, no bullshit. It wasn't the first time I've been there either. When I got ready to check out, there was the cost of the haircut, a tip screen that could not be bypassed (that the employees don't keep), and a donation screen that wouldn't let you past until you made a donation to their cause. My $18 haircut ended up costing me $30. Pretty sure that was all illegal, but any kind of work to take them to court to recoup the costs would have cost me more than the haircut and the extras. Needless to say, I never went back again.

Every individual who makes less than the current average household income has the right to ask for a tip. Every individual who makes less than a comfortable living wage (and those are drastically different numbers in case you weren't aware) still has the right to ask for a tip. Basically, if you're single with no kids making less than 50k/yr you get to ask for tips. If you're married with kids and make less than 100k/yr you still have the right to ask for tips. Average cost of living for a single person is $2,500-$3,500/mo. Average cost of living for a family of 4 is ~$6,000/mo. Doesn't sound bad until you consider the places with similar cost of living are low population farm towns that are exponentially growing and will price out the new residents within 10 years. The areas of highest population have INSANE costs of living. Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Miami, Jacksonville, Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Denver, New York, etc. Those select few big city areas make up over half of the American population. And those select few big city areas all cost double, if not triple, the national average cost of living.

The dealer said they could deliver it for me if I was willing to spot the driver a tip for the gas since he would have to make a side trip on his run up north. I was more than happy to give $50 for as much money they saved me. He totally wasn't expecting it either.
