Ricster Diaries Episode 61 - East Yorkshire Round Robin 2 | 19/05/2022

Filmed on 19/05/2022. After being living at Scarborough for nearly 9 years now, I noticed that since 2018 haven't covered a Round Robin Day Rover for quite a while. The East Yorkshire Round Robin.
Rather than travelling anti clockwise, we will be travelling clockwise via Bridlington. For the first time on this day, we will be covering a morning and evening rush hour trainspotting sessions. The first one of the day being at Scarborough for just over 2 hours. Now, there were only 2 Nova 3 sets available on this day which is why we see some Nova 3 diagrams which was taken over by class 185 Diesel Desiro units. Network Rail was carrying out some works onto the tracks which caused a few delays to a Transpennine Express Nova 3 set and also a Northern class 170 Turbostar arriving into Scarborough.
Next, we then catch the 09:01 Northern service through to Bridlington. Now, for those not aware; The Northern class 170 Turbostar units all have ex First Class areas where the seats can recline for extra legroom. The 170's have workings on:
Scarborough to Sheffield
York to Harrogate & Leeds
Leeds to Hull
At Bridlington, we film a good hour and 20 minutes where we get a rare chance to see 2 for 1 trains in action with one train arriving and one departing at the same time. The timetable changes at Bridlington means that the Northern services has less time to continue for Sheffield or Scarborough. The Sheffield trains between Mondays to Saturdays runs fast between Bridlington and Hull for faster journey times. Northern has bought back their hourly services linking Bridlington to York via Hull which runs local stopping but does provide a mixed bag of 155 and 158 units. After trainspotting, we then done some sightseeing for a very short time at Bridlington South Beach. The reason for this is because it is the 10th anniversary since myself and the family moved for the better life to Bridlington.
Next, we then catch the 12:00 Northern service through to our third station of the day being Hull Paragon Interchange. For a class 155, it was quite a fast ride reaching Hull in 44 minutes which is very impressive. We get straight down to trainspotting where we were approached by security but by friendly staff who was also a train spotter. But, we find ourselves switching between the platforms to get as much notables as we can and also a pairing of class 185 Desiro units came of Hull sidings which blocked the views slightly. Afterwards, we also get an hours worth of automated announcements from the waiting room at Hull Paragon.
And to our forth and final station of the day, we catch the 16:15 Northern service running to Halifax riding as far as Selby. There were some issues at Selby; Due to a broken track machine blocking the York to Leeds line, the trains were subject to delays and cancelled services. It did cause a few issues with just the one cancelled service. Since our last visit back in 2018, Selby railway station has now become a busier station with additional services running. We did try and get automated announcements but the announcements did miss out on a few train services.
Finally and our journey home, we catch the slightly late running 18:32 Northern service through to York with to say the least quite a few surprised along the way. But, at York the broken down track machine was causing big problems to train services running in and out of York and Leeds. We catch our final train home which is the late running 19:17 Transpennine Express service through to Scarborough. Sadly, some of the passengers on the train took their anger out on the guard of this service. So, I spoke to Transpennine Express via Twitter Messenger and the welfare people did confirm that the guard was okay.

I love these Round Robins Ricky, and it was great to see the south shore of Bridlington. I had 2 family holidays in this region of Bridlington in the late 1970s & had a great time on each occasion. It was good of you to show concern for the poor guard, who, after all, was only doing his job & didn't deserve to be on the receiving end of abusive behaviour. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

Wow, I am very happy in some ways this has bought back great memories of your family holidays. This outing as well is to celebrate the 10th anniversary since myself and my family moved to the Yorkshire Coast. Yeah, this was due to a broken down train and the passengers had no right to treat the guard the way they did to him. I had to take action to ensure the guard was okay hence why the TPE Welfare Team contacted him. Very relieved he was okay. Thank you Richard :-)

Great Video Ricky, Love Bridlington and Scarborough spent may holidays there as a child we have Cleethorpes 13 miles away but no comparison

Class 155s have a great engine tone. Are they Cummins?

I agree with you David. The 155's use the Leyland engines. The Northern 158's are the ones which use the Cummins engines. There are some Perkins 158's which are based at Heaton in the North East.
