I remember this being the opening track at their gig in the Barrowlands in Glasgow just after the album was released. Was a good 10 minutes of that keyboard before the song kicked in. Such a good night.

Great memories. I remember this was a new entry in the chart at No.9 the same week that Jesus and Mary Chain charted at No.10 with 'Reverence'. (February 15th 1992) Happy days!!!! I was a big fan of Lush as well who were putting out some great stuff in the early 90's. :-)

Such a great band, almost getting misty eyed. Truly underated band that got fogotten and lost in the wealth of britpop that came after. Don't get me wrong, the Roses, Blur, Inspirals even Carter USM, PWEI and others made for such a vibrant scene circa 89-92, but Ride seem to been forgotten. Still have all the singles (12" extended versions natch.), nice that Andy Bell still has a working gig though....

'Ride the greatest band in the shoegazing scene'. probably true. only because mbv weren't really part of the shoegazing scene. they just started it by making an album everyone ripped off. then finished it by making another that was impossible to rip off.

@gumpish Hmm, I guess for me the distortion and subdued vocals, plus the sense of escape in the chorus. Maybe it's just that I was an angsty teenager when this came out and it resonated with me. Maybe have a look at the lyrics to "Nowhere", "Time of Her Time", "Castle on the Hill" and particularly "Going Blank Again" and "Decay"

MBV and Slowdive made beautiful dreamy, ethereal sounds that we listened to at home but Ride made this wall of sound pop we could actually dance to, in a clumsy, gothic, air guitar kinda way, that is.

Was shoegaze like the grunge of UK ?? They sound similar
@vesavius10 жыл бұрын
Not really, no, but I guess I can see where you are coming from. Grunge was more influenced by punk and metal, whereas Shoegaze came from bands like Spacemen 3, MBV, Cocteau Twins and Jesus and Mary Chain. Shoegaze was more psychedelic than punk, if that makes sense? US bands like Sonic Youth def had an influence though. Check out band like Pale Saints, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, and others if you like the sound. The era threw out some great tunes :)

+Faisal Hammad Shoegaze was was huge reading Thames Valley and Oxford and all and was about to break throigh mianstream and then Nirvana happened..... RIDE are considered one of the best groups in the UK not to make to make it big at the time... they were the next big thing and then they just went out of fashion or rather did not go mainstream and became super cult.... with more rock... and hence they became cult adored legends.... I totally adore these dudes they blew me away first album ! It was very cool to be walling baout with their album and the Stone Roses one with anyone knowing Ride in my world .........
@vesavius8 жыл бұрын
Prof. Harvey Crichton Hrm, I am not sure we can blame Nirvana for their falling out of grace... They were still charting well with "Leave Them All Behind" in '92, and their second album did really well. I think it's fairer to say that internal problems are what killed them. Their later lyrics tell a stark story... And then a misjudged pandering to Britpop when they returned was the nail in the coffin (though, I still really like How Does It Feel to Feel and the like). If anything, I would say that their audience was stolen by Suede, who hit hard in '92, and then, ofc, Definitely Maybe dropped in '93. Poor Ride never had a chance. As good as it was in the moment, their sound was played out by '92. Who knows? Maybe if they had chosen to experiment more with electronica like Gardener apparently wanted then they would have gone on.

So shoes gaze music is basically get some big amps turn the guitars up to fucking eleven, turn the vocals down, and pretend that you don't really know what you are doing, when really you do?......so then basically any wanker can make music like this then..........so when you shoes gaze should you be wearing Nike, Adidas or Clarks or it don't really fucking matter right...........
