When radio shows gained popularity, newspapers tried to tear them down. Radio did the same to T.V. T.V. did the same to the internet. And now the biggest Internet news providers are doing the same to you. If history is a good indicator, the future looks good for the nation.

Classic cycle of New Media: -Medium is created and used by "testers" -Medium gains small following and finds it's niche -Medium begins to catch up to the established media, and begins to eat into their revenue, slightly at first but with an upward trend -Medium eventually overtakes or equates to the established media in user base, popularity, revenue , and just about every other metric -Medium becomes one of the established media -A new medium is created by an innovative group/individual and the cycle starts again That's McLuhan's cycle, and I think we're at about the 3rd step with internet video sharing. The fight back is almost understandable, but also somewhat pathetic; they fight back because they lack the will, creativity, or passion to adapt to a new environment, to a new medium. They've chosen their revenue stream to live out their careers on, and they want those revenue streams to stay good and high for as long as possible. One day maybe all these media can co-exist without trying to tear each other to pieces trying to get a bigger slice of the pie, but the cynic in me says that the cycle is just gonna keep moving on, and old media will die out either gracefully or kicking and screaming the whole way down.

Wait then who is Phil gonna try to tear down
@bighippie8101
@bighippie8101 7 жыл бұрын
Well I see two options for how Philly could react to the scenario proposed; 1.) The Nietzsche Response; Phil becomes what he once fought against and adopts the underhanded tactics of sensationalism and yellow journalism in order to maintain his job security and lower the personal risks of adopting a new medium. In this case, he would likely try to tear down the members of this new medium. Who they would be and what their medium is I cannot say for certain. Could be holographic vloggers, could be virtual reality reviewers, or something none of us have really thought about yet. That's the best part of New Media; you can never be 100% certain about anything, so you learn that the best method is to go with the flow and hedge your bets as much as you can (take inspiration from existing media, spread your content over multiple platforms, etc). I would label this the unlikely scenario, however. 2.) The one I expect; Phil maintains his strong grasp over the concept of what it means to be New Media and continues to strive for innovation and to be the face of new platforms as they are created. Why do I expect this? Again, because Phil has a grasp of the concept and understands the risk/reward of New Media. It's an attractive gamble, since there's more than money on the line; artistic merit, innovation, and if you're REALLY good and you gain a massive following that stays with you long enough, a legacy that will outlast you. I've oversimplified the outcomes, of course, and this is still just the way that I see it. I'm studying New Media, so if anyone would like to add on to this, correct me, or say their point of view on it, go for it

As a journalist who regularly reads Forbes and The Verge as well as an avid watcher of your shows, I think you hit it right on the head that these sites feel threatened with how popular you are, Phil, especially among young people. A constant topic of conversation at my newspaper is how to get young people interested in newspapers, but the answer is they just aren't and don't want to be. Print papers are great, but we love mixed media and how the medium of KZbin allows for a more direct and honest way of doing news, at least with the way you do it. These sites are also pandering to thier older crowd by putting all KZbinrs in a box and saying "this is why you shouldn't watch these people" as a way to validate to their loyal readers why they still matter. It's also just really sad to see journalists with large reaches completely misrepresent someone like that, doesn’t do research, and just blatantly lies. The couch thing? That's just embarrassing for that writer. Also, you don't cover world news??? Are they serious?? 80 percent of your show is world news. I'm going to aggressively tweet at that (crap) journalist to defend your honor.

I live in Ohio, right under Columbus. The heroine epidemic here is truly awful. I have lost a handful of family members over it. My girlfriend and 2 of my best friends have lost family too. If an Ohioan has not lost someone close over it, they almost surly know someone who was or is affected by it now. I rarely meet anyone anymore that does not have relation to, or know someone on heroine. Overdoses are too common here. What really sucks is they know exactly where it is coming from in Mexico, but since it is across the border we do not have jurisdiction there and can not do anything about it at the source. So until then, Ohio will remain an underground heroine hub for the cartel. If you guys want to know more about it there is a "Drugs inc." episode about Columbus, and Ohio's heroine epidemic, it was really informative.

My brother died from a heroin overdose that started out with pills in his teens. I'm so glad you're bringing light to this issue. I had no idea how rampant the opiate/heroin addiction was until after he died. I even had no idea that opiates led into heroin. I implore anyone with an addiction to reach out and get help. Dealing with my own emotions after his death has been hard, but I think watching my parents suffer has been the worst. No parents should have to bury a 32 year-old.

I've been on opioids for the last couple of years. And I've been seeing and hearing how the government are trying to make it harder to get them. While I see how it can become addictive and it does need to be monitored a little bit more. The sad part of that though is people who are chronically ill and chronically in pain will suffer. I think more people need to find different and better methods of trying to reduce the pain of those who use opioids for that exact reason.

With regards to the opioid addiction topic, topic I am extremely passionate about. Let me start by saying I have been in the healthcare field for 10 years starting out as a CNA working my way through school to become a Nurse Practitioner today. The opioid epidemic is a multifactorial problem that cannot be reduced to one simple cause or reason. However, I will note, that when the medical community began to classify pain as a vital sign, (which in my professional opinion it is not) and ultimately it was correlated with patient satisfaction is when everything went down hill leading to opioid addiction in some patients. Pain control is absolutely necessary after major surgical procedures, and various other medical conditions/problems but for some patients the thought of being, even in the slightest amount of pain unfathomable, and unfortunately that is an unrealistic expectation for many. For so long giant healthcare organizations where and continue to be too concerned about patient satisfaction and not patient safety. Providers were pressured to prescribe sometimes dangerous amounts of narcotics to control a patients pain (because pain is what the patient says it is) in order to increase patient satisfaction ratings and/or just get the patient of the office. If you sprain your ankle or have a toothache you do not need a narcotic, plain and simple, so please don't ask for one! The low quality, click bait crap that is modern mainstream news is what has driven me to get my news elsewhere. I appreciate how Phil looks at all sides of a story and does his best not to put a partisan slant on it. And since when is Phil a right winger? I always thought he was pretty moderate, neither leaning extremely left or right. You can tell that neither of the authors of those articles have ever watched more than a few minutes of any of Phil's videos.

He's definitely libertarian, but libertarians can be weird like that. They're surprisingly agreeable until you run into one of the stranger libertarian policy ideas they're more enthusiastic about--they confuse me at times, but I appreciate the ideological consistency. I enjoy it though, I think it really helps him appeal broadly across the political spectrum because he's happy to pounce on anyone with generally shitty behavior, left or right.

I like to call Phil as being "coherent". Not left, not right and not in the middle (I feel the ones in the middle always tend to just one side, at least in my country). He takes bits from all over and form an opinion. I think ideally we'd all be like that... people are too stuck on the terms left and right, which kinda makes them go more to extreme points. If people were to think about all the issues and be able to understand both sides, maybe even agree with something from the opposite side, things would be better. Don't know if it makes sense to anyone else. And sorry for the little rant.

On The Verge and FORBES article: I don’t think it’s a concerted effort, It’s too big and too wide spread for that. I think it’s more that they have fostered a culture that looks at KZbinr’s and none traditional media as not worth taking seriously. They fostered that culture until they can’t see it any other way. Then when channels like yours do it better than them, they must explain it somehow. An historical example of this is Ignaz Semmelweis. might be a bit obscure, but I think it explains my point.

I love this channel because you actually research your shit before reporting it. So many news outlets comment straight out of their ass and so many seem like such amateurs with a personal agenda. You however, respectfully argue both sides and back it up with facts, and if you do fuck up (which rarely happens), you instantly make it right and apologise. While so many of these "journalists" choose to slam youtubers and act like butt hurt pre-teens. It's not news, it's tabloid garbage.

The reason the drug death rates rise is probably that of the war on drugs itself. The war on drug attacks more the source of drugs by adding more restrictions to chemicals to make the drugs, in which makes manufacturers of drugs use more dangerous less restricted chemicals in which is more likely to harm or kill a person using said drug. It's hard for people to seek help as if they do, it is most likely added to the permanent reccord, so now they can't earn a good enough job and therefore turn to drugs again. Now a good alternative would be to have health centres and allow people to seek help without the fear of prosecution and then counselling to earn a job, with that job money they can further improve life rather than spending it on a drug addiction, this has worked before in Switzerland. This comprises the four elements of prevention, therapy, harm reduction and prohibition. If I got some stuff wrong, I apologise I did some research but a while ago.

The only thing that The Verge did was validate you. At least in my opinion. They seem to only attack you when you do their jobs better than they do. You're my only source of news nowadays so it makes sense that they want to try to take someone down. Think of it like this, when a person is drowning they panic and try to press any object (or person) below them in order to try and stay above water. They act unpredictable and irrational but in this case all they can do is drown or get with the times.

MSM viewership has been waning for a long time, and instead of evolving their model they realized that making increasingly partisan content can boost this a lot, especially given how polarizing Trump is. However, what they fail to realise is that these gains are temporary, and the credibility loss has sealed their fate. Given that most MSM outlets are on the left, they're now so far left that anyone that's even remotely charitable to Trump appears to be a nazi in their eyes.

If I was to ever overdose again I would gladly take my chances with death rather than inject myself with that demonic liquid from hell. It's also not a drug you'd want to take everyday just to prevent overdosing/going back to addiction since even if you are not physically dependant on opioids the drug will still block the receptors in the brain that are responsible for reward and pain killing mechanisms which may end up causing anhedonia and trouble if you end up in an accident and need pain relief. The best solution is methadone and buprenorphine treatment for addicts untill they feel they can live without the drug again, though appearently for some people that doesn't seem to work either.

I don't believe it is the all time solution to opiod abuse but I believe it is the solution to the deaths of people who od I believe that there are treatment options for people who are addicted like you mentioned but this is a life saving treatment not a get rid of addiction treatment as for the pain I believe that most would disagree with your comment of rather risking death vs being injected with the medication because pain is temporary while death is permanent to each his own if you'd rather die you'd rather die but the medication is a second chance most don't get

Musicandbooks Make sure journalism is really what you want to do for the rest of your life. If you truly love to hear and tell tales, to learn about new things every day and then write millions of words in your lifetime about other people's lives, then you'll do fine in journalism. But if it's not your passion, or if you care more about making money, you might have a hard time with it. Or you might end up losing your integrity.

I'm from Ohio and the drug problem here is horrible. Here in the Cleveland suburbs on average a person will know 5 people addicted to drugs (not including weed which I honestly don't see as all that bad). Everyone I know has known someone who died from drugs. It's a really sad problem that no one really knows how to fix.

I think some big corporates etc. look down on indy work as 'not proper', however if it's higher quality, more relevant, more reactive to it's audience, it's unsurprising that these big to eat their market share. As an aside, I loved this video, re-subscribed to DeFranco ^^

In response to the Forbes article on Philly D. Why in the hell would I trust a corporate media that is driven too fit their agenda and narrative. Phil is getting so big because of the CONVERSATION. When I watch the news I am left where I started, understanding very little about the issues at hand. When I watch Phil and others like him I am not only exposed too both sides of the issue but I am also EDUCATED on the issue. I LEARN something. People do not want to be fed a narrative, maybe some do but the masses want real conversation and journalism. News flash I don't agree with Phil on everything. AND THAT IS OKAY. I value Phil's honesty and commitment to the real story and truth.

1:03 "If you're someone who looks more outward than inward" really succinct and politically-correct way of describing the mental health issue I'm struggling with. I see at as describing people who look for self-validation externally rather than internally. Thank you, Phil, for acknowledging that this is a real thing and helping me solidify the existence of this mental "structure". Obviously, needing someone to acknowledge that this exists to therefore realize that it is true is testament of myself being someone who looks, "more outward than inward" but part of growing is accepting where you are and living in it.
