That Rick Kelly is surprising because a lot of his work is amazing. He’s using 100 year old reclaimed pine from the Bowery (CBGCs) area of NYC. King Arthur apparently owns that dragon guitar now.

One of the main reasons people bought TOM bridges alone back then was to replace the wooden bridge saddle on archtop guitars. For example, a guy with a 1955 Gibson ES-175 would have a guitar that came with a wooden bridge saddle. If he wanted the intonation advantages of a TOM, he could simply buy the ABR-1 alone and put it right on the wooden bridge base that was already fitted to the guitar's top, notch the saddles for the strings and then be able to fine tune the intonation of the strings individually. That's something that can't be done with a wooden saddle.

That Dragon guitar is made by Carmine Street guitars, a shop in New York which has been around a while. That one is defintiely a bit of a miss, but most of what they do is pretty cool work with old timber. Cindy Guitars who works there does wicked stuff with wood burning designs. I think Rhett Shull did a video with her there recently.

That little zig zag thingy is a thousand bucks too many, but it's CUTE. And hey, Carmine Street Guitars is a LEGEND. This guy makes mostly Telecasters from "Bowery Pine", wood that has been harvested from old buildings. His co-worker is a really good artist, she paints fun stuff on guitars. I think Rhett Shull has a video where he got something designed by her. The store is tiny and crammed, not even sure it's still there, but it was always worth a visit.

Gibson/Epiphone before they ripped off Deans Split tail v for Zakk Wylde. They ripped off Schecter with this Epiphone zakk Wylde graveyard guitar. Steampunk never works on objects that aren't originally mostly metal. A fake sort of rusty brown finish on a guitar just looks, well, fake. The gym locker grating is more tacky than appealing. I’m surprised as hell you don’t know who Rick Kelly of Carmine Street Guitars is. I’ll agree the dragon guitar is not very appealing, but I’m sure there’s a story behind why it was built and strong chance it was special ordered by and custom built to a customers specifications. I’ve long wanted a hand built T-style Rick Kelly guitar made from the reclaimed old growth pine Rick salvages from hundred year old Manhattan buildings when they are demolished. Bill Kirchen plays Kelly guitars and is how I discovered Carmine Street Guitars in Manhattan. Watch the documentary “Carmine Street Guitars” here on KZbin. You have the wrong impression of Rick and his work from this one example.
