The Hillclimb from Hell.. | MOAB Slickrock Riding

I met my match on this hillclimb. Even worse, I nearly got stranded..
Previously, I had met up with a subscriber of the channel to do some adventure riding in a relatively easy area. Neither of us thought we'd do any kind of technical riding, but we were wrong..
Since I had the smaller bike, it made the most sense that I scout out the terrain ahead of us before my friend on his Tenere made the attempt at the hillclimb ahead of us. The climb was extremely challenging since you had to go fast enough to maintain momentum, but slow enough to be able to pick your lines as they presented themselves. In the end, I decided to go back. However, that didn't go to plan. I wasn't paying attention, and I slipped over the edge...

You don't know your limits until you've tested them. Based on how easily you pick up the bike, you appear to be physically fit. That makes a huge difference. You rode some of the hardest trails there. For me, moab was all about clutch control and maintaining momentum. Side note: slick rock (like hells revenge) got its name from the lack of traction with wooden wagon wheels with iron bands for treads.

I was 100% testing my limits most days out there. Tho I made it much harder on myself than I needed to by running crazy high psi and dual sport gearing. Next time, I'm switching gearing and airing down. I workout pretty frequently which really helps with endurance especially on some of those trails where I was really lifting the bike often. I agree with the clutch control and momentum part entirely!! I was constantly self sabatoged cuz I would start going up a section, then I would stall from bad clutch control or from losing traction with the high psi I was running. Then by the time I tried to go from a stopped position, I would have no room to get momentum going! It was brutal but super fun. Thats so rad that thats where the name for slick rock comes from! It makes perfect sense tho.

It was such a gnarly area dude.. Its all about margin of risk! I'm usually down to try something (even if its a struggle) but I know when to call it. You gotta know where to draw the line so you don't get hurt more than scrapes and bruises.

I ride steep rocky climbs in the Nevada desert - I run heavy duty tubes at about 12 psi haven't had a problem with pinch flats. I run 13-52 gearing on my KTMs. Best bet when losing momentum is turn around right there and start over. Trying to waddle up a hill is how you get your ass kicked (ask me how I know 😂)

HAHAHAHA, The INFAMOUS "Rose Garden Hill"!! I HAVE ridden up it twice! Several times down. On the 2 uphill rides (technically 3 times), the first time was with a group, I was on a 1993 Yamaha XT350, stopped a few times, no lay-downs or get-offs. Rode back down and then back up, ... with the same results. The second time was on a 2008 Honda XR650L with a bald original back tire, laid the bike down 3 times on the way to the top, rough enough! Saw a guy on an uphill try GO AIRBORN, GHOST RIDING "BEHIND" HIS BIKE, FLYING OFF the trail a bit higher above the place you did. Landed in a big patch of cactus!! His day was over! On one of the downhill runs a guy with a Kawasaki KLR650 (NOT KIDDING) who had busted off his rightside foot peg earlier in the day in Rabbit Valley, and then lost his front brake lever at the top of RGH, RODE DOWN with ONLY the rear brake and NO FOOT PEG! for support!! Crazy shit happens at RGH!!

Nicely executed. Now I'll be the annoying dad... You've got a fabulous bike, the ultimate compromise tires (I've used that pairing on my 950 Super Enduro for many years). That was a vicious challenge that bested you, but one that you didn't let humiliate you. You made the right move in turning back, because by the time you'd rescued the bike, got it upright and yourself back on it, you were likely too hot, too tired physically and too mentally tweaked to continue upward productively. You (like me) probably would've gotten hurt and possibly expensively damaged the bike just to gain another 10 feet before hitting the pub. This is all good. It shows ego at the right setting, knowing one's limits, etc. Because a climb of that magnitude has a potentially high cost of failure, which you factored in. One thing I've learned in 15 years of riding big heavy ADV bikes in tricky terrain (starting at 50), including long, seemingly terrifying climbs with lots of loose rocks is this: To make a hill like that one, you simply must not stop until the top, unless you're lucky enough to rest on a flat-ish section with sufficient room and traction to get back up to speed. In order to pull that hill off, you need to have the fitness (which it seems you have) and the total focus required to plot the optimum line on the fly, along with the confidence in your abilities to commit to that line and not abandon ship mid-journey. You might also want to talk yourself up like Chris Birch does (and I now do), reminding your hands not to overgrip, your shoulders not to overtense, your knees to stay close to the tank, your feet to do most of the steering and your eyes to look where you want to be in 2-3 seconds, not at what's trying to stop you. That's what separates the Birchys from the mortals. It's a tall order, but just deciding it can be done -- assuming equipment is all in good order, and then staying calm and happy all the way, playing it like a game, a physical-mental chess match -- will serve you well. I rode a bone-stock 701E in Moab in 2018 for four days on hard tracks and found its low-end torque dangerously terrible (it stalled a lot in bad situations and riding the clutch all the time was no great fix). This problem I later discovered is easily remedied with an air intake upgrade. Is that bike similar at low revs? Related note: A thing I've been doing to beneficial effect on hard hils is deciding on a minimum RPM to prevent engine bogging / stalling out. You know what that is, so you just have to throttle up to it and expertly ride the clutch through places where you need to be slower than those RPMs would allow with clutch out. If you're really serious, I'd also recommend trials riding training. I've yet to do this myself, but all my riding buds who have became better riders overnight. One last thing. Don't ride the very hard stuff alone. You know why.

Loved reading this comment. Yeah, I think theres no room for a big ego when riding in places like Moab. I'm stealing this line from a pro mountaineer, but it is all about the "margin of acceptable risk". I gotta know what is acceptable to me, but then firmly draw the line where the risk just is not worth it. A lot of these factors like you mentioned go into that calculation. Heat, exhaustion, mental status, physical health, bike health etc.. The issue for me in that specific time was since it was my first time riding in Moab, I had stressed too much about getting pinch flats. That caused me to overcompensate and run way to high PSI. This made hills near impossible since I would lose traction and stall out. Then I am trying to pick up from a stopped position which is damn near impossible. Next time I go to moab, I am airing down 30% and changing to a more aggressive gearing. I've seen some of Chris Birch's videos and he has some really good advice. The trials training is also really good advice and I am sure I could really benefit from it! I do my best to ride with others when I can, but I always carry my garmin in reach 🤙🏼

1. A rekluse would make that way easier. 2. 12 lbs is a good spot for knarly loose stuff. 3. I have a rule when I lay a bike down. Bike off, helmet off, drink water, find shade, enjoy scenery and take 5 minutes. Try it. The adrenaline will wear off and your brain will get back in its toolbox to make better decisions. 4. I had a smaller front sprocket I only used in Moab. Quick way to get some more slo go. 5. Where is your 20 feet of webbing for a tow strap? You bike is perfect for that riding. I spent years riding Moab on my XR600r. But was smarter than you and avoided rose garden hill. Poison spider and hells are just plain fast fun though. I've left milts malt shop and run hells and back to milts in 45 mins. Burn baby burn.

That hill climb wasn't beyond your abilities...... you were just too tired. Moab will do that to you. Chews you up and spits you out! Since my buddies and I started our yearly trek to Moab back in 2011, we've decided that riding two days, taking a day off, and riding two days is the perfect blend. (And an easy trail doesn't count for a day off) You rode some of the toughest Moab had to offer..... pretty darned impressive. Hahahaha I was down there for 2 weeks filming almost every day except for a couple of editing days. It definitely got progressively harder to keep the energy up and carry the 40 lb pack vest with all my gear.. I think your tactics are really good for going out there. The next time I go there I'll have to follow a similar schedule for sure. Thanks for the support! Its hard enough to ride out there, but filming it too makes it a whole other battle.. Its relatively easy to find! So according to the comments it is called Rose Garden Hill and you can get to it by following onion creek all the way out of the canyon and onto the plateau. Then once you make it to the plateau, follow the trail until you get close to the ridges in front of you and there is a trail that juts off to the left. Just follow that and you'll get right to it! If I go back, I'm gonna air down my tires 30 percent and change my gearing and then I think its doable! Theres that a lot of that silty sand on top of the rock too so its extra slick. You might even have an advantage if it rains the day or two before you go! Good luck!!

I couldn't agree more. It was my first riding trip to moab and I spent much of the time there riding solo and so I ran crazy high psi cuz I was stressed out about pinch flats. In hind sight and in watching the footage, I wish I aired down like 30%

@@madjack_757 Pinch flats are a concern though, esp up front. I had my front tube literally explode at 18psi when I hit an unseen rock in shadow on a trail. I instantly lost all pressure, and steering, and went down hard at 35mph in half a second. Luckily was fully armoured and body not damaged. Tubebliss are a pain, and mousse, while the best for hard enduro, won't last long if you ride fast on hwy to get there, as one tends to do in Moab. Tubeless is good too, until you get a flat and can't re-seat the bead (unless you're competent at the explosive method!). It's a bit of a toss-up, and compromise is a big part of it.

HOLY CRAP, that hill was sketchy. I have a similar problem on my KTM, there's times I can't get both feet on the ground on technical terrain. I call it "vertically challenged". Hoping you can make it up to my neck of the woods this summer so I can play tour guide similar to how Vic did down in Moab.

That stuff is so hard and its probably also pretty warm. I think you would do well to take some enduro courses and with the amount of fitness you have you would probably progress fairly quickly through going to a place like this and just drilling enduro tecniques. It would probably make for a great series as we watch a good trail rider transform into an enduro rider.

One thing I discovered with my T7. It eats up knarly hills. Stuff that I think twice of on my 450 the T7 a lot of times will eat up. I think the amazing torque and extra weight to keep the tires digging helps a lot. Not saying I could do this hill. Just the T7 never seems to stop amazing me

Having said that, I was in that in between skill set a few years ago where you are in the green and blue trail skill set, but not good quite good enough for the black trails. Its all good man I respect the opinion! I've heard that a bit from some of the videos I've published from Moab. The thing is, I have never in my life ridden there and I am doing it on a bike that is set up as a dual sport bike. It is a 250lb bike (stock weight) with a desert tank which adds even more weight, running dual sport tires at street psi, stock suspension, and 16/48 gearing.. If you threw me on a 300 with like mx52 tires at like 12 psi, id probably be really good out there. So idk man take that into consideration when you see me strugglin in some areas. Plus keep in mind, I am equally focussed on filming it.

Man, I know what it's like battling a heavy bike on techy trails. I have a CRRF450RL and its probably 40-50LBS heavier than your Husky. More of a desert bike with a desert tank, but I love the challenge of getting it up rocky, rutted trails.

You get it dude! I've gotten loads of comments during the course of the moab series pointing out that I'm struggling in the rocks and I guarantee most of them were riding smaller two strokes! Its a complete other kind of riding when you're on a heavier dual sport. I gotta ask btw, how do you like your 450? I grew up riding hondas but never rode their big bore dual sports.

@madjack_757 Man, I love it! It is a pure off road bike(450X with lights). In stock form it doesn't like going slow. You have to change the ECU and add some weight to the flywheel, but once you do that, it chugs. Still, it being a desert bike, it's born to fly in places like Ocotillo Wells(our home range) so it's just happier racing down washes. It's also surprisingly good on the highway if you absolutely have to. I do wish Honda would make a little 350 version that's more capable on singletrack, but I won't hold my breath. Will probably end up adopting a Beta to be the Honda's little brother. Love your vids, man. You should come to Southern California for desert season.

That sounds like a killer setup dude!! I've heard the same thing about my 501 with the ECU. I heard a new ecu basically turns it into a whole new machine. A neighbor of mine actually has one of those beta two strokes too and he loves it. One time a long long time ago I rode in ocotillo! I was a kid and I remember seeing some of those guys do those insane jumps over some sandstone formations. Sometime i'd love to get down there during the winter season cuz once the snow shows up in Idaho, the bikes pretty much are locked up for the season. Stoked you like the videos man 🤟🏻

The dudes who frequent Ocotillo Wells and do the big air stuff are from another planet. My idea of big air is a dropping off a 3' ledge 😄. Keep up the great work, sir. The solo adventure stuff is where it's at for me. Obviously, you won't always capture the most aggro riding, but there is something to be said for taking calculated risks and knowing to preserve equipment and self while just being present.

It was a super gnarly area for sure! Definitely a struggle on a heavy bike too.. I have so many videos I am working on, but in the future I am going to likely do a video on my vest setup which is pretty extensive. In the vest I carry camera gear, survival gear, my sidearm, a garmin in reach, tools, water, maps, tire tubes, and snacks. The vest is like a 40-45 pound thing when its fully loaded. @@madjack_757 Yep, that is high, but I'm the same way. I run high (18psi) because I don't want to deal with a flat on my KTM or DRZ. Neither have beadlocks, both of them NEED beadlocks.

Thats funny, that was the exact time I was there. I was going to go to the mosko event, but I got sidetracked with other projects. So i've heard this was called rose garden hill apparently. I didn't actually know the trail name tho. We were just exploring the area. I definitely use that drone a lot too which helps with learning to land it in odd places lol!

At first I thought it didn't look as bad as you were making it look. Then reading in the comments, I realized this is Rose Garden Hill. So the camera is not doing it justice. This Jeep road is way harder than it appears. I've done it on an XR250, but only with a friend helping me lift it over all the ledges. The proper way is to get more forward momentum and keep your RPMs up. You can't do this slowly.

Yeah I agree that I probably should have tried to keep momentum up better. My issue is that I was riding a FE501s which is one of the most powerful motors Husqvarna offers and when it catches traction it can loop out from under you. So I was trying to go jusst slow enough to be able to pick my lines as I was going up (cuz you can't see the whole hill from the bottom and plan your lines). I was in 3rd feathering the clutch too so that I would keep the torque a bit more manageable too. Either way tho, that hill whooped me 🤣🤣

Ha! I am just scraping by with the revenues coming from the channel. I work as a videographer as well to keep everything going. Its super exciting to see the channel grow and my skills increase too! Ill check my goggles and see how they're doin! I think Moab is now by far one of my favorite places to have gone riding. It is so unique and i've never ridden in a place like it.

@@madjack_757 haha makes for good content! I’ve asked before about your Motoz because I’ve never run them but pretty much anything grabs there. Used to run worn stuff because it eats tires. You’ve got the UHD tubes and rim locks. Throw some heavy duty zip ties in your pack and lower your psi. Trail repairs suck but it would get you back. I think the higher psi is a big killer for you out there. Instead of deforming and going over you just bounce back and lose the momentum. Either way keep up the great vids! Makes me think I need to take a vacation back down there.

Jack... too much air in rear tire. Better grip at lower psi. 12 or 14 Better feel and bite.. you would have walked right up that hill with lower tire psi.

I definitely agree. I spent so much of my time in Moab stressed out about pinch flats, but I really would have had so much easier of a time if I aired down about 30%.
