We just got back from a few days in Boston. The "T" is a funny system - its neither fish nor fowl. Its not a bus system, its not light rail and its not a subway, but it has elements of all three. Like a bus, it runs at street level and has to stop for traffic and red lights. But like a subway it also runs underground and has block signals and spacing requirements, just like ordinary subway trains.

It's definitely a cool system! Very unique and full of oddities like you mentioned!

Not gonna lie, as someone who lives in a suburb of Boston, if I saw a giant greenline trolley car pull up right behind my SUV, I nearly shit myself thinking it was going to crash into me😂

I'd definitely be worried! Good thing they're all experienced drivers, as long as we don't do anything too crazy in our cars we should be fine. I can definitely imagine it getting my heart racing though!

I remember how the announcements had a regular voice, then it would change to “Bus connection” in a voice that sounds like the person was ill, then it would switch back.

and when the announcment says ''change here for the silver line'' its the same voice as bus connection. im not sure if there is more announcments where that weird voice talks.

14:12, that’s actually not true they’ve had the type 8 LRVs since 1998. They had to be constantly taken out of service due to derailments and speed issues, etc. The last of them were put into service in 2006-07

Yeah.. it’s nice to meet operators like that. 17 years from that date was 2001. When those LRVs were in service, 🤷. They might upload a video of those when they were new. They did one for the red line trains.

The Kinki cars were built starting in 1985 and finishing in 1988, but in 1995, 20 more cars were purchased to meet increased ridership demands. Both are very similar in design to each other, but the later one has a stainless steel exterior for better lifespan and improved life.

Don’t get me wrong, the rehabbed ones are very nice, very shiny and very clean. 14:12, slight error: The Type 8s have been around since 1998, but they were in and out of service for several years due to multiple derailments, axle size issues and serious braking problems. The full fleet doesn’t enter service until 2007/2008. Ya, that’s almost TEN YEARS. The Type 8 LRVs’ reliability was true garbage. Some people call them “crap on wheels”. The T payed more than $220 million for those cars, crazy. 😮🙀

Btw the reason there is always a newer car and an older car coupled together is because the newer cars are low floor and the older cars are high floor. There was a big lawsuit against the MBTA for frequently running two older cars together, preventing ADA access. So now they always have one high, one low.

Except the tunnel? Sounds kinda backwards! In any case, as long as it's truly for your own personal use, you're legally allowed to record it. Operators that don't want to be in videos just make up the rules. I can't guarantee you won't end up talking to cops, but you have a legal right.
