Lydian is great, isn't it? Had written a song 2 years ago with all Major 7th chords, but for my newbie ass, that just meant lyrics and chords...no melody. When I began trying to produce the song in Garageband 2 months ago, I knew I would have to make some modifications to the song in order to properly harmonize the melody. The Major 7th chords were: CMaj7, FMaj7, AMaj7, DMaj7. I knew I wanted to utilize Lydian, so the simplest and most logical way, I felt, was just to make the FMaj7 a chord with the notes F#, A, C, E - effectively just changing the root to F#. One could argue it's an Am/F#, but I think in that context it would be called something different. Thanks for this video...that observation about how the B# changes the sound of the Dm will certainly come in useful and opens my eyes as to the use of Bass, which is another thing I am trying to learn. I produced my own cover of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" and made the Bass the melody instrument. Not sure how well that went in the eyes of the "sophisticate", but I like it.

Ya know Rancid probably isn't your cup of tea, but if you want to hear an amazing/underrated bassist, Matt Freeman is amazing. Look up "Journey to the end of East Bay" My dad was a Jazz bassist, so I had big shoes to fill. Hope all is well, take it easy

The first time I ever touched a bass was 35 years ago when our bass player didn't show up at a gig. We drew straws to see who got to do it, and I lost, or won. LOL It was a long night, but I just played the bottom 2 in a chord, or 1's and 5's. Some ascending and descending lines, and tried to stay away from what the drummer was doing. LOL I later found a 60's Fender P-Bass with a bad neck. I bought a Mighty Mite fretless neck for it, and love it! Still have it and use it. Flea is one of my fav bass players to!! Also Dusty from ZZ Top!! And a lot more actually, it really opened my eyes to bass. 8) JMHO --gary

4:52 "this is note is not in the key of F" so would this song be an example of how to use "wrong" notes in making melodies in bass? Samuraiguitarist did a video on guitar where he did a solo with wrong notes and he did them on the weak beats of the music and not on the downbeats

Now wait just a dog-Gone minute, you’re tellin me the bass and guitar are tuned the same (minus the top two)??? In that case, one could actually do this entire exercise on the six string? I think it would be fun to crank out some bass lines in the middle of regular guitar song.

The bottom 4 are the same. I have an Ibanez ES style guitar that I keep heavy flat wound strings on so I can play bass with it in case our bass player does not show up at a gig. It is also a backup for my Gibson ES335. I used to bring a bass, but trying to cut back on gear to lug around. LOL --gary
