Wow so helpful thank you! I used to water mine once a week, even though the soil was damp. I'll check carefully now before watering. Also when you spray water for dust to wash off, do you place a towel in the floor?

Most of the ones that I have tried growing have always in the end succumb to scale insects so I have given up on them now.

Hello there, Thank you for your wealth of information. I have a areca palm that's in a 4 inch pot. I bought it about 6 months ago and it is only grown about 1-2 inches since. I moved it outside months ago and I put it under my fig tree in the shade. Its now 09-08-16. I am in SJ, CA and it still under the tree, the temperature is still nice and warm. to me the plant is not growing. Any thoughts on what to do? Thanks

Areca Palms grow best in tropical climates. This means morning sun (not a west facing except winter time as long as it doesn't freeze) , warm and humid environments. Most all tropical plants do poorly if night time temps get below 45 degrees.I would tell you put this in the sunniest spot you have- mist the leaves at least once a week and water the roots when the top 2 inches are dry. I fertilize mine in the growing season which means I do not fertilize any of my plants the winter which is Nov, Dec, Jan and February here in Texas. I also only use organic fertilizer like fish emulsion, kelp meal, seaweed solution etc. I grow mine in pots with a well draining potting mix. I also get a cheap mix and amend it myself by adding some sand, perlite and a little vermiculite. Usually 2 parts of perlite and vermiculite wit 1 part of sand per 2 cubic feet off bagged potting mix.
