You also need the 64 pattern 4 pocket chest harness for the 30 round FN C2 LMG magazines, to complete the 64 pattern webbing.

Without a doubt, the worst set of personal equipment ever devised.... both in quality of design as well as conceptually. That said, great presentation, Simon, of this little known set!

The first time I used that buckle, i could get the damned thing open. We did test the V40 mini-frags, but they were never adopted.

The gaz mask would go the other way in the bag. That is to say, eyes up, facing forward. So, by sliding your hand inside the bag, you would grab the mask in the correct position. You then with the other hand, slide it inside the elastic and up over your head and face. This is done eyes shut and face toward the ground to avoid mist falling down as much as possible. Once this done, you would then open the outside pocket, get out the bag inside, tear it and slip the decontamination mitten full of absorbent powder. Remove your mask, powder your face and put again the mask...

Great information regarding the donning and decontamination procedure, thank you! Very similar to the British way of doing things. I'm not 100% clear on your description of fitting the respirator in the haversack, could you perhaps drop an email and I can show you the illustraion from the manual on which I based the information in the video. Admitedly I think it may be for the 1982 Pattern but I will have to check.

At 18:43, a quater turn to the right and the mask will be in the right position.

Al is correct. The respirator was slid into the case upright, filter first, with the eye pieces outwards. The drill was to slip rifle between knees, place helmet on rifle muzzle, open case by pulling tab with left hand, reach across body with right hand and remove mask. Left hand was placed in mask so the mesh piece to which the elastic straps were attached was touching the back of the left hand. the left hand then pulled away from the mask stretching the elastics.. The mask was then slipped over the head. Hard exhale to clear mask. cinch straps as needed. Yell "gas, gas, gas" to warn others. Replace helmet on head.

That webbing was great. Especially, easy to adjust as you change layers of clothing compared to the precious webbing with eyelets and hook. The 1982 pattern added special tightening belts that were even more practical but not as ordely looking.

"That webbing was great". Opinions vary. Yes, it was much more easily adjustable than the 1951 Pattern and the lack of diggy-in hooks made it more comfortable, but the lack of magazine pouches and the fall-apart feature were not so hot.

The 64 pattern webbing was as Veritas Valebit and britishmuzzleloaders have said "ridiculously flimsy and totally inadequate for the armed forces of a NATO member" and "the worst set of personal equipment ever devised". As a retired Canadian Army officer who put up with 64 pattern for three years, I totally agree with you two gentlemen. Whoever originally approved this equipment for issue to the Canadian Army should hang his head in shame. This person obviously knew nothing about what soldiers require to do their job in the field. The 82 pattern web equipment that replaced the 64 pattern was a significant improvement. Regards, D.A. Stolovitch, CD Captain 2 Military Police Regiment / Canadian Forces Military Police (Retired)

I can only assume it was exceptionally cheap and made those with their eyes on the budget very happy. Not the way to go about things.

Thankfully now but a historic curio of how not to design load-bearing equipment.

Could you please do a video on 1939 vs. 1945 kit and equipment just to see a comparison of how much the kit changed over the war. Just an idea, great vid as always

Tape on shell dressing was called gun tape and was O.D. Green and not black.
@RiflemanMoore
@RiflemanMoore 3 жыл бұрын
These suspenders arrived with the shell dressing attached with electrical tape as seen and I've left it as is based on advice from others and evidence from multiple period photographs which I'd be happy to share. I understand gun tape was used for this purpose too, as I assume you did, but electrical tape was definitely used as well. Don't worry, there'll be a good dose of gun tape in Part III! It's one of the difficulties of presenting kit from this time period, there are often multiple period-correct ways of doing things dependent on individual experience.

the design is terrible ... i cant believe that was tested and approved for use, even if you take 1970s budget constraints into consideration, am wondering why they didn't just adopt British or US kit.

It's so simple and poor that brings me to mind the SOVIET Gear… Poor suspenders and poor belts, simple buckles and poor quality just barely meeting the requirements of using…

It's certainly more akin to Eastern Bloc gear in terms of the design of the subspenders etc.
