If you'd like to get some insight into the downfall of Rift... kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6C6ZGmIn81grZI A large chunk of the top tier raiding community, we were treated very poorly by Trion. This was a great game, for quite a long time. I raided with the top guilds, worked directly with the class Devs. They listened to feedback and made a ton of changes... until eventually the higher ups stopped wanting to listen. Once people started to criticize (I use this term loosely, as we started out just trying to give feedback, that was largely ignored), then things got out of hand... it was never perfect, but as things piled up, it got worse and worse, until whole raids were getting banned. Asking about anything on the forums got you banned. It was a dark time, but this was and will probably forever be my favorite MMO ever. It's really too bad the mishandling got so out of hand.

I raided a lot and loved it :) But in the end they were made so insanely difficult. Just one tiny little mistake and it was a wipe. Otherwise loved Rift, especially everything you could do in the open world, and especially the artifacts collection There was so much to do in Rift :)

Hey, do you know what happened to the skeletal horror (I think he was called?). The little bare bones skeleton? I had nostalgia about him and went to go find and play with the little fella only to find that I can't find him anywhere, either online or in game. I know he existed due to seeing him on the wiki and in photos but I can't find him ingame. Did they remove him these past 12 or so years ago or something? I remember he was the first necromancer summon but now he's just gone, replaced by the skeletal zealot. What happened to the little fella?

@@VagrantVideos Microsoft is trying to acquire Blizzard as I type this. If they fail (unlikey) then they may drift over to other MMOs - Rift would be awesomely suitable for acquisition, revamping, and ongoing content (but will probably have a subscription model attached)

@@VagrantVideos True. There are so many options now in 2023, including free to play games with brilliant graphics as well as ongoing updates. ESO for one (after an initial purchase, which you can find cheap in sales). For all its faults, Rift was and still is one of my favourite games so Trion have my thanks for all the good times I've enjoyed. :)

i played Rift from release until about 2016 or so. It was so much fun (did mostly PVP) and just loved it. It's sad that a game I used to love has fallen on such hard times because of incompetent people.

I played Rift a lot when it was live and most active. I had a lot of fun playing around with my own experimental builds in pvp. I never reached max level, but I had tons of character mid level. Rift died around the same time every company tried to spit out a wow clone. I'd definitely return to Rift if it had a touch up in graphics similar to what FF and WoW has done. And ofc, fix the nasty p2w cash shop.

I was there in 2013, the game was thriving. There's a ton of content, world bosses that have hundred of players joining till it lags (Volan), and the pvp was a blast. The raid are enjoyable still using teamspeak at that time met friends from Aussie and New Zealand. It was the best gaming mmo experience of my youth.

used to play RIFT all the time with my father back in the day and its almost strangely nostalgic since I was so young when I was playing it. He got me into a ton of MMORPG games etc, had a lot of fun with RIFT and its sad to see it in the state it's in now, would love for this game to be relaunched or something, it desperately needs new ownership...

yeah me too about ten years ago i played at launch. went from wow to try a new game where leveling could be done in pvp battlegrounds from lvl 1 .... it was awesome then wow patched to take the idea .... rift lvl 1 pvp with a goblin shaman was legit fun break from wow at the time but i love wow forgot to play rift as much

I put about 100 hours into it when Covid started, and I enjoyed my time with it. I hit max level, made a kick ass Grave Lord character and really liked the world events, transmog system and the ease of joining parties. It is a fun game being fucked over by a disinterested ownership group.

Some really fun games out there that just don't have the player bases or developer support anymore. I just started playing Everquest on the P99 servers, and you really get the sense it is a passion project. Wish more games had their souls put back into them.

@@DevilLobster82 it’s like old school FF11. The game REQUIRES that you group up past a certain point. Regular enemies require group synergy ala you need a Tank, Healer, Support, DPS.

Sad, I liked the game. Also, played WOW some time back and loved it. Stopped about the time the Death Knight came out. It got too expensive on retirement.

I played RIFT for years. I left WoW, needed a new MMO, and there was RIFT. I miss Telara. It had such promise. I would spit in the jerks at Trion Worlds that sold out-they killed a beautiful game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic cam out 9 months after RIFT. Almost my entire guild of 80+ players decided to move over. We went from two raid groups to some casual partying pretty much overnight.

I've tried playing Rift recently in 2024 but it's REALLY difficult to get into the game for me because of the classes, there are just so many options and no real clear guide on what each subclasses exactly do with many of them seeming to really do all the same job and overlap way too much. WoW really had it down with making each class being very distinct and defined in how their toolkits worked with it being easy to figure out how to make it work. Rift seems like it might be worth it but I believe it needs a structured team with clear ideas of how to make this overload of information more digestable at the beginning of the game.

I played Rift heavily on release until it went free to play. Back in the day is was super populated and so fun. I met so many great people through it and have fantastic memories from the game. It's sad to see the state that it's in currently. I remember after it went FTP, the monetization system also killed the auction house because you could buy whatever you needed, ruining the in game market. I would love for this game to get picked up and relaunched. It was such a great time and it has so much to offer, it's just hard to play an MMO without..the MM part hah. #saveRIFT

Surprised that there is no community support around this like a private server or petition to the devi.... err Gamigo to release it as open source. Rift could be brought back to life via crypto in-game currency and NFTs, all while being completely open sourced and given a new engine (Unreal 5). For example, if you as a developer create an NFT item, feature, dungeon, whatever that becomes popular, it could literally be a passive income which would incentivize more development by an already approved developer by the community. The concepts in Rift are solid, proven to work, it just needs developers.

RIFT was one of the best MMORPGs at the time & then Trion got a little "cocky" and made some random titles that didnt really go anywhere. I believe they sold RIFT to Gamigo for something ridiculous like $20k? RIFTs raids were a lot better than anything WoW produced at the time as well. Unfortunately they implimented a cash shop WAY back that felt pay to win, and folks werent happy. Trion were their own downfall and got greedy :( Such a shame! Made a TON of friends in what will still be one of the best MMORPGs to have ever come to fruition, Thanks for the video! Its so unfortunate you didnt get to play it in its prime!

oh i remember when i played this in 2013 for 1 or 2 years, ive played about 50 mmorpg´s and this is one of the 5 or 6 that didnt bore me before max lvl, furetheremore there was always fun/original events to do and some of the quest were very fun (once i had to decide which of 3 "enemies with each other" help to build a sand castle to win xD)

Rift as a big MMO was dead long before Gamoga took over. The reason was a fundamental design flaw that also made the first two years so insanely fun: GMs actually controlled the game world. GMs actively started PVP invasions via NPCs and callouts and then players joined - resulting in some of the most massive server battles i have ever seen in a MMO. And then GMs could ocassionally just start a bunch of Rifts - the game's main idea. The Rifts back then were insanely hard and didn't scale at all. Making them a real server-wide event where endgame players teleported into low-level areas to fight off GM controlled Rifts. But that's the design flaw: For 2 years they had to pay hundreds of GMs and closely manage what they did in the game world. This was impossible to keep up for a giant MMO for so long. So then they turned it into a automatic system, streamlined it and after year 3 there was also some very forgiving level scaling introduced. So all the challenge and the sense of community just got crushed and it turned into a bog-standard MMO, not much different than Runes of Magic or Shayia or other MMOs that just take the standard formula, streamlined it and milked it via automation.

Rift was amazing and I miss it a lot, everything started going down hill in the third expansion. They got rid of a lot of pvp systems to appease casual players. They did a classic launch which was not the best as it was not exactly fresh experience of first launch as it had newer systems and was bugged to hell. The item system was completely destroyed as instances no longer used unique loot tables and instead it was more of a token system which made repeating content pointless really and led to a feeling of a smaller community. Trion was just making too many bad decisions. Ultimately gave it over to gamigo which is fucking terrible and milks it in maintenance mode thinking monthly carnival events which have been around forever is somehow new content. Game is dead and it’s a shame, killed by the developers and not the community.

Dude this game was amazing when first came out. The build customize was great. Before the major expansion that release the Tempest soul for the Warriors cause Force Warriors to be Range in order to be a good DPS and most raids have a few fights that force you to be range and then Raid guilds Demanding you must have a range for tops DPS quotes. Warriors were suppose to be melee range DPS wrecking balls but They killed it bad

Warhammer Online had Public Quests that progress through multiple stages similar to Rift’s Rifts. It’s been so long I don’t remember how massive PQs can get though. Return of Reckoning the private server revival has been around for awhile but I haven’t checked out what the pop is like.

Rift is not a bad game, in fact it's a pretty solid game. The main problem with the game like many games is that the company just cares about making money and could care less about the gamers actually playing the game. Therefore why would any rational player want to continue to play and support a game when developers don't even continue to make content or even back the game. There's plenty of MMO's out there where developers still want to make money and will give their support and activtely back games. One of the examples is Old School Runescape. It's sad that a lot of developers just are like "Let's put major cash shops in and ruin the game just so we can make fast money". The heck with the players .

I did many many years ago and i Got invited over Forum For a Party at Gamescom i Life in Cologne so IT was Close anyways i was 15 But looked Like 19 they gave Out a huge Menü of free Drinks and food in one of the best Locations there IT was Like the 40th Floor rooftop and all Community Managers and devs was there they habnded Out free ingame mounts and Gifts IT was one of the best memories from a Game to irl Event Ive ever Seen i also should mention that they picked US all Up from Gamescom with a huge Fully Panorama windowed Bus which Ive never Seen before even tho IT was only 2 Miles to the Location really For that fact alone i Loved Rift But would never Play IT due Low Pop

If, like City of Heroes Homecoming and Rebirth servers, a group of dedicated individuals who knew what to do, managed to get up a private server and start developing aspects of this game, when gamigo shuts it down that is, this game would probably once again have a good population. Endgame in rift is the thing. Raiding is like vanilla wow 20-40 payer party and much control with fifty abilities.heroics too is very difficult, its an actual challenge

I spent 5 years playing Rift. I would mostly kill new low level players on PVP servers in Sanctum, level zones, etc once I maxed out. It's a lot of fun because you can kill their NPCs, they ask their guild or get on high level alts, and then half the time I would mostly kill them anyway. Lots of fun, autism kind of suck, lots of fun

I got into playing rift really late, like towards the end of WoD late. It was one of them MMO's i was looking to kill time in since i didn't want to renew my sub. Didn't stay for long because legion came after. But in my opinion it was still a refreshing experience similar to when i tried Runes of Magic back in day when it came out, the multi class systems was the biggest pull for me. As WoW classes had grown stale and were becoming more oriented around the spec instead of the class, while becoming more homogenized. These 2 for me stood our the most as the closest to wow a clone could get while being similar to all the other F2P games you would see back then also. Legion had invasions which was similar to RIfts elemental invasions, which i thought was really cool. To bad they never introduced a Multi class system similar to rifts in WoW. Classic could be the one to bring a system like this to life, but while i don't have real hope for this type of thing to happen i did find something in the private server section that brings a multi class system to WoW so i know at least its a possible dream to have.

I stopped playing the game in 2015 (not because of the game, because of my computer) when we had the Plane of Water and (finally) the Plane-touched Wilds (which was on the map since 2011). I got a new graphics card amongst other things and didn't bother play the game (and I am not sure why). I was level 55 on it. At some point someone told me that Gamigo acquired it and they made it all about money and ruined the game.

Played it when it released. Quite a lot. The open world huge pvp was great, visuals were great and all, crafting was great and collectibles too. However it was p2w since the inception and some things were just broken.

Not really. In terms of PVE, the game wasn't P2W. WHy? Because you could only get the highest tier equipment from dungeons. Wish people would stop misusing that term...

@@wewqweq The term doesn't only mean that the single best item is obtainable using wallet instead of game mechanics. It applies to a broad range of possibilities which affect the gameplay. Be it PvE items, PvP items, collectibles, many things. If there's a cool RP item with ridiculously low drop chance and only a handful of people can obtain it due to the rng involved but someone can pay out 200$ to either get it or drastically improve odds that still counts as p2w. If you can multiply the effort in the game by paying $ it doesn't matter if its gold collection, pvp power or pve numbers on a glass cannon character....th defnition of p2w is gtting the edge over other people by means of paying substantial amounts of rl money...And by the way, I didn't even mention pve in the op so get lost.

I used to play this MMORPG with my Father ALOT, we weren't verry competitive players, we would usually hit level 30 or something and delete our character to start over, Untill i continued playing more and got different characters to max level. because it was such a good experience back then in its Early years of when it was in its Prime. We played WoW first but din't liked it as much and we loved Rift more then WoW. The Amount of creativity in character customization in the Classes and Transmog was SO GOOD. I miss those days. I Pray that a other developer gets the Game. SWTOR is almost the same age as rift and that MMORPG is still going, I still play SWTOR, so i hope Rift gets pulled out of LifeSupport. It looks like a forgotten game. It's such a shame to see the Fate this game has. It was SO good back in the day, in a other universe this game would still be alive with active development, but unfortunatly, not here. I hope this game comes back to life, but... ugh i fear as much.

IMHO Rift was ahead of its time and gamers weren't ready for it. I thought at the time it released it was better than WOW. We were in a world first type guild right before Hammerknell(sp) dropped and almost 90% of players got FOMO and went back to WOW during Cata. But those 6 months were really fun and amazing! The problem was any good mmo coming out at that time couldn't compete with WOW due to the FOMO and time invested by millions of players during that era (just my opinion anyway).

i loved rift, nice pvp and pve, artifact system was amazing, but when i look those games today like this lotro, aion, DDO,EQ2 the graphics turn me off, i install them time to time and in few hours i reinstall them, hard to deal with overage graphics, eitherwise are good games

I don't like you saying why not just play WoW because the talent system in Rift is far far far FAR superior to any talent system WoW has ever had. So I don't care for the comparison. Rift has way more unique builds and classes and gameplay. Now, having said all of that Rift is a pretty dead game with no new development and the gameplay while "OK" is not as polished as WoW. The Character controller is not as smooth. TBH though how many Tab target games can compete with the character controller / Engine of WoW. At least from a smoothness / feel WOW character animations and spell particle effects, to me, are the gold standard for a Tab target game. Rift is a good game. Very good in fact. It just need people and a dev team to polish it. They also need to gut a lot of what was added to the game in regards to the non stop dungeon loop thingy that exists within Rift. Making the acquisition of platinum super easy.

I was playing this bsck when it launched actually. I loved it. I thought it was better than WoW cos the rifts were so entertaining. I eventually went back to WoW though cos everyone else was still playing WoW. Downloading it again now cos i think the class system will be fun to tinker with again. I imagine it'd be a miracle to find a party while leveling, although stats on Steam have shown quite a big growth in players in the last few months

Like with so many MMO´s they do not really get a chance because everyone for some reason expects a new game to have the same amount of content as one with multiple expansions. I played rift from release and for about 1 year but most people went back to wow like always when we play something new. And the reason usually is it has less content or it is "not wow 2" in terms of how things work.

I would play Rift if it didn't sound like a dead game, there's too many dead MMO's out there... and I can't really recommend current WoW either because that game is almost unplayable since post-shadowlands exp release. only wow-classic is worth playing, but the populations on those old exp's aren't reliable I've heard (i don't know since i never tried any version of wow-classic, since it seemed like a quick fad that died down as soon as they moved onto the next classic exp)
