Schon’s well-documented history of guitars includes a plethora of Gibsons and Kramers, but his current #1 is a NS-15 Neal Schon Signature Model from PRS (he also carries a few NS-14s on the road as well).
Every aspect of the design had Schon’s fingerprints on it and it went through many incarnations before finally settling into the current specs. The NS-15 is strung up with a set of .009-.042 D’Addario strings (he ups the 6th string to .046 for dropped tunings).
Most of Schon’s guitars feature a Fernandes Sustainer as well as a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 pickup in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. He uses medium Dunlop celluloid picks, although recently he’s been using his fingertips more during solos-which he explains has opened up different tones.
Even though Schon has a guitar boat loaded with PRS guitars, his go-to on “Lights” is a relic’d Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster. The bridge pickup and headstock is reversed and the relic job is straight from the custom shop.

@@marko6831 yeah he’s the complete opposite of underrated actually! The band he’s in sold what 60 million albums? The greatest hits album spent like 15 years on the billboard 200 charts which is the second highest in the history of recorded music, was still selling 500,000 albums per year as of the late 2000’s when nobody was buying albums, it’s 15xs platinum.they still tour arenas, he played with Santana at 15 years old, he has guitars and gear built for him that fans can buy over the years, widely respected by all the pro players and the last thing I’ll say he’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Pretty hard to call someone underrated when they are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you want to use the word underrated use it for a guy like Terry Kath who would was the best guitarist of the 70’s but didn’t get the credit because he passed away far too young he pretty much was one of the first shred guitarists and had an absolutely amazing Voice his picture should be next to the word underrated in the dictionary that what the word actually means.

He messaged me back approx 15-minutes post my message to him, his responce was " Love em " Schon not only a stellar guitarest, but also has a stellar sence of humor. 2nd to none within pauses, one can never predict when/where his next pause will occur. Schon most likely has forgotten more tricks, than most guitarests will ever know. What a great person he truely is to acknowledge his believers.

What the heck? Schon was playing with Santana when he was 15 back in 1969. From then until now I'm sure he's played through tons of equipment...literally...and he knows exactly what he's doing when it comes to equipment and has a legit reason for why he's using whatever it is that is part of his rig. So when there are people posting on here saying crap about his choices when it comes to his volume, rig size, etc...I'm guessing that, simply put, he knows something that they don't. And, as Austin Millbarge once said, we mock what we don't understand.
@brianjones8432
@brianjones8432 7 жыл бұрын
I think a good part of it is them never having had the opportunity to use the equipment. Hell, most people commenting aren't even players. Another is Schon has always embraced technology. He was using guitar synths as soon as they were out, was always changing his rig up with whatever was new at the time. One thing that always made him interesting as a player was that his tone kept evolving. So it's no shock to see something like the Axe FX sitting in his rig now. I also wouldn't be shocked if there is a Kemper mixed in there in the next few years.

Having experience doesn't automatically make him right in his choises. It's easy to disregard valid critisism with the whole "Well try to do it better then" arguement. Sound isn't the only factor when it comes to choosing gear for these people, maybe he got tired of using the old gear and thinks changing into a more modern setup will make him reinvent his sound. Doesn't neccessarily mean it's always for the better though.

From what I understand, the guitar sound has NOTHING to do with wood construction ( I'm talking about electric guitars ), it's about the pickups, strings, neck, fretboard, frets, settings, etc...Correct me if I'm wrong.
@Deebz270
@Deebz270 4 жыл бұрын
You're partially wrong (or partially right....). All have a bearing on the voicing of an electric guitar. Though (as a guitar tech) I'd say that the deciding factor is the electronics/signal chain. With PRS - it is mostly the neck/frets (as with Gibson), that give the instant playability (I've never picked up a PRS that doesn't play well... Unlike some Gibsons and Fenders... It's all about consistancy with PRS).

According to the gauges of preference their sounds are all unique. To get that sound you need that quality of strings. It's not the guitar and it's not the gear so much as the importance of the strings and their gauges to mimic that artist. Everyone has a unique preference according to the sound they want. Neil has the most wide range of effects I have ever seen of a guitarist at his disposal at one time. He's quite a shredder also. And can play some of the most incredible Slow Blues solos I've ever heard

A few posters here are knocking Neal Schon, but what sets him apart from other guitarists is that he listens, to what is happening on stage, to the musicians around him. He spends several minutes, around 7:30 (talking about tone and then into feedback) and 8:30 (recording mix), 9:30 (hearing and mixing, sound spectrum) talking about what he hears, not what he plays. I remember at a Bammies (Bay Area Music Awards) show some years ago, B.B. King was playing with Neal and Pat Travers. Its an understatement to say they are all good guitarists, but Neal backed off so as to compliment King while Travers was a bit too forward...kind of surprising because Travers has a great Blues touch-he was probably just "in the moment." Neal was listening though and worked with B.B. King's tone and style, and King was definitely the BIG dog that night. Neal Made sure to give him his due. All throughout this interview Schon talks about tone and feel. Sitting there playing you could miss how selective he is in what and when he plays in a band situation. I always thought he was one of the more musical soloists in Rock and to get that distinction, you have to use your ears as much if not more than your fingers.

Bill, Honestly, Journey was one of the "ground zero " bands of the 1980's where-who was still trying to control the media by themselves. albums and now antiquity sound boards ...All of the jargon being populated by a "guitar tech" who more likely than not was even alive during Journey's "salad days," in the late 1970's up to today's reality. I never have had nor would I have an axe to grind with Neal's guitar playing...Quite frankly in view of the fact that Journey was one of the top band to enter the "stadium rock" era, it was all an adventure for everyone...sadly Neal lost a larger amount of his hearing capabilities due to the Titanic amount of stadium volume sound to affect everyone from the stage to the high seat rafter in the coliseums. In my mind, its difficult to imagine "Journey without Steve Parry's incendiary vocal sound tracks...it just not the sane today...as it was when I was 23 years old, and Schon's about 4-5 years younger than me, sadly, no one can compress time...if it were feasible, I'm certain Journey would be on the "A" List. No one can honestly deny Steve Parry's nearly immortal contributions to this band, the music loving public, and lastly to infinity....Rock on Bay Area Band, your legacy is intact, and you're exceptionally capable of throwing down the "final fight" Legends all .....

I swear, that pedal controller at 20:07 is a re-worked ADA MC-1 midi controller. I have 2 of them for my ADA MP-1 Preamps. It looks like they cut it down to size because the MC-1 has 11 red buttons along with a LED display, where this has 7 buttons and no display. If you look close, you can see where they added a piece of what looks like wood to the left side, which is the side they would have cut off, but the wood isn't on the right side. But an MC-1 has the same shape, same red buttons and even the white stripe, although the stripe on the MC-1 is slightly above the buttons, and not in the center like that.

I agree with his studio technique. I prefer to record with the guitar lower in the mix. Totally different feel!

Lots of people saying negative things about Schon's playing, clothes, hair, etc. I listen to real heavy shit and am not a Journey fan, but I will recognize talent. Schon played the right notes for those Journey songs to take them to another level, maybe wrote them too. He's a super tasteful player when he wants to be.

Amen..... Regardless of the type of music you might like, you can always respect true talent. Hell, 90% of the metal guys look up to Schon as being a monster player. At the height of the 80's metal era he was one of the guitar players asked to come in on the Hear N' Aid project even though he was doing what most of those guys would have considered to be pop at the time, simply because they knew he was a shredder. Nothing wrong with having total respect for talent.

I like Neal's thoughts on playing in the track a lot, actually. That's kind of the way I like to do things as well if I have the opportunity. Here I thought he was just going to ramble on about his signature guitar but I really learned a few things from this guy. Thanks!

I basically started playing guitar over 30 years ago because of Neal Schon. In fact, my first guitar (that I still have) is a Gibson Les Paul. Having said all that, why on Earth would such a legendary guitar player need all of that junk? That's effects with guitar, not guitar with effects. When he plays, his signal is so wet, I can hardly make out what he's playing until he lands on note.

I met Paul once in Dallas at a show and he had his guitars out to show. I asked him to play one to try it out and he said NO you can't afford one of these. So I have made sure I never afford one since then. what a horrid thing to say to a guy.

WTF are the Los Lonely Boys? Never heard of em... oh and it's OVERDRIVE (one word). Sigh... SMH! The trend these days is for popular bands to run (via the rig) to FOH (into the PA). Aside from negating the need for back-busting back line of Marshall stacks, requiring more heavy transport (more cost and emissions...), it is easier on the ears, for those on stage. Don't you ever listen to what these guys say in these interviews?

He (Schon) mentioned that he went back and fourth with Gibson to get a signature model till it "fell apart". I have read that Gibson finally told Neal to forget it. I have read that he was, shall we say, challenging to work with. Or a PIA.

I'm sure some it is that he has been in big time bands since he was 15. People KHA and he gets what he wants when he wants it. Pvt jets limos 4star hotels. Imean he's never had to compromise on anything. So his view of the world is different than folks who have to go to an office and deal with folks on that level.

CaribSurfKing1 I agree that's a little bit picky but honestly I have 9 guitars and none of them is perfect for everything but I do think that traditional brands like gibson are very reluctant to change too much since there is alot of pride in the brand and if they do it's really not their product anymore.
