In this interaction, Walter was totally intimidated by Saul. You can tell in his body language, the defensiveness, when he flinches when Saul taps his shoulder. He was totally at Saul's mercy. By the end of the show Walter could have Saul cowering just by looking at him a certain way. Really shows how much Walter's confidence in himself and ruthlessness influenced the people around him. Saul knew Walter was a joke here, but after Walter killed Gus and truly realized his potential Saul realized he was in business with a man he didn't understand and never really did.

Watching these scenes after BCS makes me sad to see where Saul originated. Kim, Davis and Maine, everything he tried to do the "right" way, but always failed. His fall is just as sad, if not more sad, that WW.
@thejew17894 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don’t really think Walt’s was sad. Walt was reclaiming something -control over his life. Throughout his whole life, he felt like huge decisions passed by him. He always felt like every time some big opportunity came up he passed up on it. He felt like a small person and a failure. So when he found out his death was imminent, he realized that he didn’t want his life to be meaningless. So he went out and made it meaningful. He took control of his life. He went from bad faith to authenticity in existential terms. And meth making and murder aside, there’s power in that. Jimmy’s descent into Saul Goodman is a little bit different. It’s not that Jimmy feels like he is powerless, it’s that he is stuck between his brother’s hope’s for him and his own way of doing things. He wants to be accepted by Chuck during Better Call Saul, even now during Season 5. Kim is the last part of Saul’s life as Jimmy McGill that he still has. He’s holding onto her not just because he loves her, but because she reminds him of a part of himself that he wished he could be. Jimmy will eventually alienate himself from Kim or something will happen to her. Kim is the only thing tethering Jimmy to his moral side. When she’s gone, he won’t have any part of the life his brother hoped for him left. Her absence will be the final piece of Jimmy’s departure into his new life as Saul Goodman. His “Better Call Saul” saying probably won’t be used until after Kim is gone. Walt and Saul are both “Breaking Bad” like stories, but Walt’s is more “from bad faith to authenticity” where Saul’s is more, “There’s nothing for me here now. Fuck it.”

After Better Call Saul if you look at the shows/movies as a whole, I truly believe this scene is the most important moment in the timeline. Before all of this, Walt was just trying to get money for his family while keeping himself alive but after Saul came into picture and told him he could be the Godfather, something flipped in Walts mind (you can see the exactly moment at 1:52). BCS has shown that this entire story is about two men who met each other at a very important moment in each others lives, and set each other on a collision course to chaos. It also goes to show just exactly how much of a wrecking ball Jimmy/Saul is as a person.

Rewatching this makes me appreciate the Walt and Jesse cameos in BCS way more, Saul saw himself as the one that gave Walt the extra push he needed to become Heisenberg, but he didn’t know that it would ultimately bring his demise as Saul Goodman. And then within the Gene timeline, he’s trying to provide that same push to Jeff and himself, but this will likely bring the demise of Gene. The paralleled scenes between him walking into the high school and him breaking into the cancer victims house show that both decisions will lead to something bad. I’m glad they incorporated Breaking Bad in a way that actually relates to Sauls development within the Breaking Bad timeline.
