Thanks for the review. You are correct about the system, it is the same core mechanic as Servants of Gaius, but the core mechanic has been streamlined a bit (folded 6 defenses into 3 and the skills are a bit lighter), and the character creation and combat function a bit differently (its a little closer to Strange Tales of Songling, but without the character paths).

I liked the idea when it was first announced. I loved kung fu, Hong Kong films as a boy and even tried designing my own tabletop skirmish game in high school based on Last Huzzah for Chivalry (John Woo, 1979). However, there isn't a thing in the universe that I need a new system for to turn into a game at this point. LOL Between the OSR, Cepheus Engine, and Apocalypse Engine, with all the tables and subsystems from D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder... I'm good, man. LOL

Looks good, rules dont bother me these days, I take what I like, dump what I dont and add what I need, when and where necessary. With these specifically I dont think it would be too hard to take the parts out that give it the flavour of the setting and plonk them into whatever system you're using either.

You mentioned before that Sword and Caravan has rules in it covering drugs like opium and such, I wondered if they have trade off effects like the alcohol in this book. I'm sure being the designer you are you definitely did............ Oh n before you say it, I always share your videos bud

@@RPGPundit well it helps shrug off pain, or lessons the effects of certain diseases, barring that it gives euphoria which I guess could effect ones morale. There's a reason why there have been opiate addiction all through history, and it's not just because of dreams ( though that aspect has been played up a lot in popular entertainment).

💡Venger if you don't put out an RPG game on playing a character inside the hoard of Genghis Khan as they swept across everything in their path then you, sir, do _not_ know what is best in life.😑

Do you think they could make an OSR version of the mechanics and port the content into it? 🤔 Maybe it'd depend on how it does.

Are you generally opposed to character customization options like feats, traits, and this book's signature abilities? Do they detract from the quintessential nature of table top rpgs? Enable powergaming? Interested in the reasoning behind your point-of-view.
@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit 2 жыл бұрын
First: having huge lists of point-buy style options encourages powergaming and 'system mastery'. Second, it massively slows down character creation and character advancement. It tends to strongly distort play experience (as people will either have to choose sub-optimal 'feats' if they are building a character based on role-playing, or will have to choose to buy 'feats' for mechanical reasons rather than actual character development). None of this is specifically a criticism of this book alone, it's a general criticism of these types of mechanics.

Yeah, I bought this and liked some aspects of it, but eventually returned it because I just wasn't crazy about the mechanics. At this point I'm too old to learn or care about learning new systems. So I'll just stick to my OSR or OSR-adjacent games.

Well, the product is certainly involved enough that it could be used for a long-term campaign; though I'm not sure how well the system would hold up to that.
@Bedrockbrendan
@Bedrockbrendan 2 жыл бұрын
When we designed it, we expected most people would use it for shorter campaigns. We did design it with both in mind (and the long term campaign XP chart should last you a while), but our expectation was a game like this was more likely to be pulled off the shelf between campaigns or for shorter, character focused campaigns. The core system is adapted from Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate, which was designed around long term campaigns (it should be noted though that that game has more levels).

@@Bedrockbrendan , thanks for pointing out Wandering Heroes. I was curious about the origin of the mechanics. This is obviously a labor of love and I appreciate seeing this setting getting such great attention. Despite what Pundit says, a game like this benefits greatly from dice pool mechanics. Chucking fist fulls of dice is more evocative of fact paced kung fu makes than a single contested or graduated role. As a friend of mine once said about video games; a tactical game is about thinking and pressing one button, while a fighting game is about smashing all the buttons while thinking. Same with dice in my opinion. LOL Great game you've made. 👍🏻

@@DjigitDaniel Thanks Daniel. Dice pools are a tough sell, so we made it knowing that was one of the areas that might be a hurdle (and I understand why some people don't like dice pools: I see it as a preference issue). I think with wuxia, any number of systems can work (I was even toying with an idea using the old Punching and Wrestling table from 2E the other day). We actually did talk about the possibility of a class based d20 system when we first sat down to make this one. Ultimately though I tend to lean more towards systems like this one (and I had learned a lot running Ogre Gate, and wanted to take what I learned and apply it to developing this system). One of my goals was to still have a robust selection of martial arts abilities but to do so in a way that was more manageable for the GM and players (juggling Kung Fu Techniques was something I heard people found challenging for Ogre Gate: it requires a degree of system mastery to be at ease with). It's all about finding what fits your tastes. Right now there are a number of wuxia RPGs out there. So there are lots of good choices. Art of Wuxia is quite good, and people looking for something old school might enjoy something like the Golden Scroll of Justice. And there are classics like Hong Kong Action Theatre and Legends of the Wulin or Feng Shui. For newer school people, if you like PbtA games, there is Hearts of Wulin. And there is also Tianxia which uses Fate. Many more out there, those are just a few. One thing I will say for this particular dice pool system is when we designed it (originally for a game called Terror Network) the aim was to make the dice pools as sleek as possible, without some of the wonkiness that people associate dice pools with. In the case of RBRB, I made a point of timing all the combats to make sure things moved fast. But it is a dice pool system and it does use a character build system that Pundit accurately described. So I think the review sets the right expectations for people. The last thing I want is for people to expect something more old school and buy the game only to realize it uses a d10 dice pool system and an array of martial arts powers. If they want old school there are definitely other games that might be a better fit for what they are looking for. The system could make it a mismatch for some groups if they aren't into the mechanics and approach.
