@@Joleyn-Joy It's not very philosophical of you to dismiss the philosophy of the show without giving any examples. My counterpoint is that it touched a hell of a lot on cultural relativity, which is NOT a simple philosophical point. "The Prime Directive" was really a paradoxical thing, and created a whole lot of interesting decisions and discussions. Episodes with "Q" make one consider their mortality and what it might be like to try to reason with a curious, mischievous alien. In the episode "Drumhead" - there are very interesting points about freedom and innocense, a quote: "With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on we're all damaged." ... The reason time seems to go by faster as you get older is because you have fewer novel experiences and thus commit fewer to memory. You get used to routines and form habits which you don't even think about, and your brain doesn't consider things worth remembering if they happen every day. So at the end of the day, you only remember a handful of things that happened, and this makes it feel as though the day was really short simply because you only remember a few minutes of it. This also extends to weeks, months, and years.
@stitcha1233 жыл бұрын
It’s not as simple as that. There are changes within the brain that occur as one gets older
@Jam772293 жыл бұрын
Actually, this is why: The older you get the less time a year (or any interval of time) takes relative to your lifespan. A year for a 5 year old is basically 20% of their life. A year to a 30 year old is basically 3% of their life. A year feels like less time because you have more years to compare it to. Any interval of time seems shorter the older you are because it becomes an increasingly small percentage of your total life.

The older I get the sooner it gets late. Also it gets more difficult to do things, like getting dressed, so fewer things get done in the same amount of time and one gets tired more quickly. By the end of the day I have only done as much as I used to do in an hour or two so it seems like the day is over by the time I get started. Since I perceive time by what I have accomplished it seems to fly by.

It's something to do with how the brain processes familiar and unfamiliar information. Unfamiliar information takes more work to process and time seems longer when you're taking it in because it's all new so your brain is focusing on much more of it, whereas familiar information gets a cursory scan for irregularities and then is quickly filed away. The longer you live and experience the more of life in general is familiar to you - and the faster it seems, because your brain isn't hyperfocusing on every detail to learn more new stuff.

Does having an exact internal chronometer mean that Data can never get swept up in, say, a great book, a stunning sunset or a beautiful piece of music, and lose all track of time? If so, it should stay off for good. It's ironic, though. Data isn't mortal in the same way we are, so presumably, wasting time would not be so important for him. But he has the exact internal chronometer. We humans, for whom time should be precious, don't have one, and yet we so often waste time that we can never get back.

a variable perception of time can be very useful in a crisis situation. When time appears to slow down it's because your brain is essentially increasing its clock speed which allows you to react more quickly and assess all of the details accurately. that doesn't mean you are necessarily going to make the correct decision, because there are going to be unknown factors, but it is a useful ability to have.
@stephanreiken99125 жыл бұрын
There is such an easy explanation to this for Data. Humans perceive time based upon their interest upon specific moments as it is basic mechanics in the brain. We discard information that did not interest us.

And so Data turned his internal chronometer off and suddenly he realized that time is an illusion and rainbows started floating around him as he became infinite versions of himself along the currents of fate. Unfamiliar thoughts began entering his mind, like "Hey, I could also boil Riker.", and that made him laugh. He woke up in the brig, feeling refreshed.
@davidshore352311 ай бұрын
Riker is correct. How each person perceived time is different from person to person. When I was younger, I thought time went slowly, and my father told me time would feel like it was speeding up as I got older. I'm 58 now and noticed my days are speeding up. What felt like the day wouldn't end, but now it feels like I don't have enough time in the day. It's almost like my life is speeding down a hill.

Do they even want it? I'm 47 or 48, anyway, the generations below me want constant instant gratification. Video games made movies too slow for them. Nothing is special, not even family time since cell phones and ipads devour their time. Its insane.

@Possumlove "Cats are solitary they don't have that natural predisposition to "follow/blend in"." Actually, they do. When allowed to be on their own in a 'wild' environment, the domestic cat reverts to a social arrangement almost identical to lions of Africa. Females will be very pride like, raise kittens communally and hunt for the pride. Males will protect the pride either solo or partnerships of varying number of males and share the females for reproductive purposes. I believe the domestic cat uses this social structure with their humans. Females view their humans as other females for the purposes of social interaction and if there is a litter of kittens around, trust their humans to act in the best interests of the kittens. Male domestic cats treat their humans as partners that run everything. The big difference though is that if the humans are removed from the life of a domestic cat, they can handle the adjustment and continue their lives relatively successfully. Dogs, can't necessarily do this as well since they have gone from a pack to solo. In my opinion anyway...
@gmork10904 жыл бұрын
@@billyboblillybob344 People don't realize that cats, unlike dogs, are not slaves bred and trained to be solely dependent on them. WIld wolves are far superior problem solvers because of this. Cats are there to get rid of insects and rodents. Dogs show comfort with an individual by constantly giving them attention, whereas with a cat, not giving attention shows comfort and trust. A cat is more likely to jump in your lap if you call to it and then divert your attention rather than keep staring and calling and begging and commanding it. In my opinion, dogs are slaves, and cats are friends. You can kick a dog 60 times and it will still love and fear their owner. You kick a cat once and you are no longer liked until you make amends, just like an actual human friend. I love both and know this isn't scientific, but it's how it appears to me.

@Phatnaru00026 жыл бұрын
There are 2 types of time Space-time - or time in relation to an area's progression and True-time - or the overall time concerning all of reality as a whole. Space-time can be distorted by distorting the space it is responsible for while True-time is a constant
@RB747domme6 жыл бұрын
Bacxaber He just meant in context, that's all. So if one or two people were in exactly the same position, observing the same phenomena, on the same place or planet etc., they would perceive time pretty much the same as anyone else would in that same situation. That's all he meant ☺️ So, therefore, if someone is having a good time or, conversely, not a very good time, then they might possibly perceive time moving faster or slower than someone else. I think that's how you might suggest that DATA is correct, albeit only contextually.
