Note: SimpliSafe now offers self-monitoring, although you’ll only get notifications with the Interactive Plan. They also added a Google Assistant integration, and cloud storage is available separately from monitoring. They’ve also added a professional installation option for $79. After a recent update, Ring now works with Google Assistant as well as Amazon Alexa. Cellular backup is only available with the Ring Protect Plus plan.
#Ring and #SimpliSafe are two of the most popular security companies around, but which one is right for you? This video will go over the differences in their installation, components, monitoring plans, and more, helping you to make your buying decision.

Can’t choose between #RingAlarm and #SimpliSafe for your home’s security? You’ve come to the right place. Ring Alarm and SimpliSafe both have okay app ratings, flexibility, monthly contracting, and DIY installation. A key difference is professional monitoring. All SimpliSafe systems include 24/7 professional monitoring and cellular backup, while Ring Alarm gives you the option to self-monitor. Plus, their most expensive plan only costs $10 a month, $5 less than SimpliSafe’s least expensive plan. In this review, I’ll go over their system components, installation processes, professional monitoring options, customer support, and apps.

A few points: 1. In case of the contact sensors, it doesn't matter whether the large unit or the magnet gets placed on the door. What matters is that an alert is generated once the connection is broken. 2. Simplisafe does come preconfigured but does not come by default with enough sensors to fully secure a home. Adding new sensors is the same as the process for Ring; scan the bar code and place in the desired location. It takes a negligible amount of time and is a non-issue, especially for DIYers. 3. Simplisafe uses 3M adhesive to attach its components, which makes it easy to replace or relocate without damaging the surface it is connected to. Ring uses a super-strong adhesive that removes the attached surface when trying to replace, but armed with that knowledge there is no reason the adhesive cannot be replaced with 3M prior to installation. 4. Simplisafe 2nd Generation system is not backward compatible with the 1st generation contact sensors. Since to upgrade I would have been required to buy a whole new system, I decided to try Ring. I have not been disappointed in the least. 5. Ring offers far more options in terms of indoor/outdoor cameras than Simplisafe. Since this is a wireless system you do need to be considerate of the distance from an access point and whether range extenders are required. This reviewer gave the nod to Simplisafe in a couple of areas based on other reviews, which can't be considered reliable Those recommendations would carry a lot more weight if they were based on personal experience. Simplisafe is a decent system that I would likely have stayed with had I not been required to purchase a whole new system when I decided to upgrade, but I am so happy that they did. Ring offers a greater degree of flexibility in its implementation. Ring offers Neighbors app, which is intended to serve as a social media type Neighborhood watch where the user can post suspicious/criminal activity. You do not need to be a Ring subscriber and it is free. In theory, this app is an amazing concept. In practice, I think too many users see suspicious activity where there is none. If Ring established guidelines and moderated the post it would be phenomenal. The Neighbors app aside, for my money Ring, is a far superior offering.

vlthompson3 : well I prefer to mount the sensor on the panel instead of the window b/c when you shut the window hard it’s bad for the sensors with the components and battery, also it weighs more too. It might post a problem in the long run. So mounting the magnet on the actual window is the best.

Jack Sparrow this is such a idiotic comment. So you saying ring aka amazon sells information to google which is always at beef with amazon. Two companies who compete in everything and one of them still sells information to the other? 😂 look I am not disagreeing with everything but knowing amazon they would rather keep the information they collecting and use it to target more amazon products to you instead of giving it to the others..
@JackSparrow-fl3zw
@JackSparrow-fl3zw 4 жыл бұрын
nik maknojia Before you call someone’s comment “idiotic,” there are a couple of things in your comment that shows that you are not well-informed. First of all, they aren’t always at beef with each other. Sure they compete in certain niches in technology and services, but overall they help each other hand-in-hand, especially in marketing. In marketing, you need data, data can either be farmed with your own products/services or be bought by other businesses that do the same or are similar. After all, they are a for-profit business whose goal is to make more money which can be done by targeting people with products that they are interested in with the data they have. They may not be the best of friends, but they still make business deals that can make each other profitable. Secondly, the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that 5 companies were identified in receiving information: Facebook (user's time zone, device model and screen resolution and a unique identifier), Branch (unique identifiers, as well as each user's IP address, device model and screen resolution), AppsFlyer (a range of information, including sensor data related to the magnetometer, gyroscope and accelerometer on users' phones), MixPanel (users' full names, email addresses, device information and app settings), and Google’s Crashalytics (a variety of information, when users use the apps, online reviews) without user’s consent. Thirdly, don’t assume that you know what amazon or google is doing cuz you ain’t the one controlling it. Just state the facts instead of your opinion cuz someone’s gonna one-up you. (Note: don’t even think about mentioning the time they were blocking each other’s services from each other’s products cuz that’s already resolved.)

We had SS for years and were never happy with it. Unless you pay 25 a month, which is really expensive, setting up the system is a huge pain. We got ring last year and are never looking back. Ring is very simple and is 3x less expensive for better service. The only complains I have is they charge extra for a yard sign and a extra stickers but that’s easy to deal with considering how much cheaper it is. I also like that rings new products are backward compatible while with SS, if you wanted new devices you’d have to start over.

I am thinking of ditching simplisafe for Ring. Main reasons are: 1) I am paying $15 and as far as I know the app feature to disable or enable is not available for $15. Ring sells for $100 per year which is obviously cheaper 2) My old simplisfafe system needs to be updated anyway since it's old. In so many years, after collecting extra $80 over the competition, Simlisafe should have offered me a complimentary upgrade of the system. They are no longer just competing with ADP. Their main income from me is the monthly payments.

I’ve had both and I prefer simply safe. Ring has been bought out and unfortunately it’s just not as good as it was before. It’s also not as good as SimpliSafe. I’ve had SimpliSafe for about five years now with the top-tier monitoring. I’m very happy with it. The integration between the cameras sensors etc. is seamless and customer support is top notch. Also SimpliSafe has excellent monitoring. Also, you do not have to pay anything for SimpliSafe if you want to use it as a non-monitored/local alarm. You can choose two different levels of monitoring service for $13/$24 or you can pay nothing and just use it as a local alarm. SimpliSafe is the way to go, in my experience with both.

My comments: I actually ordered a SimpliSafe kit which came to around $450 but returned it unopened as I changed my mind and got Ring. Setup is done; need to put up more door and window sensors. Waiting for some "Slim Magnets" to come. I should have known I needed those as ADT had used them when they installed 8 years ago. I cannot complete installation without Slim Magnets because of the way some of our doors are built. SimpliSafe uses VERIZON whereas Ring uses AT&T. The signal with AT&T is only one bar at best at my home, and indeed on my app and online it shows just one red bar. But when I called customer service, they said not to worry, as in the event of a breakin when our power and WiFi are down, one bar even if showing in red, is adequate to send a signal by cellular. The Ring base station can run 24 hours on its own battery. One other thing: Costco currently has the Ring Doorbell to purchase for $189, and that includes the one year of Plus monitoring for the doorbell and the security system! Nice! Costco only has the 10 piece system in the warehouse so I had to order 2 more motion detectors, 6 Slim Magnets, and likely I'll need 4 more contact sensors for doors/windows and oh, will need the smoke alarm "listener" sensor which relies on the scream from our existing smoke detectors. (I think).

wrong... if you look over the products and read Security Baron's written review, you'd see Simplisafe includes more products e.g. keyfobs, siren, and panic button which Ring does not. Simplisafe also has the video cam now and allows self monitoring so I'd say in terms of hardware, SImplisafe > Ring. I'm still debating on the subscription plan as to which would be better for 24/7 monitoring. The nice thing about Ring though is they have the outdoor cams, but they're ridiculously expensive which I feel you could get a much better deal just buying wired security cameras separately, save recordings on a hard drive, and use for self monitoring

Quick question ... my ADT charges me extra for the communication that goes along with the monitoring (basically a separate cell signal). Do the monitoring costs for Ring and Simplisafe already take this into account? Seems like they would since they talk about no need for a landline, but I would like to be sure that when we talk about monitoring for $30/year or $15/month ... that that really is the cost. Thanks,

This is such a bias review toward SimpliSafe. The points you are making against Ring and points for SimpliSafe are way off in my opinion. The Ring door/window contact components can easily be reversed and mounted either way. The only plus you are making for SimpliSafe is a possibly faster installation of maybe 10 minutes. Yet on Ring the hardware product is much less expensive, is compatible with so many more home security products which you don't even mention like locks, outdoor security light/cam, ability to integrate with home automation hubs, etc, monthly professional monitoring is optional for Ring not so with SimpliSafe but even so, it takes $10 per month for Ring vs $25 (to get an equivalent feature to Ring app) so the total cost of ownership with SimpliSafe is incredibly more expensive than Ring. Sorry if this is coming off a little harsh but I don't like it when an influencer that is perceived to be fair really isn't. You have lost credibility.

I am looking into these two exact systems and one thing I noticed is that you do not need monitoring with simplisafe. Their system will work without monitoring for self monitoring. From their site "We strongly recommend a monitoring plan. Without a plan, your system will still function as a siren, but we won't be able to dispatch police or call you to alert you to a break-in at home."

As someone who bought a SimpliSafe system, dropped ~$500 for it, and then returned it for a full refund, you do need monitoring. Without it, you literally can't do anything with the system. It doesn't even give you app notifications on your phone. It's completely useless. To further annoy you, there are features of different monitoring devices that cannot be accessed without the subscription. People on their forums say stuff like, "you can just buy one month, modify the settings of the devices, and then cancel it." I don't mind not having someone call me when my alarm goes off but to not even get notifications, via the app, if the alarm is going off is absolutely ridiculous. So yes, you don't NEED the monitoring plan but without it you have to be at home to know there was ever an event. Trust me, if you're on the fence with both, go with Ring. It's amazing and my wife and I have been loving it for the last few months!

Hi, Dave! I discovered your channel and really appreciate your in-depth and well-produced videos. We had a break-in at our remote farm in Maine and now (closing the barn door after the horse is gone) we are looking for a security system. I like the Simplisafe overall. But, a few questions that seem to arise on all of these systems: 1. Do you get some kind of alert on your alarm panel or cellphone that one of the sensors needs to have its battery replaced? 2. Can you set up sensors to beep/send an alert, even if the system is in Home mode (or off). So, for example, a door that is rarely opened or back windows that are out of sight - if those open up during the day, an alert/alarm is sent? Meanwhile, the usual doors and window sensors stay quiet for normal daytime use? I guess that would be a "settings per sensor" adjustment? 3. Are panic buttons "always on/available?" I would think they would be. 4. Are there integrations with Alexa for IFTTT or something that might trigger all the lights to be turned on? Most of our lights are Alexa controlled. I also just ordered the Eufy video camera system which looks similar to Arlo version. I also have an older IP camera. I wish there were a software that would be "one stop shopping" for these various cameras. One portal that could host all cameras. But, probably, for the hassle involved, I could just retire the old IP camera. I guess the outside sirens are battery operated? Our farm is way out in the country and the neighbor is about a city-block distance away. I appreciate all the help! Great videos and very professional! Thanks!

Hi Charles! It's actually Gabe. Happy to answer your questions. 1. Yes, you will be alerted on your alarm panel and phone if one of your sensors has low battery. 2. Yes, on Home Mode all of the sensors are armed except the motion sensors, so you can still be alerted from your entry or glass break sensors. 3. Panic buttons are always on/ available regardless if the system is armed or not. 4. Yes, SimpliSafe has integrations with Nest Thermostats and August smart locks. Unfortunately it doesn't work with any smart light bulbs, but it does work with Alexa for voice commands. I also wish there was one portal to host all cameras! @@SecurityDotOrg Hi, Gabe! Sorry, I just got your reply. I appreciate the information. The setup for Simplisafe looks good and I like all aspects of it except for the lack of zones. For example, we have doors/windows that are rarely opened and should be armed at all times except when the alarm is completely OFF. On the other hand, we have doors that are in use during the day that should only be armed when AWAY. Then, of course, there are glass breakage detectors that, IMHO, should be armed all the time, too, because they are in remote areas of the house. I like the fob idea and the sirens and all that, but I think zones are needed. I also did not see a strobe light or external relay type of device. This is for a farm in Maine and the distances between houses are significant so noise and lights are a big deal. We installed Eufy cameras and they works well! I did see another service, Deep Sentinel (www.deepsentinel.com/) which shows some promise for a particularly sensitive/high value area of our property. I will look into that. Do you have any recommendations for a wireless alarm that includes zones? Thanks for the great videos! I've watched several and told friends about them, as well. Hi again Charles, SimpliSafe does allow you to arm some sensors and not others. You'll just need to customize your components using the SimpliSafe Easy Setup Wizard. Here are some instructions from SimpliSafe: simplisafe.com/help-center/result/can-i-customize-my-system-so-certain-sensors-are-enabled-or-disabled You are right that SimpliSafe lacks a strobe light. However, they do have an 105 decibel siren available. I haven't actually reviewed the Deep Sentinel system yet so I can't really comment, but glad you're liking your eufy cameras! If I were you, I'd do SimpliSafe even though there's no strobe light. SimpliSafe works with Alexa so I'd get a camera with a strobe light that does too. For someone who wanted to use outside of US, what do you recommend? Ring allows self-monitoring without requiring monthly subscribing. Does this make Ring is the only option for those who would like to use it outside of the country. Also someone who lives in a country where they use 220/240 VAC, 50Hz. Thank you very much in advance.

We currently have Comcast security. Moving and they do not service our new home (have to pay them to cancel). These are the two systems I'm looking at. Torn. Equipment price wise right now, they're about the same (SS having sale plus free camera). Monitoring price is obviously different. I want to be able to use my phone. The free camera is a plus. These seem very very similar. Need help. SS tend to get better reviews and rankings in "top security system" reviews. Having cellular is also a must. We're moving somewhere where our internet could be suspect. Help!

30 second delay is only for entry motion detector or entry door( this entry time is actually customized up to 3 min. and can be set differently for entry and exit.) You can customize which doors and motion detectors you want as entry. All windows, secondary doors and secondary motion detectors will alarm immediately when triggered. Response time from alarm trigger from monitoring site is around 30 seconds which is pretty standard from what i read to give you time to disarm if false alarm. I have done this a few times letting dogs out in morning lol.

Hi. Thank you for this review. Ive never had a system so even all your great, easy explanations has me a little confused. I can't seem to figure out who has what i really want. On top of things here with these 2 companies, i REALLY want a couple outdoor cameras. It seems to me that it would be really smart to be alerted to and see some things BEFORE they happen. An indoor camera i don't really know what id need it for, unles wanting yo watch a sitter with children, but i want to see whose creeping around most! And not just who rings my doorbell. Any thoughts for me? Is there something out there for me? I love both of these you reviewed but i want more! Lol. Thank you!

Interesting that you noted that the Ring Alarm does not come pre-programmed , I’ve had my system for over a year now and the kit that I bought had every single sensor programmed to the base station. All I had to do was pull the tab and it was already paired to the alarm system. Did they change something recently?

The Ring system does not take an hour to set up. The base may take a lot of trouble shooting and ring support to get connected to WiFi. An Hour on the phone... The devices can take a few hours to sync with the base unit. I’ve been waiting for 6 hours now. Which I heard does happen. Then, while you wait for the devices to sync you cannot get any live feed from the camera or try to back space out if the app. It’s locked up while you wait for a few hours...

Most company's have free integration with Amazon, Google or the apple nerds as well as free mobile apps. I would rate them 5 stars but because of the extortion fee (24/7 home monitoring is a scam to get your $$$) I give it 3.

Simplisafe, like all other alarm systems aren't foolproof when it comes to false alarms. I have one personally, we had our keypad replaced since it "thought" the panic button was being pressed, which means the cops are dispatched. @@SecurityDotOrg I just read your review noted here, revised August 2020. You indicated the Simplisafe tier 3 monitoring fee is $ 14.99/month. Other research indicates the fee is now $24.99. Did they increase the fee by 66% since August?

I'm a homeowner and currently use SimpliSafe. I want to add comments to your video based on my experience that may offer more clarification not covered in your video. 1. Installation of SimpliSafe and Ring are equally easy, however, one doesn't use the SimpliSafe app to install and activate the sensors. You use the keypad to activate the sensors and it is very clunky and feels rather 1990's for a modern installation experience. Four doors, three motion sensors, two keypads and base station took about 45-60 minutes to install. Not bad and was easy but could have been a better, more confident experience with an app. 2. With SimpliSafe, you don't get to use the app at all unless you're paying for the interactive monitoring package at $25 ($24.99). The less expensive $15 ($14.99) doesn't give you the ability to use the app to arm and disarm the security system or check history of door and motion sensors, etc. 3. The door chime for when doors are opened an closed (can be disabled but I like knowing when doors are opened and also closed) when the alarm is disarmed only chimes once for when a door is opened. When a door is closed you don't get an additional chime which is a setback from other security systems. I've used three other security systems and they all give you confirmation chimes for when doors are also closed - it is a nice feature and I feel it is important, especially if you have children. 4. The keypads do not chime when the doors are opened. Only the base station chimes. Again, I've used three other security systems and the base station and keypads all chime. This is a setback if you have a larger home and especially if the base station is not centrally located in your home. 5. SimpliSafe and Ring cameras need to be plugged in for power to the cameras. I'm surprised (and disappointed) that Ring cameras are not wireless yet like Netgear Arlo cameras. I don't mention disappointment with a lack of wireless for SimpliSafe cameras only because they're strictly a traditional home security system and never started out with doorbells and security cameras before moving into home security monitoring. Maybe SimpliSafe should partner with Netgear Arlo so homeowners can link the cameras to their SimpliSafe home security system. Great video and thank you for doing these reviews!

@@aprildonahoo8650 Because Amazon has a history of sending video footage to police without permission or notification of the homeowner, I would not use Ring products in my home at all. I also would not use SimpliSafe cameras. I use SimpliSafe for security and Arlo cameras as a separate video surveillance.

Simplisafe isn't exactly self .monitored, unlike ring it wont let you access any features in the app to know when somethings up, so when your away from the home its useless without monitoring plans.

@@SecurityDotOrg but even a local alarm system could be a deterrent for burglaries as opposed to having a video monitoring system, yes, you see what's happening and are notified of it, may not do anything against the burglaries if they are not aware of it or don't see it as an issue. Compare this with a siren that can go off and get attention from neighbors. That's pretty much what guard dogs are. They make noise and deter people from entering or try to keep them out.

Gabe I have been reading tons of reviews as current as November 2019 and according to them they have all said simplisafe customer service is the worst as far as waiting times and returning equipment and trying to cancel service. So how in gods name do you go to simplisafe for customer support. Please explain unless your getting something from simplisafe lol. What’s up with that

Hi Steve, Valid criticism! I would say SimpliSafe's system is of higher quality than Ring's, the hardware I bought cost around the same price- $547 for Ring and $559 for SimpliSafe (although SimpliSafe didn't include their video doorbell, which costs $199, so SimpliSafe is more expensive). @sykmail1120

Hi Vicki. That is mostly because the users who got hacked did not set up 2 way authentication, which would've alerted the Ring owners that someone was trying to access their cameras and prevented the hackers from gaining access.

@Vicki Mori You could also do more research on how to further secure not only your ring or SimpliSafe security system but your wireless router that they connect to. Like ensuring your wireless router is secured with a WPA password and if somebody was to work their way in your network are you’re router password settings changed from the default? All things you could do to further secure your network and security system. Studying cyber security one of the basics is that not a single network or computer is ever completely secure. That’s just a chance you take when using network based security systems.

I have been watching Simpli safe and yes I noticed many complaints especially on there site by customers who were frustrated. And yet I am so drawn to take a chance as they seem to be striving to address customer complaints. As for Ring well I just read that people are complaining about the camera/app shutting down or super slow, or not responding. Sadly with so many fake reviews many by the companies competing with reviews instead of good demonstrations as you are providing its always doubt in a consumers mind. One thing I did not hear you mention in regards to Ring on Amazon is that after adding Ring to my cart it said echo was needed. So is that if you buy the security monitoring service or if you want to use Alexa. And is Echo Dot necessary for self monitoring. Also Deep Sentinel keeps popping up have you did a review on that home security system? Woo that was a mouthful so if you reply thank you for reading and patience. Happy Holiday may we all be safe with or without a security system.

Hi, what are your thoughts on the claims that SimpliSafe can be easily hacked?
@vlthompson3
@vlthompson3 4 жыл бұрын
You need to consider that in the internet of things there is no such thing as 100-percent failsafe. What is the likelihood that someone wants what you have so badly that they're willing to put in the work required to hack your system just to gain access to your home? If the chances are that high these are not the systems for you. You should consider a professionally installed closed-circuit system, which can't be hacked, at least not without clear physical evidence and an obvious interruption in service.
