They can be realy picky on which farriers they like, it takes a lot of expertise in horse handling for the farrier too to keep the horse comfortable and cooperative.

Quick question, do horses enjoy getting the hooves done. I know it doesn't hurt them but do they like it or is it just something they put up with
@lynnehuff9659 Жыл бұрын
They appear to put up with it. They are trained (preferably at a young age)to have their feet handled. It is an important part of training.
@lizzieburgess674 Жыл бұрын
As Lynn Huff says, they are trained to tolerate it. Most of them do, with varying degrees of patience or impatience. Some of them will doze off as its being done, and some get irritated by it. Elderly horses will often need extra consideration - rests between each foot, or pair of feet, and young ones often need a lot of patience and forbearance. Although a lot depends on the skill and attitude of the farrier and the trainer/owner, it is also individual thing to each horse.

The black putty you laid in alongside the frog is just to keep dirt, debris from packing in under the pad?
@Serenity_yt Жыл бұрын
I think so and to make sure the frog also gets used so it doesnt build back or causes other issues (another yt farrier explained it like that as far as I remember)
@kenbrundage55282 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining what ringbone is, which many farriery KZbins neglect. Save for the new acrylics, your methods go back to the early 20th century. See, for instance, Charles Holmes' British textbook. As I am sure you know, since deformity dictates how the foot must land, the ware pattern of the old shoe could have been fashioned into the new.

Can I ask why you hand forge shoes instead of altering prefab shoes? It seems like this shoe would have been easier to make from a steel stock shoe?
@kayawinchell1822 жыл бұрын
Also, can I ask how much you charged the client for this? Does this cost more than the average shoeing? Doing great work for this horse but I've only seen this amount of custom work and time spent per horse at a medical center like Rood&Riddle.

Just curious. Do wild horses hoofs get long where they can’t run?
@lizzieburgess674 Жыл бұрын
Wild and feral horses hooves get naturally worn away to a suitable height and shape by constant movement over different types of terrain. This is very different to domestic horses who are restricted in where they can go and what they can do.

@heatherb26802 жыл бұрын
Love the videos! I have a question: If a horse has a shoe on one foot to help with a problem (like the ringbone in this video), do the other feet need shoeing too to balance everything out?
@elizabeths11172 жыл бұрын
Yep. The other front (or hind) should be shod as well. A horse is fine with just front shoes. I’ve seen horses with only rear shoes. It’s strange.
@KateandBree2 жыл бұрын
At least on the other front front. As long as the backs are fine, the back feet will be kept bare and slightly longer to balance everything out.
@BabalonNuit Жыл бұрын
@@elizabeths1117 I would assume horses with back feet shod are horses who do work like pulling ploughs (yes, people still use horses for that; I see them around here where we have a lot of Mennonites.

Looks like a good job . But why not just make a graduated shoe with a rocker toe ? I have found that pads only ever serve to create an environment non conducive to the long term health and sometimes short term health of the hoof . I have always noticed that hoof growth is poor between showings with pads . Not saying they don’t have their uses but personally I use all other methods before pads .
@EverLearningDragon2 жыл бұрын
That scraping and trimming looks like it should be painful but clearly isn’t. What sort of precautions do you take to avoid injuring the horse? Or is that even a real concern here?
@lynnehuff9659 Жыл бұрын
Yes every precaution is taken so there are no injuries. The farriers study hoof anatomy. They know exactly where to trim to achieve the desired results. Shaping the hoof, in all of it's aspects determines how the foot hits the ground. That will affect how he travels.
