I volunteer for a local farm animal rescue/sanctuary. A little more than a year ago, we took in an older pony from an auction about this size who had been severely neglected and had hooves curled up just like this. It has taken pretty much this whole year of regular corrective hoof trimming with a very knowledgeable farrier for his feet and body to more or less recover, and he still may never be perfect. After all, when their hooves are angled like that, especially for so long, it messes up their muscles, tendons, joints, etc., and they can be quite sore for a while - they have to essentially re-learn how to walk correctly. He kind of shuffled around at first, but he is doing much better now. Thank you for doing such a wonderful job with these ponies, and I'd be curious to see the progress they make. Hopefully they make a full recovery and are cared for properly the rest of their lives. It's so sad to see this kind of thing happen when it's preventable.

In many ways you are fortunate. At least these ponies were tame. I adopted an abandoned, abused pony about 3 years ago. It took more than two of those for me to get her to trust me enough to be able to catch her, much less work on her feet. Even a trip to the vet for sedation failed to stop her from kicking. Getting her used to being handled and having her feet worked on took a lot of effort but, with a lot of patience and commitment, I'm happy to say that things eventually worked out and I now have a fairly trusting, healthy pony with 4 good feet.

@lakeireland

Also because ponies aren’t always sweet. **Some** (not all) can be extremely temperamental and stubborn when they want to be. Same with miniature horses. People buy them because they’re adorable only to find out they own a little terror and are afraid of it. Still, that’s no excuse for letting their feet get that bad. Sedatives were developed for a reason.
@TheAkwarium

@@lakeireland also people should do reasearch before getting an animal because it looks "cute". @Linda Arbogast Horse person here--they probably brought in a vet to give them a light tranquilizer before they laid them down. The ponies are probably around 36" tall and weigh around 350 lbs, so two guys could lay them down. I had a Shetland and practically had to get on my knees to trim my pony. I couldn't get a farrier out to come out for one pony so I had to learn to trim him myself. It is a sin to let them get that long!!!! 🤨

You need to understand where an animal originates from to care for it. The Shetland pony is a native breed of Isle of Shetland in Scotland. These ponies grow up in a harsh place. They have bushes and shrubs to eat move all the day over rocks and hard surfaces and in the winter months will grow and very thick coat as they lived in a very cold winds. My aunt would never allow her pony to graze on the lush green field in spring time but feed him all the hay he wanted from second cut. You have to make sure they see a farrier (Blacksmith) every 6 months for a trim. I think people buy them as a children's pony, which is okay, but they can have attitude so needs to be placed with an adult that has a horse back ground training. They need to see the vet annually to have their vaccines. PS these little gems were lightly sedated by a qualified vet to have their overgrown hooves done. God love the blacksmith ~ real back breaking job. 🙂

Aw, they must be so happy when you have sorted out those neglected hooves. I wonder if they need a little pain relief/anti inflammatory for a few days while things settle down? A neighbour has a Shetland pony, sometimes her toddler rides it but she has a tiny pony trap for it to pull, trotting around the lanes, so it needs shoes. I saw the blacksmith shoeing it, poor guy was bent double as the pony was so low down, he said he custom makes the shoes as no commercial manufacturer makes them so small.
