It’s interesting that the reviewers are no longer focusing on deviations from the source material. The show is so, so, so, far off that it’s not even worthwhile mentioning that. (In this example the 3 Elven rings were never sullied by Sauron. They were never a corrupting influence. The elves made them to help them focus their energies on preserving their realms in Middle Earth) Now the critics have moved on to just evaluating the show on a standalone basis and it is still total crap! Theee guys are trying to write original fantasy set in Tolkien’s universe and are learning very rapidly, much to our collective misery, that fantasy writing is a serious genre and is hard.
@adam-k14 күн бұрын
The issue never was that the show deviates from the source material. Let's face it unless you are a Tolkien nerd you don't know or care about the source material. The issue is and always was that the writing, directing and acting (along with casting, costumes) in this show is shit. And not a firm healthy log but a yellowish frothing liquid kind of shit.

written by an AI. Title: Shadows of Doubt Setting: A quiet glade in Rivendell, twilight casting long shadows among the trees. Galadriel stands with her arms crossed, a fierce glint in her eye. Elrond approaches, his brow furrowed with concern. ELROND: (calmly) Galadriel, you must let go of these fears. Sauron is gone. The age of darkness has passed. GALADRIEL: (intensely) You do not understand, Elrond. I have seen the shadows he casts, even in the light of day. ELROND: (firmly) What you saw was the past. We have endured countless trials. We cannot be haunted by what was. GALADRIEL: (stepping closer) You think I speak of the past? I speak of the present! His malice still lingers. I have felt it stirring in the depths. ELROND: (sighing) You are burdened by your visions. They cloud your judgment. GALADRIEL: (voice rising) My judgment is clearer than yours! I have witnessed the whispers of his return, the darkness gathering beyond the horizon. ELROND: (pained) You risk your sanity by chasing shadows. GALADRIEL: (passionately) And you risk our very lives by dismissing them! I know what I have seen, Elrond. We must prepare, or we shall fall. (A heavy silence settles between them, the weight of their opposing beliefs palpable.)

They present Sauron as a sympathetic "bad boy" character from "Twilight" that is wavering between good and evil (and might have PTSD) whereas, by this time in the saga, he is irredeemably and happily evil. The model for Sauron should be a master villain, manipulating others like chess pieces from behind the scenes, like Francis Urquhart from the British version of 'House of Cards', or Emperor Palpatine from the Prequels or Tywin Lannister from 'Game of Thrones'. If you wanted to do a conflicted Sauron, you would have to go way back to his corruption by Morgoth, or do Morgoth himself (why not?) which could have been a Twilight of the Gods or even a 'Clash of The Titans' kind of thing. Adar is superfluous, but if you must have him, he could have been trying to subvert Sauron to gain power himself as a side plot (like GoT), but he would not be able to outwit the master manipulator.

You're a stronger man than I, about fifteen minutes into episode one of session two and I was done. I slogged through season one, I can't do it again. I was, however, amazed at how in such a short time they managed to reinforce in my mind the worst flaws of the writing from the first season. The entire Adar/Sauron struggle session, How does it advance the plot? It doesn't. Wasted screen time, we already know that Adar thought he killed Sauron and seeing it added nothing. The energy burst when Sauron "died" was dumb, obviously a memberberry to the similar burst when Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand. But that burst only occurred because Isildur severed the part of Sauron's anima in the Ring from that which was in his corporeal form. He hadn't dealt a mortal blow to Sauron in any way and the death of his physical form was caused by the resulting burst, it didn't create it. Then we have several minutes of Sauron regaining his corporeal form. Why? I don't know. Sauron regaining his power after the encounter with Isildur had nothing to do with creating a physical form, it was about the part of his anima that was dispersed by the energy burst when the Ring was cut from his hand coalescing over time. I guess they thought it would look neat to do it visually and these days with CGI it's easy to just think something up and send it off to an animation studio along with a wheelbarrow full of cash without really thinking about whether it adds anything meaningful to the production. Sauron regaining his power in the PJ films was accomplished with a few lines here and there about darkness in the east and goblins with the occasional visual of dark clouds underlit with flames and/or lightning. Those mere few seconds accomplished everything that the many minutes and hundreds of thousands of dollars of effects (if not millions) did, and how it occurred was filled in by the imaginations of each individual watching. You cannot visually show the essence of what Sauron's resurgence entails, having its seriousness and horror depicted via the reaction of others is far more effective. The lack of understanding of the latter by the writers and show runners of ROP is its greatest downfall. That sequence then led to the rehash of the absolutely ridiculous ocean/raft sequence from season one. Did we need to see Sauron steal the sigil from the old man? Did we need to see Sauron treated with kindness only to turn on those who helped him? Did we need to see the sea monster refuse to attack him? This view of that event from a slightly different perspective added nothing to what we know of Sauron. We know he's fundamentally evil, we know he's duplicitous, we know he's self serving, we know that the sigil he was carrying wasn't his. A ton of screen time and very expensive CGI to tell us what we already know, and to remind us of the utter stupidity of Galadriel swimming across the ocean and the unlikeliness of meeting Sauron there. Yep...totally done with this season right there. I can't do it to myself again.

These metaphors are exactly what you would expect someone who has never actually read Tolkien to think Tolkien wrote like. He really didn't use metaphors in his characters' speech much, and when he did it was much more relatable, drawing us into the world through our ability to imagine actually experiencing the metaphor ("like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow"). The Rings of Power does the opposite, pushing us away by the alien nature of the metaphor.

At the end of Peter Jackson’s last Hobbit movie, accompanying the credits, the audience was treated to a gallery of gorgeous sketches of landscapes, architecture, characters and costumes. These included design drawings of the ring, exquisitely rendered, Elven inscriptions and all, faithful to Tolkien’s description of this awesome yet far from ornate object at the center of an epic tale. By contrast, Amazon brings us Elven “rings of power” which look like they emerged from a plastic egg that came out of a gumball machine. Perhaps they were ordered from a cosplay accessory vender on Amazon. The word “cheesy” barely scratches the surface. First, Halibrand has to inform the Elve’s master metal-smith that metals can be alloyed, something he has obviously never heard of. Then Dumblebimbobor , needing only the very finest Elven gold and silver to mix with his irreplaceable mithril sample, smelts Galadriel’s brother’s knife, and the steel blade melts at the same temperature as the precious metals of the handle for some reason. We now have to assume that the finest Elven blades were made from inferior brittle carbon steel (which still melts at a higher temperature than soft metals), while the swords of the men from the Southland have been alloyed with nickel as Halibrand mentioned, so as to make them tough and hold an edge when tempered. Clearly the men from the Southland were superior metallurgists to the primitive, less sophisticated Elves. Who knew(?), surely not Tolkien. The mithril, so touchy and unstable that a tiny sliver of it has already blown up the furnace once, is carefully added to the melt by pulling the lump of unrefined ore out of a pouch and tossing it in the crucible, no drying or preheating, cur-plunk, with no ill effect. The pour is not carried to the mold to keep it as hot and liquid as possible, but flows down a split stream along long, curving troughs for some reason. We see the tongs of the craftsman twisting silver wires to form one of the rings, a process which has little to do with smelting as wires are drawn, not cast. Not too surprising then that the silver wire ring is a different color than the two super-bowl rings, as it is obviously made from a different (non-magical) alloy. Although the chunky zircon on top does have a certain Disney princess “charm” all its own. Critics have pointed out that the Amazon writers don't have copyrights to Gandalf, Hobbits, etc. Hence the nameless "not Gandalf" wizard and proto-hobbit “club-foots” or what have you. I'm guessing the ring designs are also copyrighted. I'm glad those guys from Jackson’s crew are still working and I wonder if they are cringing like much of the audience is.

There is one bit I like: fragments of the Bulgarian National Radio Choir being thrown in to random scenes - deserts, forests, bad guys / misunderstood guys, arrivals, departures, portentous but limp moments etc. Close harmony in minor 2nds, guaranteed to bring drama to any scene. If done well. Or teeth-grinding torment.

You are brilliant. Seriosly dude, thanks this is great s*** from the writing to the editing and everything in between!

There are only 2 elves in the legendarium that have beards. They had literally no reason to shave Cirdan and take away his ine main distinguishing feature other than spite. Spite regarding Disa. ‘You care about beards?’ - shaves the only bearded character to appear in their show. Absolute spite.
@dinmavric550414 күн бұрын
That's very petty. At least they had the balls to show an Elf with a beard, everyone that shouldn't have beards in the PJ movies has one. Find something else to criticize, there is plenty.

I couldn't remember how season 1 ended exactly. I couldn't remember if Galadriel and Elrond had reasons to be sure about their positions on the rings. Galadriel going straight to where Elrond had hidden was horrible plotting. AND THE DIALOG WAS PUNISHING! You'd assume that maybe in middle earth, they'd have a variant of killing two birds with one stone. They'd have idiomatic speech, but it's all so verbose. Day to day communication should be for efficiency. "Killing two birds with one stone" is short compared to explaining the idea and adds meaning. And the cross cutting is idiotic. Cross cutting implies that everything is happening simultaneously. It adds to the sense of plot being inorganic by corroding the sense of time and distance. Wandering the wilderness with Gandalf feels more epic if it takes months. But it's I guess happening concurrently with things that feel like they should be a few days.

And Sauron is not black goo like venom, he is evil demi god that can rule middle earth like his old master morgoth.
@inczekrisztian264814 күн бұрын
The Three were made last, in secret, by Celebrimbor alone, when Sauron already left to forge the One. Also, they were the culmination of more than a hundred years of knowledge and practice. They were not marred by Sauron directly, because he wasn't there by that point, but his knowledge was what they used to make them, that is why the One still had an effect on them. Still, they were not a corrupting influence. Soooo, basically the complete opposite of what they did in the show. As with many other important things...
@yurikendal486814 күн бұрын
Not entirely free. They were made in a way that connected them to the one ring or at least powered by it. Elrond could not have known that at this point

Even though I have never seen a single episode of any season of whatever this show is trying to be about, after hearing all the negative press around it I think I know what might bring its ratings up: a sudden alien invasion complete with space crafts, energy and particle weapons, oh yeah and explosions and random portals that dinosaurs come out of.

I like Constable paintings when I'm in my cups. I would compare this to the productions of someone even more commercial but much better at his craft: Maxfield Parrish. Love old Max, especially that Lantern image. 'Daybreak' is one of the most popular prints in the U.S. But too much and it's like eating the whole box of chocolates in one go. It's the meat and potatoes and salad if you must that sustain.

I’ve never watched an episode- I truly hate how they have all the making of the Rings not in order. The three Elven rings were made AFTER the 16 rings- 9 for mortal men, and 7 for the Dwarf Lords. Celibrimbor made the three elven rings LAST, without Sauron mucking them up. I believe he died after this. The Elven Rings were meant to protect the realm of Middle Earth, and in fear of Sauron gaining control over them, they were hidden away. All of this show is a garbled mess. They had LITERALLY whole books and resource material to use to make a great show- and they decided to go with DEI hires and cosplay LoTR. *facepalm

Echo Chamberlain: "You have not seen what I have seen." Me: Yeah, I bailed on episode one and watched the real Lord of the Rings. ;) Jokes aside, thank you Echo for watching this trite. It's amazing to think we live in a world where we are getting Star Wars and LOTRs and yet both of them suck. And while the droves of consoomers(folks who unquestioningly consume as fans) will berate channels like you, it just sucks to see this stuff done poorly. I am a sucker for epic fantasy and would love to see it realized in a TV series that's good that isn't Game of Thrones. But nope; these showrunners and writers don't care. They see LOTRs as a platform to do whatever they want and deride anyone who voices an iota of criticism towards them. It's why I've been rewatching a lot of good stuff like Hercules, Xena, Beastmaster tv series etc. alongside stuff like yours. All in all, keep up the amazing work. Don't let the haters get to you.

@@chasehedges6775The worst series in the 90s is better than what we are getting.
