In this video I explain the ins and outs of my Mobile Flip-Top Workbench and what makes it so unique. Unfortunately, I built this three years ago and did not record a build video along the way. I did take a lot of pictures, so I use them throughout the video to explain what I did, along with some current video and even some 3D Renders to better explain the inside parts that you are unable to see from the outside. So, if you have a small workspace and are looking to save a ton of space, this may be the bench for you!
I now realize I spelled "Rosin Paper" wrong as well, but it's too late at this point.

I like the finished edges on the doors and drawer fronts. You're a woodworker so you have to practice your craft. Also, it's not uncommon in this work to demonstrate the skills of your craft in even the most utilitarian of builds. Remember, a hundred years from now someone is going to get possession of this thing and, if it's the right person, they will ponder the history of it's use made evident by it's scars of ages ago, and they will also admire it for the passion they can see was put into it by it's maker.

Hi... First of all, don't apologize for not having filmed the build. I've built several things that I should have documented better and as I didn't I'm not "you-tubing" yet... I love the design, the graphics a brilliant (I assume a lot of effort went into creating those. I main modification I would make would be to recess the planer so that the outfeed table can be used there too. Also if you put a small chamfer around the edges of the tool sections that'll stop material getting caught using the outfeed table (Check out Woodwork Junkie's table). I'm going to give this a go (I need to upgrade the one I built from Woodwork Junkies). I hooked and subscribed. Keep up the great content
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, I like that chanfer idea for sure. Recessing the planet got tricky with making sure it was flat on top when it was down and the fliptop still functioning the same. I guess it would work if you made the pivot point lower and the bottom side much thicker.
@wonderstud
@wonderstud 3 жыл бұрын
@@RingsWorkshop I agree, it would be a very interesting challenge to try to drop the planer so as to get it to match the same height as the rest of the table for the outfeed. Would be super cool challenge to figure out!

I did not know Matt Damon could do all this. I had a similar idea to do something like this but #1 The bottom boards slid all the way out and you had to carry the full weight of the tool to lower it below. This system with the bars is much better, faster, and safer. #2 You actually did it, whereas I'm still dreaming. You made a very well thought out space saving work bench. You are not just smart, but you are also a do'er and got it done. Maybe for your tall cabinet with the shallow depth you could store levels, squares, sacrificial wood, or a metal sheet for welding.

This is an excellent video. I am very impressed with the animation, the descriptions, and how well-spoken you are. In terms of the engineering, I find that you are a lot like me, even after you have put something together, you are continually looking at how it could be better, more refined, and you're almost in the realm of doing it over again, just to find that you have more ideas. I'm also impressed with your choice of power tools. There is nothing wrong with WEN, and in almost every video I see, even when a shop is full of Festool, Shop Fox, and Grizzly, there is always the black and orange of WEN poking around. Cost to performance, you won't find much better, despite the rubbish I hear from YT Cowboys.

Thank you so much! I've been very happy with their tools so far. My only complaint I have is the size, but that has nothing to do with the brand, I chose them that small because of space. Like you said, cost to performance I have been very impressed with.

I did not read all of the comments, so someone may have already suggested this, but, in the storage spaces you could use one for Kreg Jig storage and the other you could use for hand planes or other small tools. As for the electric, it looks like you have some spaces that could contain either a power strip and/or multiple duplex outlets, set below the surface one of two ways. One would be to mount them 3/4" below the top and then cover them with a temporary cover of plywood for when you need a flat top or if you can find the right type, they make flip up outlets. Lastly in the middle(ish) of the bench it looked like you had a square opening (under top) that could possibly be turned into a dust collection port. I did not really see much of the internal spaces, but maybe you have enough room to run some pvc to the lower outside or possibly into the wide open cabinet to house a vacuum.
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the ideas. I could definitely do both of those things, but it doesn’t really help a lot as I have both attachments directly above where the bench is. My hope with power would have been to run the power through the pipes so I would have one master plug and the others were ready to use as soon as they flipped up. There is no way to do that with dust collection though because of the size of the hose. Great ideas though, like the idea for hand planes as well!

G'day mate - there's a dozen different shades of genius in this design. I can't believe it didn't get more airplay. For the power, although it isn't as convenient as having a powered table you could have a pop up power board so you could at least have everything you're using plugged in at the same time. The woodshop junkies channel has a great pop up power board idea which uses gas lift and push-to-open cover. You might be able to slot it into that spare space!

To answer your question at 17:08, drill bit holder. I'm not sure how close that spot is to your drill press , however, you could build a bit holder similar to most router bit holders for your most common used bits. Honestly, that area looks big enough that it might fit all bits that one would use. Regardless, that bench is fabulous and I look forward to building my own.

Ab fab video, you have a wonderful imagination. :) I'm in the process of fitting my workshop from scratch and couldn't see where to put the workbench, now I don't have to I can put it wherever I want for the circumstances. Love the can mechanism for lifting the bench, I wondered how solid locking casters would be now I don't have to. I cut my own trees and am incorporating a planking facility (rough plank the trees to 4" - 6" thick, set aside to dry and then rip into planks) so I am wanting to keep a 20ft run free for this. I can now mount all my power tools under this run and upside down just like in your bench. Thank you for that.

having been a carpenter all my life and now retiring moving more to woodworking for fun. this is the first video of you that i have seen. i am most impressed with the simplistic engineering of your bench. since i am in the middle of making a mobile bench along the same lines i now find myself backing up and redesigning based on your project. again i am most impressed and that's not easy to do.congrat's on a most unique and functional project. i would use the other small space for maintence and adjustment tools dedicated space..

I really like this work bench. I've been thinking about making one and now I am going to make one like this one. As for the trim pieces around the door and drawers, it may have taken a while but in my opinion it makes it looks more professionally made and not just crappy plywood. Good job Thanks for sharing.

an idea for the space you have not filled would me make a series of French cleat trays that can have holes drilled in to hold router bits. you could have a tray for each type of bit, so when you want to use them, pull the one tray off, find the one you need, and stow the rest back in place. French cleats can be done with fairly thin stock, when they are only holding a pound or so of bits.

Yes, some video from the build process would have been nice. Does it matter? No! The animations and 3D pictures are worth a LOT more for us viewers. To watch people saw, drill and sand is nice to some extent, but this gives so much more. I'm currently planning a new workshop and storage space, and so far my best idea have been to go modular, to be able to put the parts I need for the moment together. But this might change my overall plan, or at least include some of the brilliant ideas. Thanks so much for sharing this!
