I visited this arena back in October. I couldn't tell if it was modern or not. They still had projection TV's in the concourse which were probably the original ones they installed when the arena opened. I could actually hear the buzz of the TV while walking around.

I think Arizona will still workout, this rink is just too far away from where most of their fan base lives. The Phoenix metro area is massive and this rink is on the very edge of it on the opposite side of where most people who go to games live. The Suns are renovating their arena in downtown Phoenix right now, and I think the Coyotes would be foolish to not do all they can to make sure that area is accommodating for hockey, and move in with the Suns.
@_TheRinks4 жыл бұрын
I've been told that if they can't figure something out in the downtown (the Suns new facility etc) then they may move eventually. That org has been through so much turmoil that at some point you have to think they'll move to a more lucrative market.

$100 a ticket to see a losing team................. I WONDER WHY THEIR ATTENDANCE IS SO LOW. $100 is a ton of money for a evenings entertainment because its not $100. Most people go with AT LEAST AT LEAST one other person so its $200 for a couple and $400 for a family.. Concessions are equally high so maybe a couple hot dogs and a couple beers plus soft drinks for kids another $100. So a night out at a hockey game cost anywhere from $300-$600???? Its insane.. who would want to afford that for ONE evening out.
@_TheRinks5 жыл бұрын
Agree. I LOVE hockey but I can't afford to take my family of 6 to a game. it would be over $1,000 for a potentially crappy game. Hockey is over prices in many locations.

Bruh well they’ll be a few episodes after this: Top 10, fan voted top 10, comparing rinks by cost, the debate between public/privately funded arenas. Then who knows. Probably just maintain the channel with updates especially with places like New York, Seattle, Ottawa, calgary on the horizon with new rinks. Would obviously love to expand channels to include NFL and MLB stadiums but that would involved a lot of travel and would require sponsorship. Based on the popularity of this channel doubt that will happen. Thought it would catch on but hasn’t happened as quickly as I’d hope. Oh well.

I’m going to be blunt this team should be moved Kansas City Houston Milwaukee Quebec Hamilton Portland anywhere else because Arizona isn’t working. I don’t mean to sound mean but it does frustrate me that those markets don’t have a team but Arizona does
@CJbrinkman6025 жыл бұрын
The team is practically in a Wild Card Spot right now, Sun Belt teams are different than Traditional markets. If you don't have a successful team, people don't show up. That's why Tampa, Nashville, Carolina, Anaheim, and even Pittsburg have struggled in the past with either attendance or financial issues. It doesn't help when your Arena isn't centralized downtown. Hockey works in the desert, you just got to make sure you have a gold product on the Ice.
@Ryguy-lg2xz5 жыл бұрын
CJ yes the pens had financial trouble and low attendance then they picked themselves up and put a winnings team on the ice and fans came back. With the continued success they have the fans will most likely stay. It’s to early to tell if Vegas is viable we’ll de if they sell that arena during there down years. And there arena is on the strip

All very valid points! One topic I'm going to cover in a future episode is how markets vary and IMO work/don't work. Sports franchises are an interesting beast. In terms of Phoenix, I agree maybe instead of expanding the NHL to more teams, moving less successful franchises out to other cities. Obviously the NHL doesn't want to do this because they don't want endless moves. But I do think there's a valid point to be made that teams in Florida, Arizona would be more successful even in cities like Quebec City. As heartbroken as some cities would be, Arizona included, think of how bad Winnipeg felt when they left? It's almost the ONLY THING TO DO THERE! haha. I feel people in Phoenix would be heartbroken but would just move on to other things in that city. NFL, NBA etc. Proof is in your previous statement, only if the team is successful will the fans show up. That's kind of the problem. Cup winning teams are so few and far between, franchises can't rely on that alone. But big picture wise it's the NHL spreading it's brand. That's why they make trips to Asia and Europe. And it's obvious that the NHL thinks it's brand presence in Phoenix is worth the financial pain of having a team there. At the same time...probably not a good look to the brand when the building is empty! Who knows! In every city there's a crazy loyal fanbase. But that base IMO needs to be big enough to fill the building even when the team isn't good. That said, if I was a crazy Coyotes fan I'd fight against that at all costs haha.

@@_TheRinks The way I look at it is the Coyotes and every other NHL teams in layman's terms are a company. The sell their on-ice product (the players) for entertainment to fans. The consumer buys merchandise (jerseys, ball caps, etc...). They also sell the tickets to games and own TV deals so they can still have that audience when fans can't come to a game. This is how practically every Pro-Sports and Colligate team works. The Coyotes Unfortunately they were kinda screwed from the get-go, for the First five years of existence. They played in an arena that wasn't built for Hockey at all, they made the most out of it though as that place was sold out and rocking when the team was playing well. very similar to the situation in Brooklyn with the Islanders. Eventually, they decided to look for a new place. the original plan called for a barn in Scottsdale, which was the most geographically poseable. But that fell through due to political reasons. They ending up striking a deal with Glendale, and that's another problem right there. It takes about an hour to get from Scottsdale and an hour from the east valley(this is where the majority of the team fanbase is) and that's why you don't build you burn out in the burbs. Arenas should be centrally located, the same problem with Carolina, Florida, Ottawa. And all the rebuilding years, ownership troubles, Arena disputes, and the Financial downturn added salt to the wound. As a Coyotes fan myself, I have become aware of the situations that face the Coyotes, personally, I don't see the team leaving the state anytime soon. The NHL executives and owners realize that Arizona has the potential for a high return. The new Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway and President/CEO Aaron Cohen have been making efforts to install synthetic Ice in parks across the valley, this is great, one of the biggest complaints is accessibility to the rinks here. There are only 3 hockey rinks in Phoenix, Three. plus you've got the public skating and figure events going on so it makes practicing hockey hard. Let's not forget you've got to buy all the gear if you want to play, so it's a big investment because you won't know if you like it or not. Installing synthetic rinks will help with this. Over time this will help grow a new generation of fans who can relate with the NHL players. And will boost attendee members. It will also allow Hockey to compete with other big Sports in the west. If the Coyotes do pack their bags and go, I would see a team back in Quebec City rather then Houston. That's a bad idea, wouldn't make sense to put a team in another Sun Belt city when the Yotes were a flop. And I would pack my bags and move to another NHL city, can't go without Hockey. I think that the future in Arizona is a good day at the end of a storm. It certainly has taken the Coyotes a long time to build a competitive team, and they are paying for it on every level. Glendale isn't and never was an option for an Arena. Unfortunately, I don't see the Yotes getting a new place. After Sarver and the Suns tried to price gulp valley taxpayers with a new arena, the coyotes would be laughed at. ( www.si.com/nba/2018/12/14/robert-sarver-suns-arena-funding-phoenix-resident-greta-rohers ) Management needs to actively figure out something. Maybe not an arena replacement but an upgrade to the atmosphere and amenities, like what you said about GRA. New chants to intimate the Away team and make it fun or something of that nature, will definitely boost and make it a bad time for the away team. These are just my thoughts on the Coyotes troubles at hand with the Yotes and how they are and can be improved.

Rinks Around the League im not saying moving teams because there bad. I think the way the original jets left was heartbreaking because it was forces outside there control with it small market and the Canadian dollar. And they went from Manitoba where they live and breathe hockey to Arizona. Similar with Quebec City except they moved to Colorado a place that has a bigger hockey fanbase. I still don’t think the Nordiques should have left Quebec City. With Ottawa they shouldn’t move they should strip the franchise from Melnyk immediately. The Phoenix area has a lot to do good weather nightlife spring training for baseball and other sports

Just move to Houston or Kansas City already. Hockey is not working there.
