Riot's MMO Lost Lead Developer

Before people start panicking, he moved to be closer with his surviving family. In December he tweeted this " I tend to avoid personal news here; that’s not why most of you follow me. But I just lost my brother and my father does not have long to live so I will be AFK for some time." Less than 24 hours ago he tweeted that he sold his house and is moving. Hard to be a producer of a mmo remote.

Tbh, I'd be panicking if the MMO was a small project but it's a massive one, meaning many people are working with the same idea in mind. Even if the "leader" steps down, they can probably find a new one in a reasonable amount of time. Also, knowing the workflow of programmers, just because the leader is gone doesn't mean the whole schedule is gone too. I doubt it'll affect the workflow that much behind the scenes 🤷‍♂️. The problem would be if they bring a new guy from the outside to lead the project 😐.

@@louisrobitaille5810 The issue is that people have already been scarred by good projects being ruined by bad leadership. If the leadership is in question, then the entire project is in question. They're still early in development so there's no guarantee that anything Ghostcrawler has contributed will even last long enough to be in the final build. That's the concern. Not to be overly pessimistic but it's a real possibility that whoever has stepped up to take over the overseeing of the development of this game can screw over everything ghostcrawler has laid out, to put it bluntly. This is heightened due to Ghostcrawler's reputation, specifically. The MMO genre has always been a shaky one. Very very few succeed, and the ones that do, don't typically last long, other than just a handful. They're not very profitable. Ghostcrawler has been a very trustworthy figurehead in both the MMO community and the Riot community for a good long while now, so specifically losing his influence puts a TON of things up in the air. We really don't know the full extent of what he's contributed over the 9 years at Riot to make the runeterran lore and league of legends game as it is now, and by extension what exactly will be lost by his departure. Only time will tell, but as it stands now, it is uncertain. On top of that, he was the sole connection that the community had with the development team. We don't know what dev will take his place and leak out information for us, or if there will be one at all. We might just be kept in the dark for years now. Personally, I trust him when he says he's built a team he's happy about. But that's only cuz that's the only real option right now. I can certainly understand why people are concerned over this. There is certainly a plethora of talent in Riot, but Greg Street is irreplaceable. The Riot MMO under Ghostcrawler's leadership will undoubtedly be different than the Riot MMO that is developed without him. Hopefully, it'll still turn out good. I have faith in Riot in general, but I know for a lot of people, particularly people in the broader MMO community outside of Riot Games, that faith was supported by Greg Street solely.

Still waiting for an MMO to do what Guild Wars 1 did. Amazing story telling. Primarily almost always competitive challenging fights whether it was a random mob or a world boss. Leveling wasn't the focus so gameplay balance and exciting moments was. Greatest version of mmo pvp in existence. Only 8 abilities with one elite skill to slot with approximately 100 skills per class with secondary classes. This effectively gave you 200+ moves to choose from which gave you the most amazing feeling of ownership over your build. You could actually use combinations no one else tried before. I still remember rocking a pvp interrupt ranger/mesmer completely kitted with moves that blew up spellcasting, and interrupted key moves. This meant I was able to focus entirely on shutting down spellcasters most important moves. If I chose wrong and selected unimportant spells to stop I was pretty useless, however guild wars had a system with glyphs over the head of the caster. In this way I could quickly deduce the most important spells to stop, huge aoe, revives, massive heals ect. I never once in my years of playing ever saw a single player with my build. Bring this shit back PLEASE.

Well last year Greg tweeted that his brother died and his father was dying. I thought his father died as well but who knows maybe he's still alive but in bad health. His reasons for leaving are justified he wants to be closer to family and spend more time with them. According to his last tweets he even moved out to be closer to them. Greg built a team he can trust for the Runeterra MMO and has full confidence in them so I'm not worried in the slightest in regards to that, rather I worry for him at a personal level. My guess is it will be an extension. I agree with Necrit about the most logical thing would be to start with the Northern continent, not including Bridgewater and The Shadow Isle. Wrath of the Lich King was a great story and artscape, but ultimately it rode the curtails of The Burning Crusade. It's like Pirates of the Caribbean 2... it made more money because it's a sequel to an all-time great so it made a boat-load (sorry). However, it capsized the momentum of the franchise. The movies were good enough to make 5 more, just like WoW's expansions. You could make a case that WotLK was the beginning of the end...

If you look in the current gaming landscape, the most commonly enjoyed games and the ones who get the most success are the ones that you can thoroughly enjoy as single player experiences. - The multiplayer aspects are there mainly to have a community to show off your character to, and to facilitate PvP, or to trade with, but nowadays people who prefer content that requires a group commitment and socialization are the minority. As much as we meme on the "You think you want, but you don't." answer regarding Vanilla WoW, it was said in a very condescending tone, but if you look at the numbers, they *were* technically correct. - It's just that their engagement at Blizzcon and on the internet is usually with the "hardcore" minority of their fanbase, so obviously they had an extremely poor reception. If Riot's MMO is gonna succeed, it has to be built on a solid foundation of a functional single-player experience, with multi-player features added on top, but in a way that doesn't subtract from the ability to play out people's Sword Art Online fantasies of being the solo god.

Indeed. But lets not forget, we're in a VERY different period. A new WoW will NEVER succeed nowadays. It has to be something new and well thought out. I think Ghostcrawler stepping down after (most likely) building the foundation of the MMO, will prevent the 'oh no, another WoW clone, ugh' issue. Because, you know, let's be real. The League of legends fanbase is far from liking a WoW game. Ghostcrawler leaving is a genius move because it gives space to creative minds bringing something new and (maybe) innovative. It is a risk, yes. But they have the resources to do so, and a new WoW is not a solution.

i am curious if Necrit or anybody have any info on what type of MMO we are looking forward to? a wow type, a ffxiv type or a lost ark type?

@@5H4D3 i sure wouldn't hope so friend, while GW2 nailed the raiding with the group aspect it flopped on many other fronts including player retainability if a new mmo is to succeed it can not go the WoW or the GW2 style or else it will end up like Ashes of creation and New world with only the dedicated members playing it which is not enough to fund any game longterm

@@MaydaTiger New World flopped because of how shit it was at launch not necessarily because of the type of MMO it was, AoC we can't say anything on since the game is not yet released. As for GW2, I love the living world aspect of it, the unconventional quest system and how they made it so no map is dead content once you outlevel it. And let's not forget that they have the best mount system out of any MMO out there.

@@5H4D3 with all do respect friend it seems your info are lacking while GW2 sure got some great aspects it falls short on what interests players specially up and coming exactly why the migration went from WoW to FFXIV and not GW2

I want a Genshin-impact style MMO (minus the Gacha). I just want a singleplayer world where I can get the option to put multiplayer on. Saves a lot on the lag if you ask me. If we can't have that, at least a WoW world-building equivalent would be fine.
