I have to admire the guy in the green jacket and his dedication to smoking. He's being pushed and pulled from all directions but still manages to keep that stogie going the whole time. That's when EVERYONE smoked:the doctor delivering your wife's baby, the priest listening to your confession, gas station attendants...you name it.Plus they all wore hats.

The whole point was that Americans were attacking other Americans who were within their rights to assemble peacefully. The majority who were there were not hippies as every one thinks. The majority were librarians, ministers, mothers and even children. The so called hippies were a small number. My 45 year old uncle went there to demonstrate against America's policy in Vietnam and he was no hippy. He got clubbed and arrested for exercising his right to freedom of speech..

And so what if they were hippies? What is your point?

I will not argue with ignorance. Get another cold beer it will help wash down the garbage you spew. I will say this, anyone who shows the fortitude (look it up if you have to) to stand up for freedom of speech is a hero. Hippie, mother, uncle, Panther, anyone!

colderbeer In most instances the police charged the crowds of protesters without ANY WARNING. Mayor Daley's police ruled the strrets of Chicago with an iron fist.

Edwin Newman was one of the most mild-mannered reporters around, so for him to be manhandled like that was extraordinary. Dan Rather also got punched in the stomach and pushed around that night.

Wonder who that guy was that was complaining about his credentials being repeatedly checked in between John Chancellor's report (starting around 0:45)? He sounds like he could have been great as a boxing announcer.

Daley wanted his own police force to control not the National guard. He should have let cameras roll live outside convention. But then again, he should have been convicted for 1919 and what happened the next year.

throughout the history of the US the democrats represented ideals closest to what the republicans have today. a huge shift around/leading up to the Reagan years saw democratic supporters split off, leaving them in turmoil (which resulted in such a landslide victory for Reagan's first term). we are seeing some of the same sentiment in the republican camp these days, since they represent such a wide array of people- from the conservative religious to the conservative economic. 1960s D = today's R

We needed Fox News to cover Watergate, I wonder what sort of spin they would have put on it in order to have given Nixon a pass on what he had done?
