That’s a Yamaha SG 2 or 3000. Very popular solid body in the early 80s. Bill Nelson also used one at the time. Midge Ure is still touring and he might have some insight on the song. You guys are awesome for honoring Chris like this. Thanks!

This was very innovative in 1980 when it came out. My favorite Midge Ure Era Ultravox album is Rage In Eden from 1981. The title track is quite haunting. ✌️

My fave synth pop/rock band before New Order came along. The previous lead singer John Foxx has some great stuff too - Europe after the rain., Underpass, Dancing like a gun, Systems of Romance...to name a few.

Thank you for doing this recommendation by me, I'm just sad that it's on this occasion. R.I.P. Chris Cross. This track is from the second incarnation of 'Ultravox' the first being with John Foxx, Midge Ure is the vocalist here, he has been in many bands and solo over the years, 'Slik', 'Thin Lizzy', 'The Rich Kids', 'Visage' etc, he's about 70 years old now.

Interestingly most of the members of Magazine, including John McGeoch, later played with Visage. Also true of Robin Simon who played brilliantly with Magazine and the John Foxx era Ultravox.

my music collection started with three cassette tapes, one of which was Ultravox - The Collection and this was a stand out song to me at the time. interestingly it was your reactions to Split Enz that brought me to your channel and while listening to this track I couldn't help but notice some subtle similarities. it made me think of My Mistake and i wonder if it was a reflection of the time, or instrumentation or even whether artists were influencing and inspiring each other - regardless, this was a great walk down memory lane and I look forward to hearing them again on your channel.

If you go for this song go for the live version from the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test from 1977 and readily available on youtube and in my opinion better than the version on LP.

Dang! Those are sad news indeed! 😞 And it's correct, Chris Cross is the Bryan Ferry look-alike on the left. And well spotted, Chris! Yet another Yamaha SG guitar! 😀 But the coolest guitar I've seen Midge Ure play is actually his all-grey Ibanez one 😁 I think Chris Cross had a matching Yamaha bass, too! 😀 I'd actually not heard this particular song before either and like it a lot, too! 😀 I really don't understand why so many U-vox fans dump on the Midge Ure-fronted incarnation!? He has a great voice and sings awesomely, and the music is ace, too! 🤩👍

Ultravox had some great tunes with canny videos to go with them, Loves great Adventure and Dancing with tears in my eyes being a couple of them. Greatest travesty in music was their Vienna being kept off the top spot by novelty act Joe Dolce with Shaddup your face 🤦♂️ But Midge is so talented from Slik, Thin Lizzy, The Rich Kids, Visage, Ultravox and of course his solo work (love If I Was) going on to be one of the main men in writing Do they know it’s Christmas and organising Band Aid and Live Aid Oh and Happy Birthday

Yamaha SGs were brought out in the 70s to compete with Les Pauls and Carlos Santana switched to one in the late70s/early 80s so I assume they were popular in the States to some extent as well as here in Britain. They are heavy, mahogany, with amazing sustain, and the later SG2000s had split coil pick-ups, rare in those days and certainly not available on Les Pauls, which made them very versatile. A top video to watch Chris Cross playing bass on is the Ultravox Mark 1 with Jon Foxx on the Old Grey Whistle Test 1979 doing Hiroshima Mon Amour - they first do Slow Motion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6DPcpx8bJx3hMk I like both mark one and two of Ultravox. Quite different bands but both great. The past is a foreign country. Cooler than cool. Barry McMurdock

She was absolutely gorgeous, and all the guys were trying to date her, but ended up disappointed. Ultravox was founded by originally and front man John Foxx in 1974, at that time they went by Tiger Lily. Their 1977 debut album was self titled 'ULTRAVOX!' and also the same year their second album was 'Ultravox!-ha-ha-ha!' which that was original guitarist Stevie Shears last album he was on. He was fired because he was still in the punk rock mode and John Foxx and the other members wanted to move in other creative directions musically. When they recorded their third album 'Systems of Romance,' Robin Simon was their new guitarist. That album was released in 1978. I saw Ultravox in concert in March, 1979 (I was 23) at the Whiskey A-Go-Go Nightclub in West Hollywood, CA. It was around that time that Island Records dropped them so Ultravox self financed their tour here in the US which they became popular more so here during that time than in England. Just before the end of March, 1979 John Foxx quit Ultravox because of creative differences with his bandmates, except with guitarist Rob Simon, and he too quit shortly afterwards. When I bought Ultravox's (newly reformed) in 1980 the fourth album 'Vienna,' I was disappointed that John Foxx was no longer with the band. Midge Ure replaced John Foxx on lead vocals and guitarist Robin Simon. Still it is a good album, but that is only one that I like. Bassist, keyboard musician and backup vocals Chris Cross became a professional Therapist Counselor after Ultravox disbanded. Then it was a few years back they returned to perform concerts. Please do a reaction to their opening live performance of "Astradyne" from their "Return to Eden" concert. "Astradyne" is the first cut from their 1980 album 'Vienna.' Also piano, keyboard, synthesizer, violin, and viola musician Billy Currie was classically trained when he was a young kid, and as he became older he did play in symphonic orchestras. For quite sometime he had no real interest in rock oriented music, then he joined Ultravox.

Here's an idea for a "Who Did it Best?" - Ultravox doing 'Mr X' or John Foxx doing 'Touch and Go'. It was a song Ultravox were working on before John Foxx left the band. They're lyrically different but musically you can tell they came from the same source.

A nice track from the band. Good guitar work from Ure (similar to his work with Visage). Looks like a Japanese Yamaha SG. They were reasonably popular at the time - better made than Gibson SG but less of of a rock look. I think John Mcgeoch played one and Bob Marley. At the time they were good value. My brother wishes he never got rid of his! Can we have a song by Visage - please? Perhaps Fade to Grey.

RIP Chris - saw them a few times in the early 80s with this line-up. The whole band was always completely on it and all played other instruments. Chris is playing synth here but also played bass most of the time. Billie Currie also plays viola and, occasionally guitar. Midge plays keys as well as guitar and vocals. First time I saw them they were all on electronics for one track and the last one had Billie on guitar, Warren on drums, and Midge and Chris on duelling basses. As for the guitar - it might be the same actual guitar! Midge was in Visage with John McGeoch, of Magazine, and produced The Skids! This track was the last one on the Vienna album and follows 'Vienna' in the most magnificent way. The album was written and recorded quickly after Midge Ure joined the band, so believe it or not - it was rushed!

Firstly , RIP Mr Cross , a vital and stylish cog in the Ultravox machine , I asked for this track as along with Sleepwalk it’s my fav track by them . This is a cracking track by them , melodic , bit of vim n verve n full of Mr Ures fingerprints , but most importantly it was SANS that dreadful old fraud John Foxx… according to some of my esteemed fellow commentors he was a gifted visionary and talented musician.. 🤦♂️ That’s their opinion and I respect that , I however see him as the anchor that was preventing the band forging ahead , the best thing that happened to Ultravox was John Foxx thinking he’d be better off going solo - how’d THAT work out ? 😝 I bought Underpass cos I was naive and rudderless after the fall of Punk .. what utter bollocks ! I’ve held it against Foxxy ever since then , since that time I’ve been subjected to earlier Foxx affected Ultravox and it’s pants on a GRAND scale .. no idea what you guys are going on about when you say “ iconic “ , “ classic original “ etc … Ultravox achieved their true potential when that sad , dreary , toneless Foxx was replaced by a genuine musician with an ear for melody and a good tune Midge Ure who along with the rest of the band managed to meld the new Synth based sound with good old fashioned Rock n melody prospered as was their destiny n auld Foxxy withered like the Prune he was . In essence I think Foxx was a fraud n a bore and Midge Ure saved Ultravox with tracks like this .. I thank you 🙏 👍🏴
