Get the sony a7iii. The HLG2 (PP10) is far and away the ultimate color profile. it's almost the same amount of dynamic range as SLOG, but is far easier to grade, and can be used straight out of the camera if its really necessary.

@@sungkim465 yeah i'd roll with a 4k even though the 6k is sick just because the file sizes are obscene. Stabilized lens on a handheld rig with some weight to it is a good handheld setup..i actually use a cage and rig for my a7iii too because the extra weight is nice. It's definitely not as convenient as an a7iii, but grading 12 bit and not having to deal with the bizarre shit that occurs in Sony 8 bit footage is worth it to me

I´m on Sony a7 III with the GM 24-70mm f/2.8 for two years already, it's been a great and reliable camera for every works, but I´ll switch to another camera with a more solid 10bit codec and 4K at 60 FPS. I've been waiting for the a7S III since ever but nothing yet from Sony so I'll probably switch to the new 1DX MK3. im shooting on an a7iii as an "a" cam and just picked up an a6600 with a 18-105mm as my "b" cam. The only two lenses i have for the a7iii are the 50 1.8 and the 16-35 f4. love the vids dude. youve helped me more than you know along my filmmaking journey.

100% agree with you. 8bit in 2020 doesn’t cut it any more. I don’t think people realize the huge difference between 8bit and a jump to 10bit. Color grading 8bit like you said it pure garbage and god forbid you try color grading the s log in 120p you can say bye to your footage. I see the black magic 6k is treating you well. Your color grading looks unreal man and I’m glad you have the proper tool to take you to the next level.

I sold my A7sii about 3 weeks ago. It’s been a great camera but I was using it less and less since buying the A7iii. I’ve also learnt a lot using that camera and working around it’s limitations.

Your friends that told you to simply switch to the Sony a 7iii were correct. That’s what I did. I’ve never looked back. I sold my 87S to one year ago and purchased a second a7iii and I mix that footage with the Sony F 55 and it looks gorgeous! Yes even and very low light.

Been shooting corporate and docs with the GH4 since 2015. A little crop for 4k 25p, no crop for 96p slow motion. I compensate for the smaller sensor with very fast glass. The next big jump for me will be something like the S1H, which allows me to shoot cinema quality video along with high quality stills. The tradeoff will be in gear size, storage requirements and having to get new lenses. I think today's future-iconic camera is the BMPCC4K and maybe 6K. So many have jumped on the braw bandwagon over the last couple of years, and it's a real gamechanger for grading.

I used to shoot on an A7Sii. Totally agree, grading SLOG working with those compressed files is a bloody nightmare, especially if you’re banging out edits in the field on a laptop. Been shooting with a P4K since it came out, absolutely love that camera. Mainly use a set of Meike primes + a speed booster for my Canon glass. Nice to have all those options. Picked up an S1 + Sigma EF adapter recently, mainly as a new timelapse A cam + for RAG travel footage. The quality is great, full VLOG, 4K 25/30p 10bit internal and 1080 125p 8bit or 60p 10bit with no crop. Fantastic hybrid camera with loads of useful features on-board - although larger / chunkier than your usual mirrorless cams. Love your work mate, glad you’re working with the P6K now.

Which Canon glass do you use with the P4K? Do you wish you would've gone P6K or do you still feel the P4K is the choice to make?

I’ve got loads of L glass, 16mm up to 400mm. The 6K wasn’t out when I got the 4K at launch. Still happy with it for my use though. Depends on your needs. If cost isn’t as issue the 6K is perfect if you just use EF glass and/or specifically want 6K footage, you’ll create larger files but you can punch in, useful if you output a lot of 4K content. You also get a slightly sharper 4K image from 6K downsampled to 4K. But the 4K with a 0.71 or 0.64 speed booster gives you more lens options and you actually get a wider image with boosted EF glass compared to the native 6K (its sensor is close to S35 so still crops full frame glass). IQ and DR from both is equally sick though. One other thing to consider, the 4K battery life ain’t great but shooting 6K absolute rinses through batteries. Plenty of options though, James set up a nice solution in a previous upload.

No worries. Personally I wouldn’t get too hung up on an IS lens just use a gimbal. But if you really want a decent lens with IS for weddings / RAG I’d probably look a zoom, like the Canon 24-105mm. A great lens and will give you decent focal ranges of 32-142mm on a 0.71 booster. If you need something faster the Lumix G 12-35mm f/2.8 IS works well and is native MFT.

Mate, even people hate on it...give Nikon Z6 a chance. Yes, it has its flaws but also great strengths. Nikon is doing great work with the firmware updates that made the AF MUCH better and also enabled external RAW recording. The handling of the camera is sooo damn nice, the button layout makes it a joy to shoot with (yes...I read this argument before buying and thought "WTF, who cares"...but mate I tell you, it makes a difference!). Also people are scarred for it not having 2 card slots...but QXDs are super reliable and you will have a hard time finding someone online that ever had one failing on him. The lens line up isn't great, but if we are honest with each other - they have mostly everything you need. 4k, 120fps 1080p and all with no crop. Last but not least, the colors a great. I was skeptical as well but after going to a store, holding it, playing around...I feel in love. Give LOVE A CHANCE!

I just got Panasonic Gh5S in 2020 & I love the quality I'm getting. Low light no problem, vintage lenses no problem, can use old Canon EFs lenses with modification & speedbooster... Autofocus is pain but who buys a cinema camera for autofocus... internal 4k 10 bit 4.2.2 120fps@1080p, Anamorphic... Battery lasts at least 1.5hrs PS: Yes I was waiting for A7siii!

I'm shooting weddings, interviews on my old Sony NEX-VG30 and NEX-7(for gimbal). If i need something for music video or commercial i take it in rental or from collegues. Sometimes it's Gaffer or DOP with camera. Also 10,12Bit is wery massive, you need a tonn of hard drives. a6500, a7III, x-t3, BMP4K is ok for most situations. Stop buying cameras!

I agee with everything you said about making you a better film maker using the A7Sii. I often edit work from other people that have shot on all sorts of cameras and it makes me realise how clueless most people are because they always mess up, WB, exposure, lighting, composition etc. I've got better at just naturally doing all those things well because I know I can't easily fix it in post when shooting with A7Sii. All I want now is 4k60p 10bit and 1080 120p full frame.

As u mentioned - nail the exposure in camera is crucial. It's tricky with Sony 8 bit - if I protect highlights, the shadows instantly falling apart just after i think about lifting them :D Do u have some advice for balancing exposure or work in post?

I use an A7iii and a couple of Lumix G80's and it's quite tricky getting them to match. If the next wave of Sony's have a flip out screen I will get one of those. If not, another A7iii maybe

Shoot at a wide field of view like 10-24mm and set your aperture to Something like f/8. So the wider the field of view and the higher your aperture the sharper your allaround picture gets

Any ideas on you’re replacement for the A7sii yet? I’ve kind of falling back in love with my sony as i picked up the Sirui Anamorphic it’s loads of fun. I have the 1dx mkiii on order but hoping Sony are gonna bring a hybrid out with 10 bit minimum. ( not looking likely any time soon ). An A7s3 won’t be the “ Hybrid” i want unless it has an 24mp sensor ( Unlikely ). The 1dxiii is looking like an absolute beast. So I’m in limbo at the moment. Anyway I’m rambling, surprise surprise. 👍

Get a A7III, HLG to BT2020 is great for grading in 8 bit. Amazing autofocus, 4K in super 35 mode. No crop in 120. They can be had for well under 2k now, and will remain a great secondary camera for the A7SIV

@@dna8269 Is awful to work with? Has files sizes that will cost you more to store than the camera is worth? Has questionable color science? It's a great personal project camera, it's also a great way to get fired for professional work when your usb connection flakes out and you lose your clips

@@chrisjames7489 Questionable color science? I thought the opposite and it has some of the best color science...shrug. CFast for anything critical Storage is a bitch but anything 4K+ is going to have the same demands. a7iii (HLG3 w/ leeming lut is the base for grading) is my primary right now but I despise the 8bit. Very tempted to scrap the entire system for a BM4K just for the color flexibility alone after working with some raw files in comparison

I use my sony a7sii to shoot the behind the scenes video for the photoshoots on my channel and its amazing! Don't say goodbye to it rather say see you later! lol nice video

Do you have a video over that picture profile you mentioned around 4:15? Been trying and struggling to work with S-Log2 and I'm about over it. I'd be super interested in knowing how you get such great dynamic range and colors out of your sii.

Great video dude, I just picked up a Sony A7Sii even tho its 2020 lol, going through the learning processes you mentioned in this video. I think I'm gonna hold onto it and learn to master it as best as possible and wait it out until Sony announced the A7Siii at which point I'll be upgrading.
