3 Questions for the A7III please: 1) Do you still get a blackout on the display when recording 4k if you plug in an HDMI monitor? 2) You said that you can power it with an external power bank... in that case, does it require a battery to be plugged in like with the other Sony cameras? 3) There aren't many videos online discussing HLG vs Slog. I personally like using Cine4 for dark interiors and Slog2 for exterior sunny, because Slog produces noise in the shadows. So 2 quick questions here: Are the shadows of Slog better on the a7III (because overall it's much better in low light than others)? and can HLG be considered a middle ground between Cine4 and Slog? (how are the shadows in HLG?) -> I would love to see one of your test videos for this new mode compared to the others. Thank you very much! P.S. What profile did you use in this video?

Good information BUT you need to USE SAME LENSES in both the cameras for comparison. One is a G- lens on A7III and the other is a simple Sony lens on A7SII. It does makes difference.

The image from the a7s II is better for 1080p, 120fps, and low light. The improved noise levels in the a7 iii is coming at the expensive of detail at every ISO. For $2K it's great, but the a7s II is just a better camera in terms of image.

Albeit that 3 hours wasn't continuous file. (Although a great 'work around' for the tax code restrictions to keep it at 30 minute recording would be to switch to the 2nd sd card once it hit 30 minutes, but I doubt that's currently possible).

Your AF information around 11:00 was great! My biggest gripe with my A7R2 has been filming 4K video of moving subjects. If I'm standing still and switch to manual focus, it's spot-on. Manual focus isn't optimal for all video situations though. Thanks so much for the in-depth review. You sold me on A7III upgrade for video =)

I’m immediately jealous of the AF system as I do a lot of gimbal work where PD really is beneficial. I’m jealous of the touchscreen too. I can get the A7SII substantially cheaper than the A7III and more or less new. The A7III is a great camera for the money but I want a camera primarily for video. From what I've seen so far, 1080p video from the A7SII looks slightly better and the A7III looks like it might it might be slightly better at everything else. However, is it truly better because my main concerns with it are aggressive noise reduction which looks like it might be the case in many videos I have seen and the other thing is aliasing/moire. Stopping aliasing is very important because some cameras being touted as good for video totally fail in this area and are in fact poor for video cameras because of it i.e. Fujis. I expect Sony will release an A7SIII at some stage but that will likely be much more expensive. Any more opinions on this from anyone who has used the cameras would be welcome.

However, the primary function would be concert video so the low light capabilities of the A7III concern me a little. However, the slow auto focus of the a7sII might make some shots unusable if it's not in focus. This is a tough one...

Thanks! The lowlight isn't a huge difference for normal use, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's already better than almost anything else out there. Typically at concerts, you have light and your iso will stay around 1600 or below with good lenses.

Cheap LED lights cause this is your shutter speed is too high (it had to go to 1/800th for that test) at regular shutter speeds there is no issue, and this is with any camera.

Thanks, Max. You have confirmed my suspicion of Sony's iso noise reduction on the newer a7 series (a7iii and a7riii). I did similar test with a7s2 vs a7riii and I noticed that after 12800 iso, a7riii had this weird mirage video image compared to a7s2 (at 64000 or higher iso, this also happened with a7s2): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKTGfYd3ZduYn7M&t So, I will be keeping my a7sii and a7r3 and as well as my fs700r. I think these three cameras are the best cameras for price and performance. I think Sony has reached a limit where they can not improve anymore other than colour, higher data mb, and better bit rate (10bit or12bit 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 and 200mb+). I think that's where we will truly see the difference in the future. For me, a7riii will cover photography, day and evening video shoot. a7s2 will cover night scene and fs700r for 240fps slow motion and 4k 10bit 4:2:2 at 60fps/120fps. Sony action cam for under water and extreme sport. DJI Mavic pro for aerial point of view. I am ready to do short films now in any conditions. :)

Get the a7r3 if you can afford it. Sony a7sii is better for extreme low light condition. a7r3 covers the day and evening shots, a7sii for the night shots and fs700r is the magic 240fps 1080p slow motion and colour grading 4k 10bit 4:2:2 filmic epic videos. You cover all your grounds. The only wild card is a7siii, but 99.9% of the time a7r3, a7sii and fs700r will do it all. In addition, you should use the money to get action cam and 4k drone if you don't have them. You can now be your own small independent film company... oops, I forgot, the sounds... that's another story- Zoom H5/H6, Zoom F4/F8 or Sound devices Mixpre 6, etc.

And... Lighting accessories, 4k external monitor, fast PC computer for 4k video editing, etc. The list goes on and on. The morrow of the story is that there will never be enough gears. Just shoot the film already. : )

Well i just returned my a6500 and ordered the A7iii to go along with my a7sii. Now I think the only time I will ever use my A7sii is as a B cam and for low light situations: like wedding receptions and such. Dope review. the lenses I have are 16-35mm f4 and 55mm 1.8.......I do mostly business, corporate, and wedding videography.
