The H&K Mp5 9mm submachine gun is one of the most requested weapons we get on here. I want to know how this became one of the world's most famous submachine guns? To me, this gun is a rise and fall story like ‘scarface’ or ‘wolf of wallstreet’.
For instance, in the 80’s it was still at the height of its popularity with you know, every special forces unit and SWAT team using it but by the late 90’s the mp5 had hit rock bottom with those same units moving away from using it. So you’re probably wondering what happened, how did it all go wrong? - We’ll answer all of that but first - Que the MP5 80’s montage!

I forget the gun shop name, but my dad used to go to it to get some primers and powder. I grew up in Ventura. The LAPD didn't buy the firearms. The owner had to wait to get them back because of them being evidence. He was not to happy with it. The only good thing it was free advertising. I remember watching the shoot out live at Ft. McNair while I was in the Army Honorguard while cleaning my M-14. As soon as it was over we put "Heat," on.

@@Taskandpurpose They were Colt Sporters aka Ar-15, the owner gave them the guns to use. From what my dad was told from the owner. The owner knew the officers that requested them. He gave them to them thinking they would either be bought by LAPD or returned right away. However they were held as evidence and he was not compensated. Not sure what happened after that because my parents moved from CA in '98. I don't think that shop is still in business. LA County went after a lot gun shops in the late 90s.

It would be nice if he had at least mentioned that it was a derivative of the G3. The G3 was meant to be a modular weapons system in 4 cartridges. First in 7.62 nato then 7.62x39 then 5.56/.223, then In 9x19mm. So the reason it worked from the beginning was it was a scaled down version of the G3. This is to completely ignore the HK33 in 5.56 as well.

@agmsmith4079
@agmsmith4079 3 жыл бұрын
Actually cops have to be trained and certified on the AR15 before they are allowed to patrol with one in their car. Around 10% are certified. So there aren’t very many... and those that are, are under trained with it, the Borderline shooting is an example of that (the police officer that died, died from the officer behind him shooting him in the back with his AR15). The AR15 officer, realizing he just shot another officer, then quickly rushed the downed officer to the hospital leaving the mass shooter free to continue his shooting spree. The incident highlights just how poorly trained police are when it comes to firearms and tactics (CQB tactics to be specific).

it's also getting replaced by the scorpion evo3 a1 (which uses the same caliber) in many countries. and it's easy to see why, really. The evo3 is more adjustable, lighter, cheaper and easier to repair on the field. It's basically an MP5 but better in every way. Only thing the mp5 has over it is it has a bit less recoil, and I really mean just a bit, which isn't even close to enough to justify the massively increased price tag and other issues.

Great video as always, but at min. 7:42, you mentioned that the Special Forces used the suppressed version of the MP5 during the VietNam War. Now, I wasn't around at that time. But, from all the literature I was exposed to right after that war, the Special Forces primarily used Grease Guns and Swedish Ks for their submachine usage. You did an excellent job of pointing out how the Iran hostage siege in London really put the MP5 on everyone's radar. But, you might also let people know that the Uzi was really the rock star of the 1970s. All the images of the 1967 and Yom Kippur Wars and the Israeli soldiers carrying around this brand new design that people hadn't seen before. Then, the successful hostage rescue at Entebbe, then the fact that all the bodyguards and even the Secret Service would carry Uzis under their suit jackets all lead to its mystique and appeal. But, when all the gun magazines compared how much more accurate, lighter and more adaptable the MP5 was over the Uzi, things started changing. And, as you said, the SAS hostage rescue at the London embassy really solidified the onset of MP5's rise.

Regarding the North Hollywood shootout, the 3 LAPD SWAT guys that finally took out the two Tangos actually had issued AR15s (at the time they were an as needed long gun though their primary shoulder gun was the MP5) and it’s what they needed to finish the job. The big change in policing after this shootout was many US departments started allowing regular patrol officers to carry rifles, whereas before that rifles were a SWAT only option. I have shot mp5 in the navy. No recoil even at full auto. Its true that 9mm cant penetrate modern body armor but if you are shooting indoors last thing you want is to penetrate few walls so assault rifles are kind of crap anywhere else than war zones. The G3 was developed from an adaptation of the MG42 (roller locked, not just roller delayed) mechanism, which the Mauser engineers used for the Gerät 06 prototype. During development they noticed that the short recoil part can be omitted if the roller lock is turned into a roller delay. Which resulted in the Gerät 06H (the H stands for halbverriegelt, or "half locked"), which in turn was turned into the production version StG 45(M). It was never produced in large numbers, but the Mauser engineers continued working on that after WW2, first in France and then later in Spain at CETME, where they developed the rifle named after the design institute (together with the Spanish engineers working there). That development ultimately turned into the G3 and got H&K (founded by some other former Mauser engineers) its breakthrough.

According to a former employee, who now works at another gun store, the rifles and mags were never returned as they became evidence and a jumbled up regulation nightmare involving the DOJ regarding handing out rifles without the proper paperwork, etc.

8:11 The real reason the MP5 is still relevant is because of how quiet it is. I have lower recoil, more reliable rifles in a variety of calibers that feature better external and terminal ballistics. But the delayed bolt makes it incredibly quiet compared to all other popular platforms. Additionally it fully eliminates any flash from the ejection port when running in low light. I can't think of any self-loading rifle that mitigates sound and flash better.

WTF! SORRY, BUT I’M TO DRUNK TO EAT THIS CHICKEN!!! You have lower recoil and more reliable rifles in diff calibers that feature better external and terminal ballistics, but the mp5 is QUITER!? So you would choose it, LOL OMG! Its a sub gun! So yes rifle calibers generally have better terminal ballistics, wtf is external ballistics! In 18 yrs of operations, i have not found a weapons platform more reliable than the mp5, broken firing pin, broken firing pin spring and broken dog ears on earlier rolling bearing design, GUESS WHAT! Still kept running, just slowed down! OMG NO FLASH FROM EJECTION PORT (action) pretty much every weapon since the gas is used to cycle the action, how about the muzzle flash, theres something i’m worried about. Delayed roller blowback is NINJA quiet because of magic? No not all that quiet unless you use the SD model, which requires special ammo ana a lot of maintenance (better to get suppressor and cheaper) with no knock down unless danger close, generally not worth it. You cant find any rifle that mitigates sound or flash, because your comparing apples to oranges, pistol cartridges and function to rifle cartridges and function. Go to Harry Potter land and ask for a wand or really learn what your commenting on! Sorry for trolling but I’m semi drunk!

@@dsd333d Wasn't going to reply to a drunk comment, but I'm stuck in a waiting room at a doctor's office so why not. External ballistics is the flight of the bullet. 9mm, especially subsonic rounds, are poor choices for shooting at longer ranges. The MP5 is reliable, but there are more reliable options, and your experience of having broken firing pins and rollers doesn't really prove it's reliable, even if yours somehow ran while disintegrating. I have to admit, I'm not sure what "dog ears" are in an MP5. There is no gas system in an MP5. And when discussing the reduced flash and sound, I'm referencing the MP5 with a silencer. It wouldn't make any sense to care about sound and flash from the ejection port on an unsuppressed gun. There is no special or rare ammo required. You can shoot a suppressed MP5 with any standard 9mm ammo, but I again assumed everyone would know I was referring to only subsonic loads when discussing it's reduced sound. And yes, I am comparing different firearms (apples and oranges as you put it), that was the point.

That made the mauser engineers experiment around and develope the roller delayed blowback we know today for the stg45m aka the gerät06. There have only been a handful of parts made for those guns before the end of the war and have only been assambled by mauser employees to show the guns to the allies after the war. However after the war Germany wasn't allowed to produce any weapons so a lot of the mauser engineers moved to Spain and continue their work with the roller delayed blowback system which resulted in the cetme, when Germany was allowed to produce guns again in the 50s and and needed a new service rifle for the bundeswehr, the mauser engineers went back to germany and started working for the spiritual successor of mauser, H&K, where they continued to tweak their cetme design and perfect it into the g3 and the other roller delayed blowback guns we know today. A key factor for not having problems at the initial release likely is that the locking mechanism is essentially the G3's mechanism scaled down, which itself had almost a decade of development under its belt. Once you know what kind of issues you're liable to encounter during dimensioning (especially tolerancing) goes a long way in making a quality product. Another factor likely is that the manufacturing at HK has its crap together when it comes to quality consistency. Recently, a bunch of turkish license made MP5SDs were imported here in Switzerland and the one my mate bought had issues with the sizing of the roller recesses in the trunion, the resulting required roller size and their space in the bolt head, making the gun a PB&J sandwich. In contrast, a genuine H&K bolt head performed flawlessly during troubleshooting.

That is 50% of the reason. Closed bolt…check.. but the real genius of the action and recoil, and accuracy is the delayed blowback design of the bolt carrier assembly. It effectively keeps the moving parts of the bolt carrier motionless for an instant, allowing the barrel to remain on target before the recoil starts affecting the firearm. That instant is long enough for the projectile to exit the muzzle. Also the trigger is very forgiving, and makes up for imperfect trigger control. Very smooth, positive, and big surface area. A combination of a few critical features that result in a very nice primary weapon. Genius. Reliable. Efficient. Awesome tool. MP5’s rock!

The intermediate cartridge took over the role of both the battle rifle and submachine gun. No need for either if you're gun shoots 5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39, etc. That being said MP5s are rad.

The MP5 family of weapons are perfect for their niche roles. Having transitioned from UZI to MP5 in 1990, and used continuously for next 14 years, I shot them all, a lot. About 300,000 rounds. The standard MP5 is superbly reliable, accurate and user friendly. The Kurtz model, short version, requires meticulous cleaning, regularly, to maintain dependable reliability, and is most useful in personal protection roles and operations requiring climbing or small space operations. The SD version is a gem, and my choice. It also requires extra cleaning efforts to maintain its Rey high reliability, but those who know and love this sub model willingly take special care of this jewel of a firearm. Balance and accuracy are superb. They all bring the very best features of this amazing firearm, and are trusted and preferred by many in the dangerous operations for which the firearm was purposefully designed for. Close quarters battle. It’s always going to be the preferred weapon for many professionals in this field. It just works and compliments the role and task. Obsolete? Perhaps due to limits of the 9mm ammunition it can’t compete in penetration scales, but for its primary role it excels and remains one of the most coveted weapons in the past 30 years. I wish I had one..

4:20 fun fact: the US police wanted to ban body armor for civilians after this. America is one of the few places I can think of where "we need to ban protection. It's making things too hard for our militarized police to kill people rather then solving societal problems" and also one of the few places where a store has better guns then the police.

It rolled off the shelves working because the Germans had so much experience working with and developing roller lock rifles during WW2. During the war they noticed bolt bounce with the roller locking mechanism and figured out that with the right geometry you can use rollers as a delay mechanism. Also it's not hard to design locking/delaying mechanisms for pistol calibers, especially if it's a rifle sized firearm.

@jackoneilsg1
@jackoneilsg1 3 жыл бұрын
Well, there's obsolete and obsolescent. While obsolete means, that something is so outdated, that it simply can't hold it's own against the modern option (eg bolt gun vs modern AR). Obsolescent means, that it still fulfills it role, but there's something new, that fills it's role even better. If you had a squad of guys with Kar98ks vs a squad of guys with M4s/AKs/G36s/whatever modern AR, the latter would wipe the floor with the bolt action squad. But if you had a squad of guys with MP5s vs a squad with M4s fighting in CQB they would be relatively evenly matched, until you factor in things like body armor.
