Repeated bosses are ok, repeated bosses with no new bosses is bad. Kirby triple deluxe has wispy wood (under the name of flowery woods), Kracko, dark Meta knight and masked dedede. That is 3 out of 10 bosses. New super Mario bros U has The koopalings, Boom Boom, bowser jr and bowser. That is 100% of the bosses in the game.

The NSMB series is quite a story. When the first one dropped, it was actually *refreshing* -- Mario had been screwing around with 3D, going to space, getting a giant water gun strapped to his ass, etc. for *forever*. Seeing a game that went back to the original style, but used new models? That was bootiful. It helped launch the RetroGaming craze in a time when everyone was very much obssessed with whatever the shiniest new things would be. It's just that rather than laying on the solid foundation of every other classic Mario game (throwing turnips in nightmare worlds, exploring primal dinosaur islands, morphing into a flying raccoon and taking out airships...) it became Nintendo's zone of comfort for easy money. Just make the same game with the same graphics again, it's *FINE*

I like the blue shell. Amazingly easy and fun to spin around and dominate the multiplayer battle mode. Honestly, though, people kinda just... Hate the New series. If they removed the name, they would be 'better.' I mean, I like Super Mario 64 DS... The controls are not the same as on the N64, yeah, but if you get the hang of them, it is a joy to run around the reimagined levels. A bit like Kid Icarus: Uprising.

I remember being a absolute master at this game. This game was my childhood alongside PMD Blue. Too bad i'm out of practice now. My favorite moments were all related to mini mario: that mini maze, surfing on bullet bills, speedrunning through the level with the big chompy fish, and launching myself to space and beyond with launch pipes. Finally, i managed to get to that one hole in the wall of that one castle level, expecting some sort of ultra-secret room. Turned out the level designers simply forgot to put a block there, but i'm still satisfied :) Good ol' times.

ive got a hot take, mini mushroom is my favorite mario powerup period and im baffled at the sheer amount of hate it gets. letting you get into little secret spaces is awesome and the floaty jump and running on water made me feel like a very watered down jesus christ when i was a kid playing this game for the first time.

To be honest, I really wish that there was more Mario games that focused on coin collecting like NSMB2. The coins are so damn addicting to collect but it's sad that they don't do much in the Mario games other than 1-ups and buying clothing in Odyssey.

Sonic has a use for rings other than 1-ups. They can be used to grant access to bonus stages, gives you a bonus hit, and it can allow you to turn into a super version once you collect enough. Maybe Mario could implement some unique features like Sonic does for common collectibles.

I think the NSMB series has been hurt by the fact that they've been outclassed by likes of Kirby, Donkey Kong, Rayman and now even the likes of Wooly World or Sonic Mania in terms of innovative level design, soundtrack, and aesthetics. Honestly to me, Super Mario Maker is the only really standout 2D Mario platformer of the last 25 years and that's due to the creativity of fan efforts more than anything.

Even with rehashed stages; the level design, aesthetics, and soundtrack still feel much fresher than the NSMB which overuses themes over four games and doesn't even have the sense of evolution in platforming that Mania often succeeds at. They're all fine, but they feel seem like Mario games designed by assembly line, rather than the labor of love Whitehead and company demonstrated.

So fun little story about the Luigi mini game in NSMBDS. We got my grandfather a DS for his birthday when he was about 76 and got him that game with it and all he ever did was play the Luigi poker game, like he'd spend hours on it at a time and it made him so happy. Supposedly he still plays his DS and 3DS but one of my fondest memories of him is seeing him play a Mario game and just be so ecstatic about it despite it being so simple.

The real problem with the New series is how generic and soulless it is. The gameplay is great, it feels good to control, the level design is top notch, they’re platformer comfort food. But in terms of having lasting charm and or being something that has a lasting impact or effect on the overall gaming sphere, the New series fails at this and fails at being something with some actual heart and soul like how Mario 1 to Mario World 2 had heart and soul. Or like how paper Mario has heart and soul or warioland or Mario 64 or sunshine or galaxy or Odyssey, you get the point

It's not really just that it's soulless or generic. It's also the fact that they throw in nostalgia pandering ( mostly from Mario 3 ) & tries to catch the spirit of it and it either fails or overstated there welcome. Also, I do feel like the level designs are as bland & dull than it should've been. The controls are fine, but the gameplay didn't interest me enough.
