Hey Jesse, congrats on reaching 600 videos (and many more by the time I'm posting this). Thank you for checking out this piece, it's one that has haunted me for ten years and, if I'm lucky, will keep on haunting me far into the future. I'm always happy to see you experience the music, I get to hear it afresh through your ears and it's very rejuvenating. Keep listening! PS. Oops, commented too soon-sorry no "in depth" addendum for this one :P

I love your piece Chris. One of the reason why I love it is because it makes it feel like a child's lullaby. Something you will never expect to hear out in space . And in this game. Being the last survivor especially in space. Its lonely. Extremely lonely. You only have yourself. Almost like youre dreaming. Despite you being in control you are still and forever will be alone which Is what makes this piece truly haunting. You won but you did you actually win. You're powerful and powerless at the same time. Truly two things that coalescense in this game. The fact that it haunts you but also opens your eyes is something unseen in most games out there and you did it. You poured your heart out and despite ror not being the most popular game. It truly has one of the best communities and soundtrack designers of all time.

Chris, if you see this, thank you for this song. Coalescence plays in the final stage of RoR. The thing about this game is that the longer it goes on, the harder it gets. The first time you reach this map you have probably lost a few times. The music is hectic and fights are chaotic. You know you are reaching a final level because the teleporter to it is different. You go in expecting a huge fight right off the start. You start the final stage alone among shipping crates and storage containers. Enemies usually spawn within a few seconds of a new area, here it feels delayed. Not long enough to take a breather, but long enough to be unsettling. The start of the song sets a tone for.the stage. Something is here, and it's gonna be big. The fighting begins and it gets tough as you explore the area the first time, easily the biggest level in the game. This stage stops you by having you go through waves of monsters blocking doors, no other stage has done this. The song builds up slowly, but the most moments of reprieve are accented by Coalescence. In a fantastic way of environmental storytelling, gameplay mechanics of gathering items to finish a build and this song hits a gaming highpoint that very, very few games have ever reached for myself. I'm happy you enjoyed this.

This track really defines Risk of Rain 1. It's the theme for the climactic final stage and sets an incredibly melancholic mood as the track literally coalesces into shape before belting out an incredibly emotional climax. The most legendary part is that as much as Coalescence fits the stage like a glove, Chris did not compose it with being a final level in mind. Chris had composed it under Hopoo's iirc loose instruction and Hopoo later made the masterful choice to use it for the finale. Truly an amazing track for an amazing game by an amazing composer and developer. "...and his music was electric."

RoR music has always felt like if the world were real, and you or I walked into any of the areas, you would legit hear the music. It's like a living breathing part of the world and story. Glad you finally got to hear a RoR1 song. "…con lentitud poderosa" is the song I am assuming you talked about a bit as coming up, and it is much the same as this one in that it is kind of special.

This is one of my favorite songs. It feels like a bittersweet epilogue--it's so meloncholy, but slowly crescendos to an emotional release. It's always the song I listen to when I need to chill/be a bit sad without going overboard.

Absolutely wonderful you’ve made it to 600! Even now I wait every day to see what you listen to and wait for your reaction. This song tho. THIS SONG has been one of my absolute FAVOURITES. I am overjoyed to see you enjoy it as well. This song resonates with me (and truly anything that moves me to tears I remember intensely) and it fits the game feel PERFECTLY. The modus operandi of the game is the slow build. Each stage you get more loot, and your character builds in strength. And the timer ticks on taunting you with the current level of difficulty (longer you go, the harder it gets- even has its own dedicated progress bar). The you get to THIS level. And it’s q u I e t Like NOTHING spawned, no enemies, no enemies. Nothing And just a suddenly one pops into existence. Then more. Then EVEN more. And it’s quickly becomes overwhelming. The chaos on screen is DEAFENING. All the rockets, elements, bullet barrages, toxic spray, explosions along with monsters retaliating. It’s maddening. But this is Risk of Rain and you’ve survived this far through chaos. And even as it builds you match the tide and ride that sonnavuhbitch HARD. AND THIS GENIUS MADE THE WHOLE SAME EXPERIENCE THROUGH SONG! Chris is a genius and no one can dissuade me from this. I cannot wait to see his works in the future. Just as much as I can’t wait to see you experience more amazing video game tracks. You go man! Congratulations once again and I for one cannot wait to see your next vids.

Commenting late, but if you enjoyed this, Chris C. also did the music for a game called DEADBOLT, which also has a unique feeling (and plays w/ a recurring motif throughout the OST which I love). My personal recommended tracks are The Proverbial Dust Biters, Heynong Man, and Blood on the Dancefloor. All stellar tracks that I still come back to even though I put down the game ~6 years ago (though really, I come back to the whole album).

This is the final stage music for RoR, it does repeat while you're still on the stage, until you start the boss fight. After a messy and gruelling mess to get all the way here, it provided (to me) a wonderful sense of melancholy and nostalgia of the journey to get all the way to this point, and the impending end of it. Again, I'd highly recommend going to the sequel again and listening to " …con lentitud poderosa" to [compare it/journey again] to the 'sequel' of the song, they're both in my top tunes of all time.

Theres one thing I absolutely love about the RoR ost, and its how it acts as an antithesis to the gameplay. Gameplay wise you need to go fast as you can since you are constantly on a timer, where the longer you player the harder it gets. However, Chris composed all the tracks to where the "full" song kicks in much later in. So it creates this dynamic where if you want to enjoy the ost in game you need to WORK for it, and push yourself to survive longer in levels. As for Coalescense, yes it does take place at the end of the game. The setting is the the ruins of the cargo ship you were originally a passenger of, as you fight your way to the bridge to escape. Honestly I went back to RoR1 not to long ago and I was shocked how past me made it to the final level to crash the game, whereas current me was struggling to get there lol.

I know its very unpopular but I feel RoR1 got better music over 2 mostly because the original soundtrack gives you a harder feeling of solitude in the unknow, hostile wilderness. This theme is the perfect example of such thing.
@girish9242
@girish9242 Жыл бұрын
It's not unpopular whatsoever, I see most people preferring the RoR1 soundtrack. But to me RoR2 just has such a bigger soundscape, more complex and beautiful tracks with more soul and artistry in them. It feels like Chris put his everything into RoR2, especially with tracks like Antarctic oscillation or the Raindrop that Fell to the Sky.

@Argom42

As a fan of both soundtracks, I do prefer ror1, it's more of a journey, a story being told of the survivor, his or her struggles, their choices, actions, the impacts of them. With the ror2 soundtrack it feels more atmospheric than episodic, I don't know how to describe it but the first soundtrack is a masterpiece of musical storytelling.

Risk of Rain is a hard game. And it's a roguelike. So you died a ton times. You finally defeated this huge open temple level. The music has been vibing and going nuts the whole time. You get to the stage titled 'Risk of Rain' and you're so amped. And then you get this masterful song that's calm but climbing in intensity, all while you are going NUTS fighting tons of enemies that were bosses previously now swarming you. It's a great song by itself but still one that experiencing in the game naturally amplifies it.

Glad you got to your first RoR1 song! Though still distinctly Chris' style and following some of the same beats throughout its OST, it does have its own identity and vibe. I always felt like I heard some Jan Hammer influences here, especially in the solos.

I like your thinking at around 11:00, however I'd like to add to it. Yes, this song plays right before the boss, so it is the final stage song you get to hear, and the 2nd to last song, which the 1st one is ofc the main boss' theme. To add on, I think your description of this song being like a hallucination isn't wrong at all, I didn't think of it like that at all, but when you add everything together, like the title of the song suggests, it makes it so, so much greater. If you know the story, what the characters experience in RoR; it's like a hallucination. They all suddenly get attacked, and escape to the nearby planet. Cargo drops down along with them, and they use the items to escape, and they escape using teleporters, but the teleporters are also risky along with everything trying to kill them. They go through so many things, different enemies, different landscapes. Finally when they reach the final teleporter, they get transported where it all started, their ship. Which you can note again, that it's everything coming back together as one. When you look back on everything, what they've gone through... it's unimaginable, like a hallucination. I never thought of that until now, and I really like that different perspective. However my perspective was also a bit different yet similar. I thought of this song like nostalgia. Again, reconsidering what the characters go through in this game, when they finally go back to where it all started, you can't help but wish that everything would end; that everything would return to normal; wanting to go back in the past. As the song progresses and increases in strength, especially in the end, I imagine that the characters are practically screaming to want everything to be normal again, however that cannot be, which brings dread, sadness, and again, nostalgia. It's the buildup of everything, then the combination of everything that makes it so special, especially to me. In so many ways does it do that insanely well. I just gave examples from above, but then obviously how the music is made that you explain so well. For some people, and for me, that's not the end. This song hurts to listen to ngl. I've made mistakes in the past, and a major one I deeply regret and cannot say enough, and this song makes me want to go back, fix everything I've done. However I can't. No matter how much I wish for that, which connects imo to the story of RoR. This song will always be with me. I'm sorry to the ones I've hurt, and this song will remind me of that. I am however very grateful for this beautiful song, so thank you Chris.
