Mmm a CRT won't harm you as long as you don't remove the rubber cap covering the high potential anode. The fly back dies on its own since the oscillator transistors won't be running anymore, meaning that once it's powered off the board is safe. It's still wise to discharge the tube before you go poking around in that area, or at least disconnect it in the case that the internal diode between the anode and the fly back has shorted or was never installed. Excellent way to start my week!
@AiOinc18 жыл бұрын
Average CRT anode voltage is probably nearer to 22kV than 27, but that's close enough. During operation, the fly back puts out high voltage but low current, usually so low that you won't even feel it. However, if you leave it in circuit with the CRT, the tube will act as a sort of capacitor and bring that current up to dangerous levels, even at low voltage. The general rule of thumb is to leave the damned thing alone, it's not as dangerous as people make them out to be, but they're dangerous enough that you really shouldn't mess with them without any prior instruction.
@AiOinc18 жыл бұрын
That boot time just shows you that no matter just how fast we clock our processors and no matter how many cores we add, the old equipment will always be better because it's simplicity leaves less to go wrong. They also don't compensate for the mentally disabled generations of today, but that's a different story.
@MattExzy8 жыл бұрын
I agree, I had to take a double look at that boot. I think System 6 was written in close to assembly. The problem is, today's OSs need to load a lot of libraries, and lots of high-level language stuff. That's why a browser a decade ago might've used 100MB, and the one I'm using now is eating 1GB. iTunes is gobbling on half a gig. But, I guess that's why we have SSDs :D
@8bitbubsy8 жыл бұрын
When teaching people this, you shouldn't rule out the possibility of high voltage capacitors being present and charged on a board after disconnecting the HV anode from the CRT. In this case though, the only high voltage caps (AFAIK) are the DC filter ones *inside* the PSU, so it's safe. Not all old boards have a bleeding resistor for the big caps.

I'd prefer working with an iMac G3 as the CRT is shielded from the "logic" board and other parts I'm interested in working with. Bare CRTs out of their enclosures scare me. Too bad I still don't have a classic monochrome Macintosh.
@AiOinc18 жыл бұрын
The only thing you have to worry about is cracking the glass or necking the tube, both of which usually just mean that it'll stop working at all and you have to buy a replacement. If you're removing cataracts from the screen, be extremely careful because the tube has a serious risk of implosion. So long as you don't leave the tube in circuit, the high voltage from the fly back won't hurt you at all, but if you leave the tube in circuit it acts as a capacitor, which will bring the 24kV at .2mA to 24kV at 2A which will really ruin your decade.

if you load up a 7.0 startup disk with the apple share extension you can load a shared disk image/folder from a newer internet connected mac over serial to install the os bypassing the floppy drive. allowing you to mass transfer data or even install larger mac os installs like 7.5.5.

For a healthy person the dangers of the flyback transformer in CRT-monitors is overrated. It's extremely high voltage, but there is barely any capacitance. Now I still won't recommend sticking your dirty fingers in the monitor, but if you are going to work on the machine, keep it unplugged for a few days, stick a crocodile clip between an isolated, flat screwdriver and something you are 100% sure is grounded, and then poke the screwdriver between the protective grommet using only one hand, making sure that you are in contact with the metal in the middle of the anode. This is much safer than just trying to avoid touching components of the CRT-monitor.

I"ve reached the point where I try to avoid taking any of my SE's apart if I don't have to. Anytime I do, it seems something else goes wrong. 30 year old cables, connectors, caps, etc. just don't don't like to be disturbed. Soon as I find a decent and affordable 8 or 9" screen, I'm throwing either my RPi or my old 2006 mini in a Classic Case and calling it a day. edit: And I'm through putting those stupid Torx screws back in. These old Macs hold together quite well without them. :)
